So you only care when it affects you? You state that these “civil rights” should be above the “religious beliefs of some” Last time I checked, religious freedom is part of the first amendment. If only “some” people are religious then why…in a state so liberal as CA would the people vote for traditional marriage? A referendum seems more appropriate because everyone gets a say in the matter. And despite popular belief, how all people behave affects society. If it’s up to the liberal judges, it’s just up to their opinions. If we’re going on opinions then I want everyone’s. How gay marriage is a civil right…I don’t understand. The ACLU in an interview I saw is now working on protecting pedophilia as a “sexual orientation”. It’s been said, that people involved in gay “marriage” aren’t hurting anyone…they’re just doing what they like in the privacy of their homes. We can’t just think people should do whatever they want in the privacy of their own homes…as if it truly doesn’t affect others. If an alcoholic drinks his life away his personal choices are very likely to affect others. Like in my case, my father abused me…he also drove drunk multiple times which could have killed him, me, or anyone on the road those days. It also increases other’s insurance premiums due to all of the chronic illnesses alcoholism creates. Moral relativity is the new religion…for some reason, that is the only religion that is respected by the left…the rest of us are “ignorant or intolerant” OK…That’s me, you’re just a “free thinker” WOW maybe one day I’ll learn to read…leave the cult I belong to and then think like a liberal…then I’ll be accepted. They don’t want equality, they want special privileges to change definitions of words…they want to say that you don’t need a father AND a mother…two “nice” people can do it just as well…after all, divorce is 50% right? Sounds like I’m “coming around”…must be due to the accurate media helping me to think correctly! If the judges ruled in favor of Prop 8 I would accept their ruling…it doesn’t effect me either way…I don’t live in CA…nor do I live in WA…however this is an issue of constitutional interpretation and precedence…so I am in favor of the ruling as I do not believe gay men and lesbian women should be denied their civil rights due to religious beliefs of some.
I too have gay friends who see no need for marriage for their relationships…they have “formalized” their relationships thru their respective religious communities and celebrate their marriage with their friends. I have attended weddings of a dear lesbian couple held at MCC…I have been present and witnessed the marriage after the manner of Friends, and signed their marriage certificate of two men I am acquainted with…along with the rest of those present at Meeting. I have been the “best man” for one lesbian friend at UCC…they have filed for domestic partnerships all…and would like to have the rights and benefits on a federal level…but until that is granted see no reason to pursue marriage in a state they do not reside in which would offer them no benefits…they celebrated their marriage already.
However I find them in the minority among gay people…who do not wish “separate but equal”…but “equality under the law”…as was discussed, while state to state has different laws governing same sex partnership/marriage, there still are restrictions on the federal level which they wish to rectify.
