We have a POPE!!!!

The simple cross Pope Francis wore went he greeted the crowd is much what a Jesuit would do, instead of wearing the ornate crosses that JP II and Pope Benedict wore when they greeted the crowd.

It will be little things like that that people will see with this pope. It will be interesting to see how he lives in Rome when he refused the fancy living quarters in Argentina, and live in a simple, small apartment instead.
 
So humble, so informal, felt so sorry for him, like he didn’t want to be there, the stone the builders reject shall be the Lords corner stone… seems like a man of compassion, not too ready to pick up that stone, forgives seventy times seven…

Has that been confirmed? I don’t watch CNN. EWTN didn’t say anything. But don’t get me wrong-- that would be music to my ears, as St. Francis of Assisi is my favorite saint, other than maybe St. Joseph. But those are two saints you can’t really compare, both from the entirely times they lived in that and the fact that we know so little about St. Joseph. I imagine the two of them would be great friends if contemporaries.

St. Francis was also my Dad’s patron when he converted in 2006 :). St. Francis is also one of my favorites because he’s the patron saint of animals. I love this Pope already! 🙂

Left the TV on very low and drifted off to sleep, not really expecting white smoke through the night hours. Woke just as the TV was showing white smoke and the crowds in Rome cheering around 5am I think it was/
Pope Francis - a Latin American (with Italian parents) and first non European Pope in 1000 years, a Jesuit (first Jesuit Pope) and one who has taken the name Pope Francis (no Latin numeral). Departures from tradition. I was delight to hear that he is conservatively minded theologically and in taking the name of simply “Francis” that perhaps his prayer and our hope is that his time will be marked by poverty, humility, simplicity and rebuilding in line with St Francis of Assisi. That his motto is “pittiable but chosen” and I sure do not envy the task ahead of him in any way. As a Jesuit, a past provincial in his order and his other experiences in Church administrative positions, perhaps he will be the one to simplify and bring into line the administration in Rome.
Apparently when Archbishop in Beunos Aires I think it was, he refused to live in the Archbishop’s palace and opted for a simple apartment and cooked his own food. He often travelled to work via bus. A man of the people and loved by them.
Daily prayer for Pope Francis as he certainly does have a mammoth and unenviable task on his plate.

Speculating on why Bergoglio had chosen the name Francis, Rosica said, “Francis of Assisi is a saint that transcends the Catholic Church and is loved by all people, a saint who reached out for simplicity … poverty and care for the poor.”
 
Having just woken up (i’m a uni student, ok! :D), and hearing the news, I must say I am beyond words, and full of hope, happiness and vigor to support our new Pope. From what little I have read about him, he seems like such a great, humble, and caring man and I honestly cannot be more thrilled. I can’t wait to hear his first address as Pope Francis (and I like many others it would seem are completely giddy over his choice of name too):extrahappy::bounce::bowdown2: :gopray2:

It is an especially wonderful time to be a Catholic :grouphug:

Cool!! He’s also patron of Colorado, where I live! :). I guess they’re saying, though, that the Pope took his name from St. Francis Xavier, not Assisi. That’s ok, i love him anyway :). He sounds like he’s conservative & has great compassion for the poor…exactly the sort of Pope we need 👍

It crashed for me a couple of times. At least I couldn’t get my screen to refresh. I was delighted. There is no better reason for a site to get overloaded!

This is a little misleading as he was not Pope when he said this, but still a Cardinal. It’s still a valid position but I think it’s misleading to imply the Pope said this as a Pope.

I also heard this, but in the context that if a partner knew they had a sexually transmitted disease they could use a condom as to not spread disease but not as a contraceptive device.

That’s two sources saying the same thing.

Well S. Francis Xavier was no doubt named after S. Francis of Assisi, so it’s all in the family …
