I’ve heard somewhere her seven demons were the seven deadly sins. Was she possessed or mentally ill?
That’s an anachronism. Possession of multiple demons in the NT exhibited madness. Not sophistication.

Umm, I just mean that the seven deadly sins (by that particularly title) wasn’t explicitly taught until later. In the Scriptures however, demon possession, or possession of multiple demons at least, was like the story of ā€œLegionā€. He’s crazy:

They came to the other side of the sea, to the territory of the Gerasenes. When he got out of the boat, at once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him. The man had been dwelling among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain. In fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the hillsides he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones. Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and prostrated himself before him, crying out in a loud voice, ā€œWhat have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me!ā€ - Mark 5:1-7

I think she really did have 7 demons cast out, as the bible says.

I think it is a dangerous thing to rationalise incidents of demonic possession written about in scripture as mental illness.

What is that assumption based on? That demonic possession probably doesn’t exist and can be explained away by a normal material cause? That approach can lead to very dangerous assumptions.

What’s the difference between the two? Some cases of demonic possession were indeed mental illnesses. I was reading about exorcism in modern day world

Mental illness is caused by chemical, emotional or physical causes, etc. Demonic possession is caused by real demons from hell who hate Christ and His creation. I think it is a dangerous thing to write them off as if they don’t really exist.

Are you replying to me? Because I never said it was mental illness. It was still demonic.

But saying it’s the seven deadly sins is a bit more sophisticated than typical demon possession. It notes a degree of participation in civilization. The wily harlot, for example.

It also personalizes those sins as demons, when they’re on our own head. I hate this kind of thinking. ā€œSatan made me do itā€. Satan is a tempter and his name literally means ā€œaccuserā€ (like the accuser in Job). He wishes to drag humans down, which is his own sin. Our sins are our own.

Did the 1st Century Jews have a concept of 7 deadly sins?

Sins are different from demons. Sins are the choices we make that separate us from God. A demon is an entity from hell. They are different things.

It doesn’t seem that they did in any explicit way. I was replying to the later teaching that Mary’s demons were the seven deadly sins. It never sat well with me, because the scripture or context of other demonic possessions doesn’t seem to denote that. Secondly, Jesus cured her. I don’t think he cures people of ā€œsinā€. He calls us to repentance. But he cured her of an actual torment.

The archeologists have theorized that they may have been used for ritual washing, but there was no concrete evidence.
Respectfully thank you for your info failing to mention finding the Magdal Stone?

Opinion, easy to find what one is saying in many News sources and within Israel News report…

Info sources came from archaeologists reports, stating as an incredible find, the greatest in the last 50 years. Was found In Magdal, or Migdal Nunia also know as Dalmanutha within (Mark Gospel).

Stunning discovery led to further excavation of a 1st Century Synagogue, Magdala Stone found, having cravings of Seven Branch Manorah, Market Place, fish factory.

Plus a coin minted in Tiberias in 29 CE found along side the Synagogue, as evidence, this Synagogue was from 1st Century and references to Pontius Pilate and Magdal Stone, resembling the one in craved on the Arch depicting when they destroyed the Temple. Find a Synagogue with painted wall and mosaic seeing rows were people sat. Along with ritual baths. Jesus must of taught there, in this synagogue?

Matthew 4:23 " Then he went around throughout the whole of Galilee, in their synagogues and preaching the good news of the Kingdom"

Matthew 9:35 " Now Jesus was going around all the town and villages teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom and healing every kind of disease and sickness.

Luke 4:14-15 " Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee".
Where is Capernaum, Nazareth, Bethehem, Cana (wedding feast?) and he was known as The Nazarene?

Known as Mary Magdalene
…Magdalene means >one from Migdal-city Migdal Nunia, known also as Magdala.

Jesus ministry lasted 3 years and most was in and around Galilee, Jesus went down to Jerusalem Temple mentioned in NT about 2 or 3 time, only on yearly Holy Feast Days. those who were not not living in Jerusalem. Those living in surrounding areas such as Galilee and from other Nations of the Jewish Faith, being commanded by God, called to gather to the Jerusalem Temple.

Joseph Flavis Historical writings, Roman Historical writings, came from all over, million maybe? Galilee being a distance on foot to go weekly, had synagogues in Galilee seems to fit in what NT writings within Scriptures . Acts, Gospel and other Historically sources, there were Synagogues there in Galilee.

Home town also of Jewish Leader .Yosef be Maitityaha, known as the Roman Historian of Joseph Flavis who was Governor of Galilee, during the time of the Jewish revolt 66-73 CE) Huge Fishing Industry there at that time of Jesus.
St Peter his brother Andrew were fisherman.

Pondering interesting, what did happened to Mary Magalene after Jesus died and how long did she live for and where did she die?

Respectfully. Opinion only. Good question and believe not, if true?. Jews meaning of sin, is one who missed the mark. Those who lived in Sin/ai were called Sinners, for they came from SINai. If this is true according to Jewish words and meanings.Historically and Scholarly sources. Peace šŸ™‚

Respectfully opinion only. Thought the only sin that would never be forgiven was the one of the Holy Spirit? What was that sin of the Holy Spirit?

First have to know if it was Mary Magdalene to ask if she was possessed or mentally ill, right? Wrong woman?

Pope Gregory the Great Sept 14,1591 pronounced, that of Mary Magdalene as being the prostitute.

Will not find such in the Bible, Luke >names this woman having 7 demons>> as being>> unknown Pondering on, Luke would he not of known, if it was Mary Magdalene and many in Jesus time, within the community, disciples followers, oral traditions, stories pass down, because of her families great wealth and being well known and established as Nobles? Mary Magdalene came from a wealthy family of Nobles, being thought of as a prostitute, does not fit?

Pope Francis in 2016 decrees a Feast Day in Mary Magdalene honor to be July 22.

Only in 1969 did CC roll back centuries of labeling Mary Magdalene as such.

Will not find such in the Bible
There are many things we won’t find in the Bible that Christians believe, like how Joseph had children from a previous marriage, or how Mary took a vow of virginity. Just because such things aren’t explicitly mentioned in Scripture doesn’t mean they aren’t true.

What is the difference between her being demonic possessed versus mentally ill? If Jesus freed her from her illness. She was never described as mentally ill or crazy. As for her being a prostitute, is that because she’s an unmarried woman?

I’ve been to the excavations in magdala. T
Respectfully many Synagogues found around the outside areas smaller villages etc nearest to Magdala, 7 believe at this point, this synagogue is found in Magdala 2 miles outside of Galilee Fishing Habor.

Historical sources, Romans were known for their recordings

ā€œHerod Antipas was responsible for building the projects at Sepphois and Betharamphta and more important constructions of his Capital Tiberias on the western shore of the>> Sea of Galilee > later became >>>the City Center of Rabbic Learningā€™ā€ >> quoted from sources.

Galilee Area, with Magdala 2 mil from, along with Herod Antipas constructions of a > Capital City, being in the close area, within the Galilee Fishing Harbor, Fishing Industry, jobs jobs, not just those in the fishing industry. Many pockets of Jewish communities, synagogues would be found throughout.

When reading the Gospels one will find Jesus in those areas preaching and teaching, Damacaus? Cana? North of the Jerusalem City in the lower South.

Within the Gospels is it not written Jewish people along with Blessed Mother, Jesus was 12 yes old, traveled like a caravan down to Jerusalem? Was it 2 days when Blessed Mother could not find Jesus among the family went still in travel, etc Joseph and Blessed Mother, had to go back back to Jerusalem looking for him? Not a hop skip and a jump was it on foot?

All would know who Mary Magdalene, her family brother and sisters, would be? Because her parents were wealthy and well known Nobles, own massive possessions of lands, castles there in Magdala and surrounding area and in Jerusalem itself etc. Interesting.
Peace:)

I did not deny the importance of the migdal stone, nor of the importance of the synagogue. You had said that you had researched the subject a while back and I was simply stating that what some of what was reported as fact in the early stages of the excavation was found to simply been conjecture or has since been disproven. Yes, it is plausible and even probable that Jesus taught within the synagogue at Magdala.

I was actually arguing against your point.
