It’s a different platform. Now it’s discourse and it was something else before.

You are making it sound like it’s some kind of money-making site, which it obviously isnt.

Considering the cost of hosting fees and of the paid staff they still have, I’m guessing it’s more about covering costs.
So how did they cover them for so many years without the ads and patron accounts?

I don’t understand. It looks pretty much the same as what it was nearly a decade ago when I joined.

Were they getting donations from generous people or something, and now that’s dried up?
Back in 2017, when everything changed to Discourse, I believe it was said that revenue and donations had decreased. As a result, they fired their moderation team and switched platforms.

Yes, pretty old school looking and very busy. I don’t like all the grey, I like the new better.

Um, where have you been?
Away for a while.

Other than a different format, I don’t see what is different. Forum topics seem pretty much the same. I don’t understand what people mean by moving to ‘discourse’.

I have donated monthly to CA for several years.I suspect there are or were a lot of these members doing the same. I recently had a block on my payment method due to hacking so I haven’tdonated for a few months . Not sure if I want to be a patron. I’ve experienced numerous fals recently for seemingly minor comments. Much different here than it was a while back

Discourse is the new forum platform. The old design was antiquated and difficult to manage anymore.

They deleted some sections like the Water Cooler

The biggest change was closing the Ask an Apologist category. In my opinion, that ruined everything.

Here’s something I don’t understand. CAF is by far the largest and most active English speaking Catholic forum in the world (maybe even the universe), and there are like 2 deacons and 2 priests who occasionally post here. I wonder how many people read this forum each day. It’s got to have a lot of traffic. And here we are, all alone without a shepherd 😭. I think these clerics could grow a thicker skin by playing in the pigpen with us. It would be beneficial (and fun) for them. What do you think.

Well, at one time there were many religious here. I can’t speak for all of them but from what I’ve seen most leave due to the rudeness and misbehavior that is rampant here. There also appears to be a general lack of support for them here, both from general users and administration.

Right. I suppose that’s a question for all of them to consider. Do they want to login and risk their peace. Or do they stay away from what is potentially aggravating, and possibly something they see as being bad for their own spirit.

It would have made sense for more clerics to post here during lockdowns and social distancing. But maybe I’m wrong about that.

One recently stepped back as they already have enough responsibilities and don’t require the insults and aggravation. Most of them are here seriously trying to help and they get NOTHING FOR IT.

But they don’t have to. They have other responsibilities near them. Catholic Answers has not shown any interest in recruiting or retaining clergy for the Forum.

I think it would benefical if an admistrator or a moderator of CAF would come to answers some of the questions of this threat. Such as thoses on money.

Communication on CAF has never been great. It’s been an ongoing problem.

Honestly, a donation FAQ section and YouTube video would help dispel any rumors or concerns.
