Oh, thank you for explaining, You weren’t joking; you were actively jabbing because you think that Catholics jab you, so that you could accuse us of dishing out nastiness but not taking it. That makes your agenda quite clear.😃

To be fair, we don’t do drive-by insults. We tend to back our clims with theology and/or philosophy. You tend to make statements and disappear when you are asked to provided reasonable arguments.

English Protestants have been writing books claiming that St. Patrick was a Protestant since the 18th century. This is nothing more than an old rusty Protestant polemic being dug up yet again. Too bad Catholics aren’t more aware of their own past, especially English speaking Catholics. These ridiculous claims have been exploded competently and completely by Catholic authors hundreds of years ago. But as long as Catholics keep forgetting, Protestants will keep trying. 🤷

WHoa, calm down. No use reacting that vehemently. It wont do anyone any good.

Not even during ordinary time?šŸ™‚
Did they have ā€œOrdinary timeā€ back then? I thought it would just be the ā€œX Sunday after Pentecostā€? But then that isn’t right either, because that is the Tridentine Mass, and St Paddy was WAY before that too! 🤷😃

Take what? I don’t even understand. If it was meant as a joke, I laughed as much as the next man.

If it was meant as an insult, I offer you a hint: insults are often more effective at insulting when they make some sense.

Saying that St. Patrick was a baptist and that Esau was a Catholic makes no sense. It has to make sense to be insulting.

Traditionally, Orange represents the Protestants in Ireland, and Green the Catholic. Take a look at the Irish flag.

Ah, if I was uncharitable I apologize. We can all use friendly laughter and jokes --as St. Theresa of Avila said, ā€œFrom sour-faced saints, good Lord deliver us!ā€

And another wise person (I forget who–perhaps Cardinal Newman?) once said, ā€œIt is wise to treat one’s enemies as though they will one day be one’s friendsā€ (or something like that). Makes sense. God bless.

Yeah I know, But when you know he is from a town that doesnt like Syracuse (The Orangemen) it sure does make a lot more sense.

See, now THAT I did not know… Makes me understand a bit better why people went to raise arms over that comment…

Also. wasn’t St. Philip Niri (sp?) well-known (and loved) for his sense of humor?

Wasn’t he prior to the Great Schism? According to EWTN he was, and born in Scotland (yayyyy!!!)

Gotcha. I know the Irish were influenced by Eastern monasticism, and that it was Irish missionaries that contributed to the way the sacrament of penance is celebrated.

Part of where this arises is the fact that the Irish Church, because of their geographical location was cut off from much of what was going on in Europe. Different monastic orders had customs that would have been alien to orders in mainland Europe. They were also great scribes and copied many manuscripts.
I beleive this physical ā€˜separation’ from the Church in Rome gave rise to the Protestant notion that St. Patrick was not Catholic.

Ah yes, reasonable arguments! This is an apologetics board, and a Catholic one at that, the last time I checked. Seems theoldtimer has some difficulty providing reasonable arguments for his position judging by his hit and run tactics on this and other threads.

Yes, actually St Patrick was a Baptist
