Now, that’s just cold!! 😃

Actually, the reason is Protestants tend to be math challenged. That why we reduced the number of books in the Bible. 😛 😛

Sorry for the jab, couldn’t help it…Actually I heard that from an Evangelical Christian comedian. I think his name was Mark Wernke? Funny guy, loved his story about his life and conversion.

Why does it matter which Church you associate with if you are totally devoted to God?

Let me elaborate:

The principium contradictionis or Principle of Contradiction -(P ^ -P) is a theory of Logic proposed by Aristotle in his Metaphysics.

In simpler terms:
If A is not B
than A can be or not be partially B at the same time.
But A cannot equal B at the same time.

(Not completely correct, but best way I can explain it in layman terms) Basically a Basketball can be partially like a Baseball because both are round and are used for Sport, however a Basketball cannot be a Baseball at the same time because fundamentally they are mutually exclusive.

Aquinas being a better Aristotle than Aristotle  decided to apply this theory to defense of the Catholic Church that is other religions can have portions of the truth, however since only one institution can contain all the truth than only one Church could be completely right. Being a Dominican Friar it’s pretty easy to assume which Church he saw as the Church 👍

However the theory makes sense, if the Catholic Church was at one time the only Church, then some Churches derived from Catholicism can contain partial truths. However because the Catholic Church cannot equal the Lutheran Church (for example) at the same time, it’s logically impossible that two mutually exclusive things can be exactly the same. And because there is only one solution for every equation (The true Church is = ?) that is why the Church you associate with is a big deal.

You make the assumption that there is a true church.

If someone is completely devoted to God and follows God’s commandments I don’t think God will punish this someone for belonging to a particular church. If you do, that’s fine, that’s your view.

God =/= Church
Maybe, but its funny.
🙂

Just out of curiosity then in this model thats based on Aristotle’s can then all religions be partially right and all religions be wrong and non holding the entire truth?

How do you know God?..
Do you mean what religion I am? I would describe myself as catholic though you would not.

By the way, when I said there may not be one true church, I meant that any church is sufficient in order to be devoted to God, not that there is no church capable of this.

No, I meant how do you know who God is?..I wouldn’t describe you as anything because I don’t know you. If you say you are Catholic that is fine with me.

I used to think that way as well. Considering that all Christian denominations were somewhat equal. But while undertaking a study of the history of the Christian faith, and after the Protestants had been unable to satisfactorily answer several very important questions I had I soon became convinced that the Catholic Church is historically, and spiritually the one true Church that Jesus established here on earth.
Does that mean all Protestants go to hell? No, does that mean all Catholics go to heaven? No again, but what it does mean is that there is a Church on earth that was established by Christ.2000 years ago. It is undivided, and unconquered to this day. That’s the Church you want to belong to if you want to know God, and his will.

I don’t like the extra-scriptual views the Catholic church has ie the infallibility of the Pope. Even the neccessity of the Pope.

I know what you mean. I don’t like the fact that the Church will grant annulments so folks who are divorced so they can receive the sacraments…Jesus was very specific in Mathew condemning divorce, and re-marriage…But…The Church has the authority to do it . “Whatsoever you bind on earth is bound in heaven. Whatsoever you loose on earth is loosed in heaven.” The Church has the authority to interpret scripture, not the other way around. Scripture is not superior to the Church. That’s a hard thing for Protestants to grasp when they have been taught to go by the word of God alone.
However, The idea of a Pope or the primacy of the Pope IS scriptural. A guy at work was giving me a hard time about how Jesus didn’t really put St Peter in charge of his Church. I told him; “What if the Boss called you into the office and with the entire board of directors present said to you “Joe, I’m giving you the keys to the corporation. Whatsoever you say or do goes here, and at the main office as well.” When you walked out of that room wouldn’t you think you were the Boss?”
Because there have been a few Popes in the distant past who abused their authority doesn’t mean that that authority ceases to be valid. By far the vast majority of the Popes have been God’s faithful servants. Jesus didn’t say his Church would be perfect. He said the gates of Hell would not prevail against, or conquer it. The Protestant Churches by contrast are hopelessly divided. Like an amebas they split, and then split again and again. The Churches of the so-called reformation are lost without the Sacraments and the Leadership that Jesus appointed.

Does the appointment of Peter necessitate more Popes though?
Of course. It wouldn’t make much sense if it didn’t…Why did the apostles elect another disciple after Judas committed suicide? Why did St Paul lay hands on and anoint Titus? The next generation needed leaders too. Jesus did not intend to leave his Church leaderless in any generation. Protestants will tell you that there was no one leader in the early Church primarily because they all thought that Christ was returning real soon. We know that wasn’t true otherwise why would St Paul anoint Titus, and Timothy making them priests?.

Ok if I accept that, what is to convince me that the current church leaders have more authority over interpretation of scripture than any other christian?

Thanks

Depends on how they follow the continuity of Teachings that are considered the Deposit of faith.

We Catholics can trace our leadership back to St Peter 2000 thousand years ago.

My responses may be frustrating, but I don’t see why such tracing back to St Peter gives someone more authority to interpret scripture. Are catholics blessed by God to understand scripture better because they can trace their church back to St Peter?
