Was softcore porn in this instance OK? And was looking at actual full porn OK if I didn't mean to?

I used to look at softcore porn because I thought it was OK as long I didn’t look at any full porn. I don’t think like that anymore.
  1. I will say this at confession at some point, but do I have to go to Reconciliation before I receive Holy Communion?
  2. Also, when I looked at full porn (which was the only thing that I considered grave) on accident, was that a mortal sin?

I am not an expert, but keep in mind, that porn of any kind is like a drug, a little leads to a lot. and can take you down roads you don’t want to go on. Depending on the reason for viewing, I believe it is a sin.

Mortal sin:
  1. Grave matter
  2. Full knowledge of gravity
  3. Full consent of the will
When in doubt, go to confession and ask the priest. Unless, by softcore porn you meant a CPR manual :D.

By OK I meant not a sin, and I don’t believe this anymore. I’m asking do I have to confess this before I receive the Eucharist because at the time I did not believe it was a mortal sin.

Whenever someone asks whether something is a mortal sin, it seems they’re looking for an excuse not to go to confession. Why? Just go and you’ll be better for it, even if it wasn’t mortal. It’s a good pious habit to go frequently to receive advice on moral matters. Even saints went to confession to confess their imperfections. It’s no different than brushing your teeth at regular intervals.

Hello again. As for #1, if it’s making you ask, I think you should just get yourself over to confession on Saturday, and get it off your chest. I’m not sure what the difference is between softcore and hardcore, but talk to the priest.

#2, you say you did it by accident. Did you just run across it, say a mental “whoops” and get rid of it, or did you linger around after the whoops?

Why don’t you just go to confession and take care of it either way? It’s a lot easier than worrying about it.

I’m just asking that if I don’t go to Confession this Saturday, would it be a mortal sin to receive Holy Communion?

Please clue me in: What is “softcore porn” as opposed to “full (or, I guess, hardcore) porn”?

Would your mother approve of you viewing this “softcore porn”?

CCC definition of pornography:
2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials.
By this definition, nudity wouldn’t count (I guess they didn’t want to repaint the Sistine Chapel 😃 )

I don’t know the difference between “soft” and “hard-core” porn. In my mind, porn is porn, and in the Church’s mind, porn is real or simulated sex acts.

Perhaps “soft core” could be termed “provocative nudity?”

Softcore is not actual sex, just having breasts exposed.

I’m not trying to sound like a pervert, sorry.

Okay… I guess… millions of infants can’t be sinning perverts…

Intent is key to the question. WHY were you peering at the ladies’ boobs?

For sexual excitement? You’re probably guilty, pal!

If there’s genuinely a different reason than sexual excitement, then the jury is still out… but I’d kind of like to hear the reason… http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/ponyguy/Shrug.gif

I do think it was sinful now, but I didn’t back when I looked at it. Was this still a mortal sin?

Quit being so scrupulous!

If you sincerely didn’t consider it wrong at the time you did it, then it wasn’t.

Only “The Big Guy” and you know if you were really sincere.

Sins can’t be committed retroactively… that’s simply absurd…

On a related note, I wonder how to heck to avoid this stuff in our society today.

That sounds like a joke, but it’s not. The darned stuff is everywhere. It’s so pervasive, I’d bet a lot of us don’t recognize it.

For example, you’ll get a dose of it nearly every time you’re in the grocery store check out line, as some “woman’s magazine” will have some indecent tart exposed on the cover. If it isn’t pornography, it’s darned close, and the articles advertised on nearly every issue about how to seduce someone certainly must be. Every year Sports Illustrated comes out with its annual pornography issue. How many young Catholic men view that, and don’t realize that it really is pretty bad. It’s not Playboy, but Playboy is the next thing.

Billboards in bigger cities often have indecency on them. Television of all types certain has stuff that is, or borders, pornography. But even odd images everywhere, now days, often include it. Yesterday I pulled into a commercial parking lot with my wife and nine year old daughter, only to realize that the truck parked next to me featured a sticker of a topless Betty Boop. I suppose that’s supposed to be cute or something, but it’s basically pornographic.

The visual moral sewer we live in is really problematic for people who struggle with this, I’m quite sure.

Clarification: sin is sin whether one realizes it. Sin is an action which separates us from God, and it does this whether we know it does it. Now, sin can especially separate us from God if it is mortal sin, and committing mortal sin requires full knowledge, including knowledge that the act is a sin.

Would you have looked at either of them if Jesus was sitting beside you? If not, then more than likely what you looked at was sinful.

I do not agree, and I argue that your statement directly contradicts the definition of sin…

Your statement directly counters the statement that to be sinful, the potential sinner must be conscious that the action (or transgression) being considered must be wrong and sinful.
Mortal sin:
  1. Grave matter
  2. Full knowledge of gravity
  3. Full consent of the will
If I do something that I sincerely think is not sinful, then it’s not a sin. “Sincerely” is the key word here; only the potential sinner and God Almighty know what lies in the person’s mind and heart.

Guilty of what? Mortal sin or venial sin?

Sure, it’s problematic. People need to learn to avert their eyes. To realize they are probably going to see something inappropriate. Back when Rome was still pagan, I’ll bet a lot of Christians heard or saw inappropriate things and knew that immoral behavior was going on.

One way to avoid the visual sewer is going to the supermarket and skipping the magazines, or politely complaining about some of them. I’m tired of scantily or provocatively “dressed” young ladies on various magazine covers.

Contact www.fcc.gov next time you see something objectionable on TV. Just be accurate and polite.

Peace,
Ed

Does that mean we can stop Playboy from having nudity in its new show with the FCC?
