Sometimes it’s important to remember that people DO write about religion for the public arena, and the RCC is in the position of being in the public. They/you are fair game in terms of accountability, especially when it comes to issues such as race relations, gender issues, and of course moral and sexual behavior. If a writer names concerns, he or she has a right to do that publicly. It doesn’t mean that they are always anti-Catholic or even anti-religious. It usually means they see something that is disturbing.
I believe in free speech, and people should be allowed to communicate their feelings, backed up by information they may add, or reinterpret information that is common knowledge. Of course she is allowed to present her views not as a letter to the editor, as I might, but frequently as an “expert” though in the articles I have seen she has no more new, objective data, no more demonstrated expertise to report than I would.

The problem is that most of the media is hammering the Catholic Church, over and over and over. If someone dies of food poisoning more than 50 miles away at a picnic, it won’t make our daily newspaper. If someone dies of food poisoning at a Catholic Church picnic, it will be reported even if it is 3000 miles away. A self righteous columnist will moan about this is what happens when the Catholic Church controls nutrition. And an editorial will bring up the priest sex scandal.

So I am not criticizing this individual writer, I am criticizing the media empires. Big Business formerly was Republican, and neutral on religion. Today Big Business is Democratic, and pro secular.
