There are many Maria Magdalena in the Bible.
We also have Simon of Cyrene, Joseph of Arimathea, named after places, but you make a fair point, most of the other Marys are named in relation to their relatives, maybe it could have been to make the point that she came from Magdala (and making this point for a particular reason). I still think that if she had been a prostitute, it might have been specifically mentioned.It is rather interesting, IMO, that she is named according to her town, rather than her relation to a male relative like most of the other NT Marys.
