it’s a pretty big fish. the public would be more accepting of the church if they allowed this.
It might. Meanwhile, millions of Catholics are involved in worldwide missions to help the poor and disenfranchised around the world with little or no notice. We are frying bigger fish. If we wanted to put our best foot forward, maybe we should call more attention to these significant aspects of the Church of Christ. Whether priests are married or unmarried is not in the public domain, IMO. It goes much deeper than how the secular world views us. In the final analysis, unless it adopts a secular view on everything, the public will never be accepting of the Church, which goes to why it cannot fathom the unmarried priesthood. .

Bingo. As long as the RCC doesn’t change its tune on abortion and gay marriage, etc, it won’t matter whether priests can marry. They may think that that is the first step to these other changes, but a married clergy by itself won’t change their minds about the Church.

Undoubtedly, The Church is going through a period of crisis (with Christ finally victorious is our guarantee). We do not sacrifice Truth to majority opinion. The former is of God and the latter is of this world.
No matter how dire and dreadful things may seem, no matter how much we seem to be failing, we have the promise that Christ finally will be victorious.
Our task is to proclaim The Gospel, not to convert all to The Gospel although such is The Lord’s and our ardent desire and that for which we work, that no person should be lost.

It is up to the individual and their free will whether they accept or reject what is proclaimed. We cannot change The Gospel or the Word of God in order to convert the many. We cannot distort truth in order to convert.
Luke Ch8
[11] Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. [12] And they by the way side are they that hear; then the devil cometh, and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved. [13] Now they upon the rock, are they who when they hear, receive the word with joy: and these have no roots; for they believe for a while, and in time of temptation, they fall away. [14] And that which fell among thorns, are they who have heard, and going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and yield no fruit. [15] But that on the good ground, are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit in patience.
Matthew Ch 24
[11] And many false prophets shall rise, and shall seduce many. [12] And because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold. [13] But he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved. [14] And this gospel of the kingdom, shall be preached in the whole world, for a testimony to all nations, and then shall the consummation come. [15] When therefore you shall see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place: he that readeth let him understand.

Catholic Catechism:

The Church’s ultimate trial
675
Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers.574 The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth575 will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.576
676 The Antichrist’s deception already begins to take shape in the world every time the claim is made to realize within history that messianic hope which can only be realized beyond history through the eschatological judgment. The Church has rejected even modified forms of this falsification of the kingdom to come under the name of millenarianism,577 especially the “intrinsically perverse” political form of a secular messianism.578
  • 677 The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection.579** The kingdom will be fulfilled, then, not** by a historic triumph of the Church through a progressive ascendancy**,** but only by God’s victory over the final unleashing of evil, which will cause his Bride to come down from heaven.580 God’s triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgment after the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world.581

Excellent refresher, which is full of faith and hope for believers, and should help promote a word of caution for unbelievers not to buy into the messianic secular message. In every case but one, if it looks too good to be true, it is too good to be true. Only God delivers the perfect solution,

All I can think when I hear for calls for married clergy is “don’t we have bigger fish to fry right now?”
Right now the Church is in desperate need fro more priest to help with the “fish fry”. We have a new married priest at our church who was an Episcopal priest and people absolutely love him. There is a different vibe about him. He seems very comfortable.

I agree. But I really don’t want married priests! This is why, first of all a priests CHOOSES to be celibate! They could choose to marry but they don’t want marriage.

In the past decades (starting in the 60’s) there were many “cafeteria style” Catholics priests and nuns teaching in the seminaries and in my opinion this is what started all the scandals. Now that most of these priests and nuns are retired, I think and hope we will have a resurgence of faithful priests and nuns. Especially with our new faithful Pope!

I am not for married men becoming priests because they will become too divided in their ministries. First Priests are married to the Church, the bride of Christ!

If priests marry and have a family of their own they will be very busy with their family and their wife.

The Church will have to support the priests family as well.

And to that I will relay a personal experience of mine. I once mentioned to a parent that I noticed that her son always has a rosary with him at school (public school). She told me that he prayed it every day. I said, “well, maybe he’ll be a priest one day.” She responded, “not over my dead body!”.

Wheeeee! Therein lies why we have a shortage of vocations folks. We do not cultivate a love for the priesthood.

I’m sure he does seem comfortable now that he has found the one true Church.😉
I wonder what he thinks of the married priesthood. Most I have talked with that were married Catholic clergy seem to be as against the married priesthood as anything.
Lets try not to find the exception that proves the rule on every thing. Married clergy can bring a host problems we could not even fathom. Not only that but I’m not sure what it solves?🤷

No doubt married priest would have their own problems to work through. What it would help solve is the incredibly short amount of priest we have right now, maybe not where you are, but the world is in desperate need of more priest. Do you have any ideas on a solution?

Yes. I do.
Deep Catholic theology and formation.
Coupled with parents actually doing their jobs and raising their kids in the faith.
And of course prayer.

Why in the world do you think it would help solve the shortage of priests?
Is there some kind of priest boom in the Anglican Church that I am unaware of.🤷
Should they have children? Can current priests get married if they want to? You need to study the history of this discipline before you spout the tired rhetoric of the progressives…

As in most things
Quality over quantity.

Exactly. One evangelical pastor said that, if people need more pastors, then parents need to give birth to more children. 😃

Our you a priest?Did your parents not do their jobs? Why aren’t you s priest? Why should any one be willing to be one before you?

Don’t forget - Benedict XVI said Mass at the same prison

I think it is important that we know this. People have started comparing Pope Francis with Pope Emeritius Benedict as if the former pope was less of a servant. 😦
And of course, this is a flawed comparison. Pope Benedict was well suited to his time and place in the Church. He followed an era of priestly problems and dissenting laity and reaffirmed the solid foundation upon which the Church is founded. He made it crystal clear that Mother Church would not modernize in some relativistic manner, but that she would continue to use eternal values to address modern problems and modern circumstances. Pope Benedict, now Emeritus, leaves at the Will of the Father, bringing a new Pope with different gifts and charisms to address the challenges facing the people of God in these fast moving and turbulent times. I would not be a bit surprised to see resignation as the new trend in the Papacy, giving way to using the best of resources available at any given time due to age, ability, and need. The humility shown by both men is truly remarkable in these days of power seeking and pride of accomplishment. If there is one thing the enemy cannot boast of, it’s humility, not that we should be boastful either, mind you. 😃 We boast Christ crucified, and that is the power of the gospel, and the source of our strength. As Cardinal Dolan is fond of saying, “We adore you, O Christ and we praise you, because by your cross You have redeemed the world.”

Our you a priest?Did your parents not do their jobs? Why aren’t you s priest? Why should any one be willing to be one before you?
There was no need to make that personal. I will say that if I were blessed with a child (a son), I would most definitely encourage the priesthood in whatever way that I could do so.

And lest we lose sight of it, the priesthood is a calling, not a job that anyone can aspire to. We can foster vocations in our children, but we cannot make them happen. God calls, we can only help our children respond to His call.

Jesus was largely well received at first, except in his home town, and this did last for quite some time, but if Francis (pardon the simple and affectionate abbreviation he invites by his manner) is really following in Jesus’ footsteps (which no doubt I believe he is), we will see the media at some point or other call for and assist at his public crucifixion. The Church cannot proclaim the teachings of Christ without receiving flak from the press whose worldly view is just the opposite. If that day comes (when the press remains kind toward the Church), it can only mean we are experiencing a worldwide conversion to Christianity, the likes of which we have not seen since the Holy Roman Empire. I welcome it if it comes, but I’m not getting my hopes up too high. Someday, we do have to reach a time when we beat our swords into plowshares, don’t we? And Our Lady did promise an era of peace, didn’t she? Why not now? Oh, I wish! Haven’t we seen enough of world’s brand of brotherhood and peace? Let’s pray that our rosaries and Mary’s great love for mankind, to which her Son entrusted her, will bring about a time of peace in our own lifetime. That would be grand and it is something worth praying for! Thy kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven!
To coin your words in another way we could say any genuine authentic work of God always turns out sooner or later to be a SIGN OF CONTRADICTION to the world.
no matter how righteous pope Francis is the world will seek to humiliate him and discredit him.

And lest we lose sight of it, the priesthood is a calling, not a job that anyone can aspire to. We can foster vocations in our children, but we cannot make them happen. God calls, we can only help our children respond to His call.
You are right. Working at an all boys Catholic high school with about 1100 student they have deep theological formation and are taught to be men for others; however, I cannot remember the last graduate that became a priest. They are extremely loyal to their school, even those who are not catholic and most go to continue to help the world in many ways, but they don’t become priest.
