So awhile back in mass I saw a person drinking water in the pew in front of me, I didnt say anything because I thought to my self what if the individual has a medical condition or something. Again today at mass I saw a women with a water bottle I dont know If she drank any before recieving the host. My question is are you allowed to drink water during mass?
 
There is no rule against drinking water during Mass. And no, water does not violate the fast before Communion.

Canon 919:
“One who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain from any food or drink, with the exception only of water and medicine, for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion.”

Yes you can and the priest also allows me to eat snacks and to drink juice and regular soft drinks because I am a type1 diabetic and sometimes my blood sugar goes low.

One of my pastors was aware that I had a medical need for it, so I used to have a bottle of water with me and would use it if I needed it.

I have asthma, and sometimes I would need to take a drink during Mass to help calm a dry cough due to my asthma.
 
Yes, water Is allowed during Mass as well as being consumed prior to reception of Communion.
 
If there were anything wrong with it Churches would not have water coolers :)🙂

I have known of priests who keep a glass of water by their chair; especially after preaching, their mouths are dry and have much more to go…
 
Our priest had the acolyte bring him a glass of water during the Eucharistic prayer on Sunday. Nothing wrong with taking a drink of water if necessary during Mass.
 
Being on 18 meds, 3 inhalers and oxygen, I need my water!

Yes, one of our priests has a glass of water actually on the altar, hidden behind a candle.

FIRST: water does NOT break “the hour-FAST”

Secondly: MANY have physical conditions that are lessened by drinking water, so there is no harm, no sin in doing so

This is NOT an abuse, when done for physical conditions:thumbsup:

She might have Sjögren’s syndrome.
 
Water is good. Our parish does request no sugary liquids - spills are hard to clean up after! Our pews are tattered enough as it is!
 
My mom always has a bottle of water with her when she is the cantor at Mass.
 
I’ve heard of an alleged “5-minute” rule that allows one to drink water up to five minutes before receiving Holy Communion, but I have no idea if that was a joke or not.
 
I have a small water bottle bc I sing at Mass. We also live in the desert so lots of people in my area bring it.

I would vote for joke. If one had a problem with dry mouth, I would think the more reverent thing to do would be to have a small sip of water just before receiving Communion to ensure proper swallowing.

Well, most likely you’ve not had a health issue where you’ve needed to at this point in your life. Not all conditions are obvious, so concentrate on the Mass and not on the others around you and it will be fine.
