Was my confession valid?

Hello-

I went to confession today. The church I was going to confession at, you had to make an appointment. So, I went. The Priest met me in the Library in flip flops, basketball shorts, and a t-shirt. He also was drinking a jumbo sized coffe saying “this is my Frickin coffee cup”…I feel that my confession was invalid. I don’t know what to think. I am laughing and concerned all at once. Please advice. Thanks you pals!! 😛
 
Did you confess with a contrite heart?
Did the priest absolve you?

If the answer is yes, your confession is valid.

What the priest wears, or drinks, is of no consequence, although it proboably would have caught me a little off-guard at first, too! 😉

Sounds like you were validly absolved by a man who doesn’t care much for his priesthood. :mad:

It is not the priest that absolves you… OIt is Jesus… So, yes, if you had a contrite heart and the priest absolved you, you are now in a state of grace!

You have a very interesting priest!

What makes you say this?

The priest was in casual dress, and drinking coffee. On a Thursday. That totally must make him a terrible priest.

There are numerous legitimate reasons why the priest might have been in those clothes and unwilling or unable to change. And why through no doing of his own the coffee might have been in that cup.

If you’re always 100% immacuately presented in every circumstance then I congratulate you, but must also warn you you’re a very rare creature.
 
I don’t know the context, but imagine you made a car accident and a priest making his jogging is passing in the same place and give you absolution before you died… I’m not sure that te question of validity of the absolution must be important.
The most important thing is the mercy of god that you received. I don’t think that te fact that the priest have all religious clothes could impact absolution.
But it’s also important to pay attention as priest about our acts.

Since you went to the extent of making an appointment, he probabally should made the effort to try and be alittle more professional. But priests are people too. They can’t live in the priest clothes all the time, and spend their time off praying. But yes so long as you confessed with the purest intentions, Jesus I’m sure validily absolved you, not the dude in the basketball get-up. 😃
 
The ordained Priest does the absolution not the clothing he wears.

I wonder if the original poster would question if a confession was valid if he was in a war zone and the Priest was wearing BDUs while hearing his confession?

For all we know, it could have been his day off even (or a day off). The OP has not mentioned the time, but I’m assuming because of the coffee that it was probably early (priests are human too, and just like many people they require their jumbo coffee in the morning).
 
Hi!

I was not starting a fight. Its not what I grew up with. BTW this is what the priest wore under his robe after mass. I just grew up differently. When I grew up, if the priest was working he was always in his black outfit. I know they have lives outside of their job. I am just use to seeing priest when the work in the office, which he was that day after mass, they are in their usual gear. This priest for instance said he like to play video games for a hobby. I guess It is my fault since I have them on this pedestal. Sorry please don’t argue.

I agree with you. The priest wasn’t in a war zone, he wasn’t just “jogging by”, the OP made an appointment so the priest knew the OP was coming. There was no reason for the priest to be dressed like this and no reason for him to be drinking a “Fricking” cup of coffee. I work in a law office and I can tell you that if lawyers went to court wearing regular street clothes instead of a suit, the judge would throw them out of court. This priest was there in persona Christi to absolve sins, which is the greatest calling on this earth. As one priest told me, they are literally pulling people out of hell. This priest showed no respect for the great office he holds and no respect for the person who confession he was there to hear.

But all that aside, as long as he said the correct words of absolution, the OP’s sins were absolved.

Thank you friend. I did not make judgement. I just never went to confession like this. I was just shocked. I also can’t stop laughing… Thats why. anyways, God knows my intention… He was young like 40 ish.

I’ve worked in numerous law offices. What a lawyer (or a judge for that matter) wears to court or a meeting when they’ve had many weeks’ advance notice of the date and no disruptions on the day to get them off track or off schedule is one thing.

What they might be wearing, say, at an emergency hearing taking place on a Sunday night, or what they might wear in the privacy of their offices when no meetings or hearings are scheduled and someone drops by with all of five minutes’ notice, can be quite different.

Lawyers are by no means ‘on show’ all the time, nor judges, nor should priests have to be either.🤷

And before you start saying ‘oh but a lawyer would always be prepared at a moment’s notice’ - at least one of the firms I’ve worked at had stated as written policy, that staff who had no meetings or court attendances scheduled on a particular day could dress casually. And it happened fairly often in practice too.

I was specifically talking about lawyers going to court and appearing before a judge. I was not talking about office attire. No lawyer would ever appear in court without dressing appropriately. You should know that if you have worked in law offices. Most lawyers that I know will always keep a suit in their office for appearing in court or if a client comes into the office.

A Catholic priest has a much more important vocation than any lawyer. The priest is appearing before the great God in heaven. The priest is representing Jesus Christ and he should dress appropriately. Again, the OP had made an appointment. This wasn’t a surprise in the middle of the night. There was absolutely no reason why the priest should be carrying a “fricking” cup of coffee with him either. His behavior was totally inappropriate. I find his behavior inexcusable and completely disrepectful to the office of the priesthood.
