We should do away with the UN! It does not work

Ani Ibi:
Geldain: I noticed that you had also quoted the following material, but did not say whom you were quoting. Some folks are on my ignore list. As I was not able to locate the author of this material, I am attributing the material to “unknown poster”:
So Ani, do you find you understand my positions better or worse since you’ve put me on your ignore list?

Do you think the US would have more, or less, dialog with Iran, China, et all if we put them on our “ignore” list (i.e. withdraw from the UN)?

Geldain:
Respectully, what does this post have to do with this thread?
Surely you’re joking. Phillip summed up very succinctly the gist of this thread.
(Ani Ibi) Don’t answer a question with a question. If you don’t know the answer, say so.
Try actually reading my response instead of looking for some far-fetched way you can claim I’ve breached the rules, and so avoid the subject. You will find my answer very fully answered your question and showed why “the UN” is excused from your bizarre allegations.

This is simply a false assertion.
A novel approach to debate indeed. You simply deny you have said something which is written here in black and white. You claimed to know what 5-decades a day thinks. Trying to deny it only makes you look more foolish.

My beef is about Rwanda.
I think if you bothered checking some facts you would find that Rwanda IS a nation-state.
My “fevered mind”? This is charitable in what way?
It’s far more charitable to belive you typed this nonsense while in a delirious fever than the alternative of assuming that you actually believe what you said.

However despite the ravings of a few rabid chauvinists, there is no way the US will ever leave the UN. Even Bush is smart enough to see that remaining in the UN is greatly in the US’s self-interest.

“Bizarre allegations” is a charitable assessment of my post how exactly? As for reading your response, here is the “actual” exchange to which you refer:
40.png
Petergee:
the only reason “they” (some UN agencies) promote abortion and contraception is because their masters, the majority of member States, tell them to.
Ani Ibi:
This excuses the UN in some way?
Did you write the following?
40.png
Petergee:
And what do you suggest people working for the UN should do? Refuse to carry out the orders they receive from the Member States?
If you did write the latter quote, then you answered a question with a question. The Forum Guidelines request that we do not do that.

As for answering my question: my question was about the authority of the member states acting as an excuse for the ineffectual manner in which the UN conducts business. Your response was the following:
And what do you suggest people working for the UN should do? Refuse to carry out the orders they receive from the Member States? That would be the right thing for individuals to do if the order is immoral, but the only result would be that those individuals would be dismissed and new staff hired who were willing to carry out the policy determined by the Member States. “The UN” is a vehicle for the Member States’ directives. It has no will or policy of its own. Blaming “the UN” is like blaming the police because you disagree with some of the laws they have a duty to enforce, laws made by their rulers.
Please note that your response is self-contradictory. On the one hand, you concede that UN employees are justified in refusing to carry out immoral orders from the nation states. Then you say that the employees would be dismissed were they to do that. If it is justified for UN employees to refuse to carry out immoral orders then why is it unjustified for the UN itself to refuse to carry out immoral orders?

In any case, in spite of your claim that I “will find [your] answer very fully answered [my] question”: actually your answer did not address my question at all. My question had to do with the alleged ineffectualness of the UN. Your answer had to do with the UN “only following orders.”
A novel approach to debate indeed. You simply deny you have said something which is written here in black and white. You claimed to know what 5-decades a day thinks. Trying to deny it only makes you look more foolish.
Claiming that I look “foolish” is charitable how?

Without any quoted material from you to clarify your accusation, I have no idea to what you are referring. The only thing that 5-Decades-a-Day has posted on this thread is the following:
40.png
5-Decades-a-Day:
Whether the UN “works” or not is beside the point. The US should just get out, period.
Please be kind enough to quote any of my posts on this thread in which I claimed to know what 5-Decades-a-Day thinks. You can’t. Because I made no such claim.

On the other hand, did you say this in response to 5-Decades-a-Day’s post?
40.png
Petergee:
You think the US doesn’t “need” the UN because the US is at present far more powerful than any other country and can basically force the rest of the world to do what it wants, and the UN is only an annoyance to the US doing so.
If you did say that, then please be kind enough to demonstrate where in 5-Decades-a-Day’s post he says the US doesn’t need the UN. Moreover please be kind enough to demonstrate that you are not assuming or saying that “you know what another person thinks or needs.”

Petergee:

Are you suggesting that I do not check facts? Yes or no, please.

In any case, I believe you are building a strawman. Rwanda is a nation state. My point is that Al Queda is not a nation state. But since you have brought up the analogy, here is what I have to say in the interests of further clarification:

If the UN did not do the job it was designed to do in the case of Rwanda (a nation state) then how can the UN be expected to do the job it was not designed to do in the case of Al Queda (a group of nationless unlawful combatants)?

It’s far more charitable to belive you typed this nonsense while in a delirious fever than the alternative of assuming that you actually believe what you said.
Judging someone’s point of view to be “nonsense” is charitable in what way? Persisting in the accusation that my point of view is not the product of research and reason but rather the result of “a delirious fever” is charitable exactly how? Do you have some special privilege for making these judgments?

However despite the ravings of a few rabid chauvinists, there is no way the US will ever leave the UN. Even Bush is smart enough to see that remaining in the UN is greatly in the US’s self-interest.
Do you also have some special privilege to namecall?

I’m wondering if others would like to get back to the topic of this thread which is about doing way with the UN because it does not work. What do people think? Does the UN work? Or does it not work? Is there some other reason for doing away with the UN beside the premise that it does not work?

end of post

“Bizarre allegations” is a charitable assessment of my post how exactly?
the name ‘United Nations’ hints at the purpose for which this body was created. That purpose is inextricably bonded to the concept of ‘nation state.’ The War on Terror is fought against unlawful combatants who are nationless. Therefore the UN has nothing to say about the matter.
I think “bizarre” is being charitable at the expense of honesty.
you answered a question with a question
Gee that doesn’t seem to have bothered 5-decades-a-day, except that s/he c/wouldn’t answer my question.
I’m afraid the only self-contradiction comes from your attempts to tangle the debate in semantics. Again, if you bothered actually reading my posts instead of just quoting them for misuse, you would see I said that “the UN” is merely a vehicle for the Member States, with no policy of its own. If “the UN”, i.e. ALL of the UN’s employees refused to carry out the Member States’ orders, the Member States would simply dismiss them all and employ others. It would not “do away with the UN” as you fantasise. And contrary to your repeated and totally unfounded implication, over 99% of the UN’s work is not only NOT immoral, but in fact deeply moral.

Please be kind enough to demonstrate where in 5-Decades-a-Day’s post he says the US does need the UN. Moreover please be kind enough to demonstrate that you are not assuming or saying that “you know what another person thinks or needs.” I don’t have to “claim” you look foolish, you’re doing a darn good job of demonstating it. Whether you are actually a fool, I have no idea and it’s not my place to judge you.
Are you suggesting that I do not check facts? Yes or no, please.
Yes. Are you suggesting that you have checked “facts” on this matter from any source other than the “Armed Forces Journal”? What other “research” have you done?

Maybe the UN would function more effectively if it got moved to Rwanda. But just for a period of time… maybe five years… and then the whole thing would be moved to some other trouble spot… or to some especially poor country… Burkina Fasso… for five years, and so on.

Some of the UN operations are not in New York. I can’t list all the locations, but they are around the world also. Denmark is one of the locations.

I detest the failings that they have exhibited, but I really think they have the right to exist and we have a responsibility to help get them on track. A world forum is good. I don’t think they are very effective on some levels, but they have also done some good.

Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water.

The United nations is a diplomatic organization. They dabble in other operations, but that is their primary function; to talk. If you want to get rid of them for that, then you are against them doing what they were created to do.

They need to be disbanded IMO… or least… move them outta NYC… and completely off US soil. Again… this is JMO.

We’d be better off if the UN were disbanded. One of the biggest problems in Africa right now is all the “aid” coming in from the UN that props up dictators & tyrants. All that money going in only causes the african people to be dependant upon other govenrments and they will NEVER become self-sufficient.

Can I ask for a broader explanation? That’s all I ever really want…a good debate with well thought out reasoning and no personal attacks.

The myriad of links posted on this site alone should be enough… ( I reallly don’t have the time to look them up right now ) Food-for-oil… Rwanda… UN officials in the sex and drug trade etc. There world population ’ control’… endorsed by Planned Parenthood no less… blah.

If I may just give my vote on this issue: I agree with many of the criticisms given here of the UN, but still, I would vote to keep it in operation. The concerns given here indicate that there may be a need for a restructuring of the UN, but I would prefer that it remain in operation in spite of all its problems, because I fear that things may become even worse than they are now (if that is conceivable) without the UN.

Well, see, Fox is in the right wing’s pocket, so I won’t even bother. Thanks anyway, though.
Uh, your previous post stated that you liked a good debate with well thought out arguments. So how is dismissing a priest’s argument because he happens to contribute to Fox, a well thought out argument?

Because Fox is off limits, and everything having to do with it. If you can’t at least give me P.J. O’Rourke, you aren’t even trying. Fox will ALWAYS fall on the same side, no matter what. I tried. I did. I had Fox on and going between them and the networks during the entire elections, and I’m sorry, Fox is anything but a fair and balanced argument.

From where I sit, whether or not Fox is biased in any fashion has nothing to do with whether we should do away with the UN.

I didn’t bring it up. I just pointed out any opinions they have on the U.N. are probably colored by their likely beleif that the U.N. should back the U.S. in everything. Actually, it isn’t even likely; I heard them say it, many times.
