Today, I watched American Beaty movie. It’s had a short nude scene. It is a sin that I saw it.

Thank You.

I saw that movie years ago…if I remember correctly, the whole premise of the movie is rather yucky. Very self centered parents…who obviously don’t care who they hurt, as long as their needs are met.
Others might not agree, but if it is on your conscience and/or is causing impure thoughts or things such as that, tell it to your confessor. I guess I am more of the school of thought that I’d rather confess something that wasn’t necessary, than not.
But in general, seeing rated R movies, is not necessarily a sin…pornography yes. However, these days the lines very easily get crossed, even on regular tv. So, I would go with what your conscience is telling you, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to not watch it or the like again.
For example, those movies like American Pie and such, I personally, feel disgusted now to watch that. That is me. Is it a sin? For me, there are other more edyfing movies or things I could be doing…
I don’t know if my comments helped or made your confusion worse, I hope it is not the latter.
Take care and God Bless and good for you for even addressing such an issue…

Today I took a shower. I was nude. It’s a sin.

You’re welcome.

No, it isn’t a sin if you didn’t plan on watching something vulgar.

Now if you planned on seeing something vulgar and leading to sin then yes.

An accident is not a sin. But we do have the responsibility to not put ourselves in occasions of sin. I do not go to R rated movies for that very reason.

You know deep down inside if you planned on seeing this or not. Frequent confession is good for keeping ourselves in check and maintaining a healthy concience. In confession the Priest could give you better advice than most of us can on this forum. If you think it could be a sin, go see a Priest and don’t watch that movie again. 🙂

God Bless

That’s wrong. Its NOT a sin watching a nude scene in a movie.

What would be a sin would be if you knew in advance about the scene, went to see the movie specifically to watch that scene with the intention of getting sexually aroused and dwelling on the impure thoughts arising from that.

Even if it was an accident and you did not know there was a nude scene coming up, you can decide to indulge in the images after they are on the screen. I try to look away or just hit the chapter skip button on the DVD remote. But let’s say there is a 20 second nude scene in a movie that I didn’t know was about to happen. If it comes on the screen and I lustfully watch all 20 seconds of it, would you all agree that that is sinful. Not knowing that a nude scene is in a movie is not a free pass for you to indulge in it when it comes up on the screen. We have to do our best not to look at images in a lustful way, nude scene or not.

I am no expert on these matters. Do you all agree with me?

It is also good to check out the content ratings for movies before you watch them. When you look at a movie on imdb.com, they have a great section where people can post what kind of nude scenes are in movies, how extensive they are, etc. I believe it is titled “content advisory for parents” or something like that.

I don’t think it was a sin that you saw it if you weren’t expecting it and as long as you did not focus on it and lust over it. It might have been a venial sin but I don’t really know. But don’t worry, if you did commit a sin, you only committed a mortal sin because you did not have full knowledge as is evidenced by your asking this question here. 👍

Next time you want to watch a movie, check out a good Catholic movie reviews site such as the following first:

usccb.org/movies/

americancatholic.org/movies/default.asp

decentfilms.com/

I agree with Holly, that it probably wasn’t a sin if you weren’t expecting it. Hopefully you didn’t watch any of it and immediately skipped past it. You should be very careful of what you watch. Movies (especially if we watch movies quite often) have a definite effect on the culture and the individual person.

I must say that I do not like the USCCB or Decent Films reviews (I am not familiar with the other). They often fail to include moral problems with movies and they are, in my opinion, very loose with their opinions on age appropriateness for movies. That has just been my experience, though.

If it is a decent movie and it still has a nude scene in it and you knew about it…tough cookies. Just get over it and move on with your life instead of dwelling on the past. If you are a really paranoid person, you mind as well press fast forward when the nude scene starts.

I was in a garbage can for a minute and I got some pretty stinky
garbage on me. Do I smell? Is it wrong for me to be in a
garbage can?

:hmmm:

I agree. They gave very favorable reviews to Brokeback mountain and other extremely objectionable movies. The reviews characterize the artistic merits and entirely ignore the moral side. I could get better moral guidance from my local newspaper reivews. They really need to get a new person to do their review.

Has anyone noticed that this post–by a poster with only 2 posts, does not ask a question or invite a response? It is more of a declaration of opinion or a confession. I don’t see any of the responses (including this one) as beneficial in any way.

What do the scriptures tells you?? If your eye offends you…pluck it out! (OK, OK…just kidding) LOL!

On second thought, disregard my advice…if you watch another movie, and see a nude scene…just turn to another channel…it should be less painful! LOL!

Given the current discussion - I’d like to attain an answer as to whether you guys believe it is a sin for someone to go and see an action movie for its pure action content. Therefore the individual knows the movie will be based around action where the majority of it consists of killing, guns, explosions etc. And obviously the individual goes to see this action movie because the action satisfy’s him\her and offers enjoyment.

I don’t think so. I love action movies, and I also know, when the director yells cut, everyone gets up and eats lunch.

What bothers me is once and a while on the news, they will show a shooting on a police cruiser camera, with the person who got shot usually off camera. Knowing that is real bothers me a LOT. Not even in the same league as an action movie, in my opinion.

I instinctively close my eyes if I see nudity in a film or even a girl with a low cut top on or something. Probably best if you can get yourself to do that, though depends on why you’re watching the film and whether it is a tiny insignificant part of an otherwise respectable film or whether it’s an integral part
