What does scripture or tradition say on his geneology ?
If you’re talking about the apostle St. Peter, nope, he’s not a Levite as far as we can tell. He doesn’t even have a genealogy in the Gospels (then again, no disciple has any record of their genealogy)! The few things we know about Peter’s pedigree and prior life, which we can glean from the New Testament, are:
  • His name was originally Simon (sometimes recorded as Symeon)
  • His father’s name is Jonah or John (cf. his patronymic Barjona, or in Aramaic, bar-Yonah in Matthew 16:17 and the o yios Iōannou of John 1:42)
  • He has a brother named Andrew
  • Both brothers were fishermen by trade and apparently lived in Capernaum at the time, though John (1:44) seems to indicate their hometown/birthplace as Bethsaida
  • He has/had a wife, as indicated by the presence of a mother-in-law

Matthew 16
13] Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare’a Philip’pi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?”
14] And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli’jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15] He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16] Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Yet Peter had been trained all his life that only the high priest could utter the name of God in the Holy of Holies once a year. I think more was revealed to Peter than what was recorded. Peter could have been a Levite but I’ve never seen any evidence yet.

If Peter were a Levite, and the other Apostles representatives of the other 11 tribes … this would have clear implications marking the Church as the NEW Priesthood.

I don’t think we could ever conclude that all 12 tribes were represented … given several apostles being brothers. So, the next best ‘fit’ would be at least having Peter as a Levite … or from Tribe of Judah, which gave us David, and Christ.

Hang on, if only the High Priest could utter the name Peter uttered then it wouldn’t mean Peter was a Levite at all, since even THEY couldn’t utter it - it could only mean Peter was High Priest!

As for the name - surely Peter used one of the many alternatives, that scripture is full of, instead of the actual Sacred Name that was only uttered once a year.
