Wearing a Rosary for Chastity purposes?

What if wearing an unblessed Rosary is the only thing that can remind me to remain chaste and help me in times of temptation? Is it still unacceptable? I don’t think it’s sacrilegious if it isn’t blessed, it’s not for fashion (publicly displayed), and I have an actual devotion to Mary. What’s the general consensus here on wearing Rosaries?

I don’t understand the need of having something “remind” you to remain chaste and help you in times of temptation. Don’t you know that sex outside of marriage is a sin? And that all sin, most especially grievous sin, is to be avoided?

Remaining chaste is a commitment of the will. If you are committed to Christ, then the chastity thing should be easy. If you don’t have a “crutch” to remind you, then who will you blame if you fall into sin?

Avoid the times and places where temptation is strong and you won’t need to worry about it.

Okay I think that’s what I meant. I’m incredibly stupid when it comes to avoiding occasions of sin and I need all I can to help me out of that. I’m learning the meaning of sexuality and I know it’s not something to be taken lightly so don’t worry.

The question to me is, is the OP planning to wear the Rosary on the inside or the outside of his/her clothing? Will the Rosary be visible to other people?

You do bring up a good point, reminding me that wearing a Scapular under one’s clothes could work very well in helping to avoid temptation.

We are also physical creatures, it makes sense that we have both physical things and spiritual things to “lead us not into temptation.”

Are we to continue sitting in the upper room in fear waiting for the “fad to pass”?..Sorry if this sounds harsh or retaliatory, this is just the counter argument that I believe in.

Absolutely. If there is a fad that is a certain abuse of something, surely the more reasonable thing to do is to actually show how it should be used properly.

Take Aristotle’s writings, for example, people were abusing those to challenge the Catholic idea of God. Now, what did St. Thomas do? He showed them how to use Aristotle properly.

I recommend you do the same, Scapularkid. Wear your rosary. Wear it with the humility of your own sinfulness and your pride in the cross of Christ.

Wear it on the outside, if you want. If you think it’s going to be a temptation for it to be a “fashion statement” then wear it unnoticed on the inside of your clothing.

here is my question,
Why is the rosary shaped like a neckelace??

Sometimes if you have a beltloop you can pull it though make a small hole and then pull it through and look like a monk or a nun!

The rosary is a private devotion. There is no canon law on the wearing of rosaries.In some cultures and among some ethnic groups, rosaries are worn around the neck. Madonna did not invent this, only perverted it.

There are different type of people. Some people need to hear things some people need to see things some people simply need to think things. In you case all you have to do is think about it. In our case, we need a visual reminder. Isn’t that the reason we have statues and picture of the saints?

It’s very much because that I take this statement with utter sincerity that I would encourage any devotional or pious practice to be used in avoiding sin.

We are spiritual and physical creatures. If physical things help to strengthen our will against sin, then they should be used - and regularly. Our Holy Faith is not just a spiritual faith, but also very much one where physical actions help to develop hope, faith and love.

Take for example, the cross, by looking at Christ’s cross helps me to remember what pain that he went through to save me. This inspires me not to sin again.

Wearing the rosary UNDER one’s clothing sounds like a good idea to me. After all it’s not meant to be worn and if the appeal of wearing a rosary goes away with the though of wearing it under your shirt then you probably shouldn’t wear it at all.
