vern humphrey:
Why not – other than they might, as said earlier, move on to better things soon, which would be inconvenient for the employer.
For the same confounded reason you gave me - they would be held back! It works both ways. It’s not a matter of convenience for the employer - not one bit. I would be glad to have a doctor on staff, but in reality is that in HIS BEST INTERESTS? Second, is it in the best interest of the company? An employer-employee relationship should be beneficial to both. If it’s not, then a change is in order.
How so? I’m not putting them in chains, am I? They can move on whenever they want, can’t they?
You accuse me of holding people back from striving but fail to realize that you would be holding people back if you allow overqualified people to take lesser jobs. Again, does it make sense to have a doctor scrub floors or in the ER saving lives??
I’ve met people who love to do carpenter work - why should they strive to become a contractor? I’ve met people who loved to teach children - should they become a principal? See what I’m getting at? If you find something to do - do it with all your might and if you enjoy it then what a great bonus. Isn’t that enough?
Those who are satisfied with what they are doing already - refer to example above.
And I pointed out you assume a static analysis. The person who is stitching a shirt today may be a foreman next year, a manager a couple of years later, a vice-president some time after that, and so on.
That’s fine if he wants to move up. I welcome it in my own organization. The point remains that not everyone is management material nor is everyone interested in becoming managers. Your point SEEMS to be that EVERYONE must strive or they are sinful at worst or lazy at best. Notice I said SEEMS that way. I’m trying to bring you back to the middle.
Did you not later in this post accuse me of twisting what you said? And are you not doing the same thing here? I said nothing at all about “standing around in suits.”
That’s simply the mental picture in my head in response to your post - right, wrong or indifferent.
I say who starts as a sewer is not limited to that job for life. They should strive to move up.
Well, by golly we agree!
No one said there is anything “wrong” with a factory job. I merely point out that everyone has a right to work to better himself.
Again, we wholeheartedly agree with each other.
First of all, I think I’m entitled to an apology for that remark. I have not called you names, now have I?
Not until I get an apology for being an exploiter - refer to quotes from you below. You basically accused me of exploiting people and liking it.
Quotes from vern:
And that is justification for locking the sewers into their jobs for life? That sounds like exploitation to me!!
**
1. Some people have a duty to be exploited. If you’re a shirt sewer, you must remain a shirt sewer.
Secondly, people have a right to strive to better themselves.
Again I agree if they WANT TO.
Then why do you oppose the notion that people should strive to reach their full potential?
I don’t. But I don’t think every person MUST try to reach this idealistic “full potential” you speak of.
Once again, you substitute a personal attack for reasoned argument.
I merely offered you the implications of your arguments – and carefully stated I had no intention of offending. You responded with a personal attack.
And you did that twice in the same post.
I regret saying that about your political views.
Your intention was naive at best. It’s like saying to George Bush - hey I like you buddy, but your view on this really sucks! You preceded your faulty implications of my stance on the issues by insulting my intelligence.
If I created a list of your supposed positions you would then accuse me of putting words in your mouth. I stated from my first post that I knew of your extensive background and accomplishments (a kudo to you in case you didn’t notice) and needed help understanding your position.
You responded by basically telling me that I thought exploiting people for my own benefit was okay. So, who is attacking who?
I should know better than to reach a compromise with you. In the past we have come to the exact opposite positions and ended up in fruitless debate. I wish you no harm - only peace and happiness. I do not wish to insult or injure. I find that I am a perfectly fallible human with a zeal that isn’t balanced with compassion. So, please forgive me for being myself.
Peace…
