You’ve surely seen enough comments on this thread and especially the “modesty” thread to know that it is rarely the modestly-dressed women making a commotion about how others are dressed. It’s usually some guy who thinks that pants were invented by Europeans and are just for men and we women are going to hell in a handbasket if we are so rebellious as to wear something other than a full-length skirt, even if we are snow-skiing or swimming.

LOL, that’s exactly what I meant. There’s a lot of shaming others when it comes to modesty or any topic distantly related to it. I know what you mean about the pants are only European and are just for men.

Oh good! I thought I was in trouble for pointing out (from my experience) that it’s a certain couple of men that tend to lie in wait on the modesty threads for the perfect time to jump in with a bunch of opinions taken from private revelations/apparitions and comments of Saints from past centuries taken out of context! We have a several of the “usual suspects” on modesty and “no pants” threads…I think you and I have encountered them before 😉
 
An irony often crosses my mind. Women (except the Masai) are encouraged to grow their hair long and then cover their heads. On the other hand, men in today’s society generally wear their hair short and are encouraged to uncover their heads.
The Catholic Church, unlike other denominations, have welcomed the expression of different cultures. What does canon law state when it comes to men uncovering their heads? I ask this because of the culture in which I work. Arab men in trobes wear headdress even indoors. This headdress identifies the man’s tribe and class within the tribe. Paul mainly preached to the gentiles. Would he have written the same advice, about men uncovering, in a letter to Jews?

Earlier Canon Law said men should bare their heads, but the Canon Law of 1983 says nothing. There’s no mention at all regarding any head covering/uncovering requirements for men or women, in the new Canon Law.

The other day a guy attended Mass wearing a baseball cap.

I would greatly appreciate you not harassing me on this forum! I was responding to Spunjalebi (not you) and was referencing a thread that was closed long before you joined CAF.
 
To the OP:

I wear a bandana all day long because of 1 Cor. 11 and the verse in scripture that says “pray without ceasing”.

At church I like to wear a nice black lace one. (black is generally for married women and white for young girls/unmarried)

Good for your daughter!
 
I have been wearing the mantilla at Church for about a year now, and I’ve recently started considering wearing some sort of headcovering all the time. I wish it wouldn’t be SO STRANGE to dress similar to the Muslims. At church, I’m often the only one wearing one, but I felt God telling me to do this a couple years back…I feel like I have a lot to say and lots of questions about this and other bible/modesty issues. I don’t know where to start, and I am also very put off by the snobbish, uncharitable, intellectually superior elite that seem to be on these threads. Some of you have already mentioned them. I have given up on CAF twice because i never found kind, patient, loving answers to my questions…
 
I really like the idea of wearing a veil or head covering at church. I really want to wear one, but I think I’d be too self-conscious since no one else wears anything like that. The dresscode at my church seems to be very modern. People come to my church in jeans and some girls where skirts that are so short that they’re practically shirts, and this is a catholic church. I’m only 19, so I’m afraid of getting weird looks.

When I was your age, many years ago, we wore long narrow scarves tied as headbands. You can find modern versions at Claire’s already tied. That way you could still be fashionable while wearing a head covering that is not as obvious as a mantilla or pashmina. In cooler months, you could wear a beret.

I’ve been wearing a veil to chruch since I was about 14 and I’m 23 now. When I went off to college or would go to any church where I was the only one in a veil I’d always get self-conscious. When ever I feel this way I find myself pulling my veil further up so it blocks my face from view more. I know it is childish “if I block my face you can’t see me” but it does make me feel a bit better. And every so often, some one will turn to me after mass and ask “Are you a nun?” and when I reply “no” they always look so confused, which makes me smile internally a bit. So I bet a fair number of people would probably look at you then go, “Nun” and then think nothing more of it. At least that’s what I tell myself. 😛
 
You mentioned that one daughter was interested and seemed to grasp the implications of wearing one - with regards to Church and family - but what about the others? Do they want to? Or would this be doing what my sister does? Maybe it doesn’t matter - I’ve seen some older women wear them on the Mass on EWTN but the only time my God Daughter’s have worn one have been for their first communion. I think it’s great she’s wanting to emmulate Mary!

yes,Nicole Elizabeth I feel the same way in regards to veiling – recently as a few months ago, I just do not want to show my piety especially do not want to stand out… i just imagine that Mary our Mother dressed and followed the custom of her time…what are your thoughts ?:confused:
 
I’m very into the idea of veiling, but are there any good, workable, alternatives to the WHITE lacy mantilla? That SHOUTS to my eyes, and I’d like something much more subdued.

Of course there are. 🤷 You could wear a brown, black, or another color of mantilla, or you could wear a completely different type of covering altogether. You could wear a snood, or a scarf, a hat or anything else that you want.

I’ll look into the snood! I’ve wanted to cover for a very long time. My DH thinks scarves are silly, and I feel anachronistic with a hat, but we have many women who wear the white mantillas at our church. I am not comfortable with that. Thank you 🙂

I have always admired the work of /URL woman. She makes Jewish headcoverings, but imagine she has lots of Catholic business as well. There are a bunch of Catholic women who make snoods, you should check out etsy.
 
I have to admit, I’ve been curious about veiling for some time. My concern is more that I would be the only woman in my parish who did (both at my old parish, and my new one), and I worry that my FH would think I was being silly, or that others would chastise me, or accuse me of being holier-than-thou. How did you ladies deal with it?
