You can take the dog with you, use a reputable kennel, have a dog sitter come in, or depend on friends or family.

Personally, we don’t take vacations because accommodating our dog would just be too difficult. He is raw fed and we do not vaccinate so that leaves out kennels. There are no friends or family who could do it. He doesn’t get along well with strangers so a pet sitter is out.

It all depends on the personality of the dog and the resources available to you.

As for your choices of breeds, why? Have you researched them thoroughly or is more of an aesthetic appeal? My hubby and I have a Bouvier that we got because my hubby just HAD to have one. We completely regret it. Bouviers have very specific temperments/needs that we just can’t completely meet. So it is really not fair to Bear but we make the best of it. Any future 4 legged additions to our family will be much more thought out:o

Very wise advice. It has been my experience in showing dogs for forty years and from volunteering 20 hours a week in a shelter that people often get a breed of dog for all the wrong reasons. Some dogs are better family dogs than others. One needs to familiarize themselves with the purpose for which the dog was designed. A herding dog does not do well in an apartment or in a yard without a fence. There are many other things to take into consideration. That is just one.

Great! I just love all animals! Even considered my conformation name to be after St. Francis!

We have a dog (lab-and who knows what mix) named Milo, a tabby & white cat named Otis, a black cat that we rescued from our office parking lot named Park (his full name is Parking Lot, DH named him), and another black and white cat that I rescued named Walt (after Walter Elias Disney, DH named him too, loves DisneyWorld!)

By the way Otis’s full name is Otis Potis:D 😛

We have a (B)Rat Terror (Terrier) named of all things Precious MARY. She stays home alone all day and sleeps. MawMaw "baby"sits when we go to market.
 
We have 2 dogs becuse dogs are pack animals. We have a pug and a rottie. You should see them play together. Cutest thing you ever saw! They are both crate trained and will go into their crates to “rest” and eat. Our son’s friend housesits when we go away, so he watches the dogs.

Worried about your dog being lonely while you’re gone? Think about adopting another one, perhaps from a senior dog rescue! We’ve had dogs for years, and always have found an even number works best than an odd number. We found a wonderful 10-year-old chocolate lab at a senior dog rescue last February, and Maggie is a very happy, contented, and devoted member of our household. And when we got her, she was already housetrained and housebroken. She makes a very nice companion to our 10-year-old one-eyed Jack Russell, Peanut.

Also, about that doggie odor–make sure your dog’s teeth are clean. When they have plaque, the bacteria from it (which is stinky) gets deposited on their fur when they lick themselves, and 99 times out of 100, that’s why your dog smells. It’s also why their bedding smells, too, because their fur comes in contact (naturally!) with what they sleep on. Simple but true!😃

Bassets are one of the funniest and best behaved dogs on earth! Maybe I’m just predjudiced because my Lucy is a basset baby! Lucy loves her St. Francis medal. Get one for Ladybug!😛

What is a Bouvier? I never heard of that breed.
 
St. Francis has never let us down on dogs or cats. I learned early on to pray for the right dog or cat to come our way as my mother was not a fan of pets. My mother’s prayers for me to stop bringing home every stray must have crossed with my prayers for my very own collie. A man who worked for my father had a collie who had puppies and he gave us one. No more strays.

Years later when the children were small we wanted a dog but were arguing over breeds. My husband grew up with German Shepherds, I was a collie fan. Another prayer to St. Francis as to what we should get resulted in our being offered a golden retriever puppy by a friend who bred them. We had talked about buying one. My sister had a golden and we loved him, but all the puppies were spoken for. Just as they were moving the person who was supposed to pick up the last puppy backed out, so she called and offered him to us. He was one of the best dogs we’ve ever had. When he died from bone cancer at a very old age 2 years ago, we didn’t think we’d ever find another dog that would be as wonderful. A year ago I started looking because I couldn’t stand not having a dog. Nothing clicked. So I sent St. Francis an SOS.

That very weekend I was spotted by a Japanese Chin puppy (a breed I had not experienced before) and knew she was the one. Princess Miyuki is a total love and a joy (though my husband and son tease me about my pseudo-dog and swear we’ll get another REAL dog someday).

As far as leaving a dog when you’re working, I’m home on vacation right now and she naps pretty much all afternoon with our cats. So did all our other dogs.
 
Congratulations!!! We wanted a dog too and I did some praying as well and just this last Sunday we got Clover… a reverse brindle floppy ear boxer. We are all exstatic! Have fun with Elmo:)

Personally, I don’t like to leave dogs home alone for more than a few hours at a time. When we do leave though, Elmo gets crated. Maybe that will change when he is better potty trained, but I’m not sure since we have 2 cats also.

As for vacations, usually our vacations are all places dogs could go to, so Elmo will always go with us. In the event that he can’t go, he will stay with my MIL, or she will come stay with him.

I would be afraid to leave a dog alone in a crate. What if a fire were to break out or bad weather like a tornado hit while you were gone? The dog couldn’t escape from the crate. At least if the pet is loose there is a slight chance it can hide under the bed/in closet, basement, etc and escape the worst. Sorry, I always think of the worst case scenerios.😦 Also I have a window sticker for the fire dept. to notify them I have pets in the home.

I didn’t know such stickers exsisted in the event of fire. I am going to look into getting one. I think if there was a fire though and a firefighter needed to find my pet, it would be easier if it was in a crate in the family room, rather than hiding who knows where, mabye so scared it would try to attack? 🤷 I’ll check into it with the fire department.

Also, no tornados here. We have earthquakes every once in a while, but again, I think he would be safer in his crate in the event of an earthquake.
