Was Maria Magdalena a prostitute?

There is nothing in scripture that says that. She got mixed up with the story of the woman about to get stoned, but the Gospel of John names Mary in other places. They’re not the same person.
 
Isn’t it wonderful how there is quite a conversation going about Mary Magdalene
 
Wasn’t Mary Magdeline the one whom 7 devils were cast out of?

If not explicitly stated in scripture, then it is in any case, a generally held belief look at back through the history of the church, I think.
 
Yes, Jesus cured her… but somehow, these prostitute stories got mixed up. There’s a difference though.
 
Yes, she had demons cast out of her.

I read online recently that Magdala was a place renowned for prostitution (I have no idea if that is true). But in the Gospel it mentions that Matthew was a tax-collector, but not that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. Would this not be something that would be mentioned if it was the case?

But, one way or the other, it doesn’t matter in the end. Mary Magdalene was a sinner (as we all are) but she repented and stuck by Christ right through His Passion right to the bitter end, when all but one of His Apostles had run away. She is a wonderful saint and a model for us all.

It is rather interesting, IMO, that she is named according to her town, rather than her relation to a male relative like most of the other NT Marys.
 
They probably didn’t know male relatives and just called her Mary of Magdala, because she was Mary from Magdala.
 
There is no evidence in scripture that she was of such background. Yet, the Tradition tells us otherwise. Therefore, it remains a debate. But we know happily now she is a beloved Saint!

Just an isolated tradition though. That’s where we can make mistakes. It isn’t the combined body of a council or bishops. Sometimes even the greatest of church fathers said peculiar things in isolation (for example, the popular teaching that the afterlife consisted of “demonic tollbooths” and demonic tax collectors who’d punish people before they got to heaven).
 
Yes, it is not high level teaching. You are quite correct.

We also have Simon of Cyrene, Joseph of Arimathea, named after places, but you make a fair point, most of the other Marys are named in relation to their relatives, maybe it could have been to make the point that she came from Magdala (and making this point for a particular reason). I still think that if she had been a prostitute, it might have been specifically mentioned.
 
Maybe she had lost anyone to care for her. Since she was possessed, she might’ve been discarded and was wandering around the Migdal/Galilee area. There was the other Gentile man (Legion) who had been discarded as well. After being healed, it seems she never left Christ’s side. So I’m jealous either way 😃
 
Yes, Mary Magdalene was a prostitute before who changed her ways after meeting Jesus. From malicious dresses, she changed it into simple ones. That casted out 7 demons out of her. She then follow Jesus and lived a holy life.
