Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, prisoner in Communist Romania, friend of Archbishop Sheen, started the speculation that Karl Marx was not just an atheist but a Satanist. Any comments?
I’d say that was a common theory amongst persecuted Christians in communist countries. Pastor Richard Wurmbrand was to become well known in the West, but I doubt if he “started it”.
I remember my old protestant pastor,
who was a conservative to his boot laces, once commenting to me, “I sometimes wonder if Communism wasn’t God’s idea, but the devil got hold of it first. “From every man according to ability; to every man according to need”. It was given through a Jew, and it’s got an almost Biblical ring about it. But you’d never get the churches to accept it now!”
It surprised me to hear him say it, but I found he was usually right about most things, including prophetic predictions about some future events.
So what was at core meant to be an egalitarian sharing of resources turned into a brutal, mass murdering atheistic system under Stalin in particular, who then set the standard for Mao, Pol Pot etc.
Let’s put it this way - the idea of a society sharing it’s goods either came from God or the devil. I don’t think it came from the devil, but since he knew it was coming, he got his placemen into position first.
I could make a similar argument about the Reformation. God wanted His church cleaned up - badly. And the devil knew that too - but he managed to divide it and keep it divided.
It’s not God’s will that the church remain divided. That’s the will of men and the devil.
It’s not God’s will that the rich lead lives of staggering prosperity, while thousands die of starvation everyday. That’s the will of men and the devil.
I beg to differ with Richard Wurmbrand on this one.
