Wear a Scapular?

I recently had surgery. I wear the brown scapular and, while I had to remove my crucifix and my wedding band, the pre-op nurse taped my scapular to my hospital ID band.

During my stay in the hospital, I was given a green scapular which is meant for those recovering from illness. This surgery was very delicate and we anticipated serious complications, especially infections. To date, nothing. My recovery has been, in the surgeons’ words “perfect”.
 
While DH and I have been wearing scapulars for a few months, we were enrolled yesterday, the feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. We didn’t plan to get it done then, but a strange series of events brought it to be. Makes me think for sure that Mary wanted us to enroll finally!

Yep for 2 years now. I was enrolled on July 16th 2002. Wonderful time of grace for me. I would advise those thinking about it to think no longer but be enrolled. Don’t take it off unless in the shower.

I try to wear one all the time but I have a lawn mowing service in Kansas and through the summer months I find that they have a habit of melting sometime midday in the humidity…I suppose a medal would be OK. Can anyone tell me if a 4 way medal has an scapular medal in it?

I haven’t worn a scapular since I was an altar boy in the 50’s. It was Our Lady of Mt Carmel parish in Pa.

Yes,

The four way medal is usually the Scapular Medal, Mirraculous Medal, St. Joseph and St. Christopher.

I’ve had my scapular that I got (and wore a few times) as a kid… but it itched so darn much that it was truly distracting and in a kid’s eyes… suffering.

I’m seriously considering wearing a scapular again. Would love to wear it as a medal, once I get enrolled with a cloth one.

There’s another thread on this board about what you wear around your neck… there’s a discussion about scapulars there.

I will soon be enrolled in my fourteenth scapular. Of course, I don’t wear all those cloth scapulars themselves, usually just the brown…but the great thing about a Scapular Medal is that it can stand in for as many scapulars you are enrolled in (as long as it is simply blessed once for each scapular) so I still am wearing 14 scapulars all the time with my medal. I have had three or four scapular medals blessed for all 14 (at the same time).

The scapulars I have and am enrolled in are those that make up the 5-Fold, namely Red Scapular of the Passion, Black Scapular of our Our Lady of Sorrows, Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Blue Scapular of the Immaculate Conception, and the Whiteh Scapular of the Holy Trinity.

Besides these I am in the Mercedian Scapular, the Black Scapular of St. Benedict, the Purple-Yellow Scapular of St. Joseph, The White Scapular of St. Dominic, The Blue-Black shield-shaped scapular of St. Michael, the Medal and Scapular of the Holy Face, The Scapular of the Immaculate Heart, the Scapular of the Precious Blood, the Scapular of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

I have a Green Scapular of course too…but that is sort of a different type of thing, isn’t it?

I usually wear the brown scapular itself, and on the strings are a Miraculous medal, a Scapular Medal (for the other 13), a St. Benedict Medal and a Crucifix.

For lighter wear, like sleep sometimes, I can get that same combination of medals by just wearing my St. Benedict Crucifix (Crucifix with a St. Benedict Medal on it) and my Four Way Medal.

For water, I always at least where a plain scapular medal.

I also am sure to carry in my pockets my Rosary Case which contains my Rosary and copy of The Oration (“A True Letter of Our Saviour Jesus Christ”). On its zipper is another 4-way medal…but this one does not say “I am a Catholic Please Call a Priest” on the back…it has a St. Anthony and Infant Jesus of Prague instead…

I also carry my Green Scapular, My Third Class Relic of the True Cross, My Agnus Dei wax locket, my Sacred Heart Badge, and a small Case with those other medals mentioned I’m not wearing at the time (in case I need to switch into them for sleep or water) as well as a medal that contains a drop of Lourdes water, my holy face medal, a Crucifix with the Stations of the Cross on it, and my Pardon Crucifix. I also have ordered the entire collection of those pewter Saint and Third Class Relic Medals that are commonly sold on the internet. I’ll have to see how heavy and voluminous the collection as a whole is…but I will see if I can have a third case with all those medals in it…good thing for Cargo Pants…

I also have a collection of various Chaplets and such that I keep at home at my “Shrine” at home…

I have pretty much every Non-Third-Order official Scapular (so not the Franciscan, since I am not a third order franciscan) I could find on the internet on websites that actually show pictures (because I want to make sure I’m getting quality goods and the scapular actually meet specifications)…but on a side note does anyone know where I can find the Black Scapular of the Passionists? It should have their symbol on the back saying “Iesu XPI Passio”…
 
I’ve been wearing one regularly for about 2 years. I keep waiting for someone to ask me what it is, but either the people who see it know what it is (doubt it) or they are to shy to ask. I have noticed that there seem to be less near occasions of sin while wearing it. Especially the sins one would commit with the eyes.

I was just enrolled yesterday and have been wearing it since July 17. I think Satan is trying to get me to take it off because I have been feeling like I shouldn’t wear it. Does anyone else out there have trouble doing the daily things you are supposed to do? The Rosary hasn’t become a habit yet and I feel guilty when I forget. Any advice, I was really felt called to this until yesterday. I did it because I felt that Satan was the cause. Help!
 
Our first communicants usually receive a gift box from padrinos with a scapular, and get these blessed after Mass, but I would like to enroll them in brown scapular (with suitable catechesis), perhaps when they make their first confession. Can someone direct me to a source for the proper rite or blessing. Thanks.

This rite / blessing is done by ONLY a priest.

So… get thee to a priest… immediately after Mass sometime would be a perfect time for it. Takes just about a minute or so, if that, of the priest’s time. He’d be delighted to do it on the spot, I’m sure!

Rite for the Blessing of and Enrolment in the Scapular of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel

This is the correct form of blessing and enrolment for the Brown Scapular. The rite has two forms, the second being the alternative shorter form.

I – Preliminaries
  1. The blessing of, and enrollment in, the Scapular of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel should preferably take place within a community celebration.
  2. The enrollment of the Scapular implies affiliation to the Carmelite Family. Priests and deacons have the faculties for blessing Scapulars; other authorized persons may enroll the faithful.
  3. The traditional form of the Scapular must be used for the blessing and enrollment. It may then be replaced by the appropriate medal.
  4. The blessing of and enrollment in the Scapular takes place according to the rites and prayers hereunder. The usual form includes the opening rite, a reading of the Word of God and the intercessions, the prayer of blessing and the enrollment in the scapular the closing rite. In this manner the meaning of the Scapular in the lives of the faithful who receive it is fully conveyed.
  5. It is necessary that in both formulas, the spiritual meaning of the graces attached to the Scapular of our Lady of Mount Carmel be expressed, as also the obligations assumed through this sign of devotion to the holy Virgin.
II – Rite for the Blessing of and Enrollment in the Scapular

it is approved by the church, and combines the five most popular scapular devotions

The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
The Red Scapular of the Passion of Christ
THe Blue Scapular of the Immaculate Conception
THe Black Scapular of the Sorrows of Mary
The White Scapular of the Holy Trinity

there are prayers and devotions for each scapular, and graces that also come with each scapular.

You can do a google search on the five-fold scapular to find more information on it.

There is a scapular confraternity you can enroll in for the Black Scapular (Servites), the Blue Scapular (Marians of the Immaculate Conception), the Brown Scapular (Carmelites), however the Red and White don’t require enrollment into a scapular confraternity, because once your invested, your part of the spiritual family.

The Blue, and Black scapulars have nice certificates that outline the devotions, and enrollment into their confraternites.

I had surgery a few years ago to repair a crushed tib/fib and offset fractures of each. It resulted in 2 plates and 15 screws put in 2 days before Christmas. I was thrilled that one of the first questions my daughter asked me when I was moved into my hospital room was “How will I get to Midnight Mass?” (my husband isn’t Catholic). I managed to get out of the hospital Christmas Eve morning and we got to Mass at Midnight (our house guest drove).

But the reason this story gets told here is that I’d forgotten that the Doctor was amazed 14 weeks later when he OK’d me to get back on skis, before the end of the season. It was a trip to see him do a double take on the follow-up xrays as he saw complete re-calicification, and watch as I walked up and down the hall without a trace of a limp and raise up on my toes showing an incredible range of motion in the ankle (the crush was just barely above the ankle).

The more time that has gone by (ok, so it aches occationally) the more I’ve realized how blessed I was in my recovery. I’ve met people who have had serious infections (and I was on an immuno-suppressant for Rhumatoid Arthritis at the time) with similar bone surgery.

When I was heading towards the tree that got the better of my leg, approaching it head on, my instant prayers was “Please Dear God, I have a child to raise”. As I torqued around and was heading it at the tree with my back-bone heading for it dead-on, again “Please Dear God, I have a child to raise”. I then swung around and found that I merely needed to roll out of the way, but with one ski still attached, there was not rolling and BANG my leg and the tree made sudden, violent contact.

As I said to someone I later met who survived a motorcycle accident, what I then felt was the most wonderful pain, for it meant I was alive and would be living to raise my daughter! There are worse things than pain and suffering! I was blessed to recognize it then and I have been pleased to know this truth since then.

Yup, I wear a scapular and have been thrilled to have the privilege of belonging to the Church that makes such graces available.

I’ve worn one for about a year, since joining the Lay Carmelite group in our area. Thanks to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, I’ve gotten more serious about my faith, and living according to the Commandments and the teachings of the Church, and service. But it ain’t boring because I’ve got a long way to go yet- with the help of Our Lord and Our Lady! Pray for an end to abortion and war. God bless.
