I’m posting this question for my wife to get some opinions on saying the blessing before the meal at a wedding reception (I’m not sure if this is the 100% right forum, but I thought it would be a good place to start).

Our niece asked my wife to say the blessing before the meal at the reception. My wife was thinking of saying a few sentences about the couple, then saying the traditional grace before eating. The question is does anyone have any suggestions for a good segway from the personal statement to the formal prayer? i.e., concluding the personal stuff, then what before “Bless us, Oh Lord, and these thy gifts which we are about to receive from thy bounty, through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.”

Would the sign of the cross be made at the beginning, or in the middle before grace? Thanks in advance.

how about:

talk talk talk nice things about the couple
and now let us pray, in the name of The Fahter and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit. Bless us o Lord in…Amen

Our priest did the blessing before the meal at our wedding reception. He started off saying, “I’ve known these two since they were freshmen in college…” Then segued into “So let us pray for their happiness and for the blessings on all of us…” then continued on with the blessing of the meal.

She can start off with something like that. Hope it helps.

Personally, I think she should stick to just a prayer. She was asked to give a prayer, not talk personally about the couple.

Remember, toasts to the couple will be done by those the couple has chosen. You wouldn’t want your wife to inadvertently say something that was going to be in the toasts prepared by others, that would certainly be a spoiler.

At a minimum, she should make sure the bride/groom know of her plans-- they should have the final say.

Thanks everybody. Niece is open to either way, or both. That brought up the idea of a brief something about the couple, then grace, which brought up the segway. Thanks for the suggestions. God Bless Y’all.

Friends of mine did the “unity candle” at the reception as part of the blessing. It was so much more appropriate than at the Mass.
