The Jesuits in America don’t have a great reputation when it comes to orthodoxy. Especially when you look at a place like Notre Dame.

This guy, however, really embodies the spirit of Ignatius of Loyola and choosing Francis is a very hopeful thing indeed. Francis is my personal favorite saint. He was a diligent reformer while being humble and obedient at the same time.

Our Holy Father’s history shows that he follows the same path. Doctrinally sound, not afraid to confront those forces who wish to sweep the Church’s teachings aside and yet constantly reaching out.

So sorry for your loss! Francis (Xavier) is my confirmation name. It may be a hat tip to his Jesuit order.

Notre Dame is not a Jesuit University; it is the Congregation of the Holy Cross at ND.
 
I’m very happy with the choice. I’m happy he’s orthodox. Reading his comments on SSA, on abortion and euthanasia told me what I needed to know. The comment about him visiting a hospice and washing and kissing the feet of those with AIDS… it made me cry. Exactly the kind of man the Church should have. Praise God.
 
Extremely happy for a conservative Pope. 😃

His parents are actually from Italy, so it’s the next best thing ;).

Is he modeling the original st Francis, or Francis Xavier?

I like the Jesuits. They have great scholarship and have produced some good theology books in the US.
 
A Jesuit Pope taking the name Francis – how cool is that!!

I saw an online story that referred to St Francis as “the founder of monasticism” while one of the talking heads on TV declaimed “Forty percent of all Catholics – one in four – live in South America”. Huh?

Qy: In his address asking prayers of Benedict XVI, did His Holiness refer to him as “our Bishop emeritus”?
 
Now I am wondering if he took his name in honor of St Francis of Assisi or St Francis Xavier…
 
Good to hear how Conservative he is. I wonder, how forceful of a spokesman is he - does anyone know?
 
I like the name ‘Bergoglio’. Where do they come up with such fat and jolly names?

The way it sounds he’s very orthodox and also noted for being a very humble man of the people. Sounds like a good fit.

See, I told you he would be Italian! I’m biased (Xavier my confirmation name), but vote Xavier.

Yes! I am a Boston College alum (Jesuits) and yes the Jesuits are my favorite!!!

This should interesting!
 
Anyone know his position on the Latin Mass? I always understood Pope Benedict XVI as a strong supporter, but I have no idea where Pope Francis stands.
