You are misquoting me, or misunderstood what I meant.I have already agreed multiple times that as a guest, yes, you should give a gift if you can, but only if it comes from a true place of generosity and love, not if it is just something you feel obliged to do because the newlyweds will be upset with you if you don’t. I got involved in this thread to point out that it is kind of rude for an engaged couple to send out invitations with the expectation that those who come will all bring gifts. Avocadomom even went so far as to speak about these gifts as necessary and as something that, if you are not going to bring one, you need to get a special dispensation from the engaged couple before coming to the wedding to allow you to come without bringing a gift. To me that just seems so wrong. Gifts need to be freely given, they should not be coerced from people by the fear of being thought rude and thoughtless if they don’t bring a gift.
I did not say you needed to get a special dispensation before you came.
What I said/meant was that it would be less awkward, and less rude, to explain why no gift was forthcoming rather than just never say anything and just attend the wedding. That way, no one would be wondering if your gift got lost in the mail, or wondered if you intended to be hostile. By “dispensation” I meant that the bride/groom would say, “Please don’t even worry about a gift! Just come to the wedding and enjoy yourself!” Because that is what any bride/groom with class would do.
However, a gift is standard if you are to attend a wedding. To do absolutely nothing is completely rude. If your friends did not even send a token gift upon being invited to your wedding, they are rude. Gifts aren’t obligatory, but neither are pleases and thank yous.
