Was my baptism invalid? CDF says "We Baptize" Invalid

Hi Father,

I just wanted to keep updated those who might want to know, namely yourself, @(name removed by moderator), and @StudentMI:

I’m feeling much better. I had a phone meeting with my spiritual director today (who is a priest in another diocese), and he was wonderfully helpful and reassuring. Supportive of me potentially having a conditional baptism and confirmation, and calming about how to see my state in the meantime.

I just wanted to thank folks here for their prayers. I was starting to spiral out a little (that little doubt that got planted was growing in a disturbing way, and then the fear that I might never be able to cut it off), and I’m feeling so much better having spoken to my spiritual director and knowing there’s a way forward to peace of mind, and that this isn’t just a closed door.

(I should say, rather than a way forward to peace of mind, that even right now I can have peace of mind, knowing that we’re going to actually examine the evidence to assess the question of moral certainty.)

It’s NOT a vice. In fact, all the Saints say that we should pray for a happy death, and especially being able to receive the Sacraments before death.

Can a lay person administer conditional baptism in danger of death? I know that anyone can administer Baptism if they know an unbaptized person is in danger of death.

This sounds like any old person’s baptism could be in doubt. After all, I don’t know what the pastor who baptized me said, my parents are both dead, the pastor is certainly dead. Of course, I assume the man did the baptism correctly. But, of course, I can’t be absolutely sure. And everybody over a certain age can say the same thing. Should we ALL be conditionally baptized? That just doesn’t sound right.

I think a case can be made for conditionally baptizing most if not all converts. But I’m not in charge of the Vatican.
Well, I think we know which ones have the right rubric, if followed correctly. It’s when ministers start free styling that the problems occur.

I wonder - when we renew our baptismal vows - does that do anything if the baptism wasn’t valid? The whole thing is weird. You thought you were baptized yesterday, and today found out you weren’t.

I remember the day my wife and I found out that the Priest who married us was secretly married himself. Lots of questions, but ultimately not a problem for us.

I noticed in my EC church- for the baptism texts… we have it another way…
it’s " X is baptised in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"

X standing for the child’s baptismal name.

Obviously there’s no place for the “I” or “we” in this case.

So Vatican is fine with this form?

Funny, because in Eastern Catholicism there is neither “we” nor “I” - the Priest says “The servant of God [name] is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

And their baptisms are considered valid.
that’s just interesting. So the EC version is fine. it’s almost like a third person view- just saying the person’s name.

whereas the “I” and “we” are first person.
