I watched it while half-asleep due to the time zone (coverage began at 5 AM here) so I’m not too sure but it was in the middle of the ceremony, after the vows and before the homily I think, but I’m not sure. I heard the music and then saw the caption that it was by John Rutter.

here is a link to the music list but it doesn’t say exactly when the hymns were performed.

actually here is another article about the music with a link to the order of service that was scanned in. the print is hard for me to read but it looks like the John Rutter hymn is on p. 12, after the vows.

I had Holst’s “O God Beyond All Praising” instead as an instrumental procession.

I only watched highlights of the wedding on the BBC website, since i had no TV or Internet at home.

But I loved ‘I Was Glad’ as the processional! I got goosebumps the first time I heard it! I didn’t hear ‘Jersualem’, though-and I love that hymn as well!

I have both hymns on cassette tapes that I bought on several of my trips to England.

I love John Rutter’s music, too! I have several tapes of The Cambridge Singers, which he founded and still conducts.

I thought Catherine was lovely in her wedding gown! She looked every inch a Princess-or in this case, a Duchess, since her new title is ‘Duchess of Cambridge’!

She was beautiful. But I thought a touch too nervous, as was he. For all of Sarah Ferguson’s (Prince Andrew’s ex) faults, at least she knew how to look happy as a person should at their wedding!

And yes, there have been loads of comparisons to Princess Grace of Monaco all over the media, so no one has missed the similarity.

By the way, she IS officially Princess William of Wales as well as Duchess of Cambridge, just as William is officially Prince as well as Duke.

Mind you, much as I like the style it only properly works on very slender brides. On a more curvy gal it just wouldn’t look as good. Not that flattering and modest styles can’t be found for any size and shape, of course.

And I did love the lace, and the fact that it had sleeves (but one can’t imagine a royal ever wearing anything strapless or sleeveless - Princess Diana got in huge trouble early in her engagement for wearing a strapless black gown, I recall).

the gown is beautiful and very elegant and she looked comfortable in it which was great. I also really liked the sleeves.

The TV station we were watching had a note that the song had been commissioned for the occasion but didn’t give the name of the composer. I recognized Rutter’s style instantly. It did sound quite similar to his “For the Beauty of the Earth”. So I googled him and the information had already been added to his Wikipedia page.
 
the wedding music is available. it had said available by may 3rd but that must have been to give them some leeway. I had also seen several places that they wanted the music available within hours of the ceremony.

they don’t quite have the graphics worked out right on itunes b/c there are several albums with "royal wedding’ in the title and just typing that in won’t bring it up - at least not for me. it is called The Royal Wedding – The Official Album - and has a picture of them kissing on the cover. my initial view lists 3 songs but when you click on the picture the full album comes up, w/21 songs.

it includes a few spoken-word pieces, such as their vows and what is called ‘the lesson’ based on Romans 12. the sound quality is fantastic. the Rutter hymn and Jerusalem both sound really good.

it also includes an address that starts with a quote from st. Catherine of Sienna whose feast day is today.
 
I read that she had to wear a gown with sleeves due to the formality of the wedding. The men who weren’t wearing uniforms were wearing tails, and that’s the most formal of all, and bare arms are not supposed to be seen at that level I guess. I was surprised that none of the female guests wore floor length dresses, probably because of the time of the wedding, if it had been in the evening, they probably would have worn long dresses.
She looked wonderful as did her sister in her form fitting dress (not tight, it wasn’t pulling, just very form fitting.) Both girls look elegant. 🙂
And didn’t the “boys” look great, Harry is such a cutie and Prince William was just too cute! I don’t think that either Kate or William looked terribly nervous. Kate turned and gave one last wave to the crowd right before she entered the church.
Dianna would have been very proud of William and Kate!
 
I loved the new Duchess’ choice of gown. Not strapless, thankfully!

She looked classy and elegant in her gown. I know not all women can pull off the style as she is tall and slim but hopefully since many copy what she wears in every day life, more brides may go for a style she went for - gown not revealing cleavage, makeup tasteful (and she did it herself!), modest tiara, hair down as she said that wanted her fiance to recognize her, jewelry was not outlandish, and a beautiful veil.

I liked Diana’s gown but I was a bit young to remember her wedding day. But Diana’s gown screamed 1980’s with it being large and pouffy etc. But she did look great despite that.
 
So after all this talk I went to see that dress.
It was pretty, but I didn’t find it as pretty as I thought it would be. I didn’t like the design.

I post here a small youtubevideo of the Danish royal wedding some years ago. First you will see Crown Prince Frederick with huge tears of happiness in his eyes as he awaits his bride to be, Mary.
Her dress is much more nice than that of Kate, in my oppinion.

My sister got married in a strapless dress a few years ago. She looked stunning and very modest. I think strapless dresses can be very beautiful and I wouldn’t mind wearing one myself. It depends on the woman and the design, whether its immodest or not.

Sadly, Diana had no choice in her gown. It was chosen for her and I did not like it then or now. Kate’s dress was elegant and understated as are most of the clothes I have seen her in. And, unlike Diana, she was happy on her wedding day.
 
I’m a wedding planner and I can tell you that gowns with sleeves are coming back in. Most of them are still strapless, but it’s very, very common (and fashionable) to wear a bolero with it nowadays. Around here (Northern Colorado) it’s very easy to have sleeves put on a dress and all the bridal stores can do it because we have a large LDS population.
I wore a strapless dress for my afternoon wedding (not in the Church-- fixing that in June!) and I think it was modest. I used Audrey Hepburn as my style inspiration (specifically the dress she wore in Funny Face because it was so much like the dress my grandmother wore when she got married in the early 1950’s.)

I always LOVED Mary’s gown from the minute I saw it. When I was looking for my gown, I searched in vain for something similar. (Prince Frederick and Mary Donaldson married a year after me, so I never saw the video beforehand, obviously.) But I had a similar train. It was my mother’s train from her wedding gown. I’ll see if I can scan a pic of my mom’s gown, along with mine. I had wanted to wear hers, but I knew I couldn’t by the time I was 11. I was able to fit into the gown then. My mother was a size 0 when she got married.

Not all women can pull off a gown like Kate’s. I probably couldn’t have. Although Mary’s was my favorite gown from all the royal weddings I posted in an earlier post, I still loved Kate’s.

I thought Mary’s was a little too plain - needed either a necklace or some lace or embroidery or something at the neckline, to complement that gorgeous lace veil. But overall very lovely. I wouldn’t say it was better than Kate’s though - I’d put them about on a par.

Mind you, after about 20 years I’m sure most every bride looks back and thinks ‘what on earth possessed me to pick that’. Rather like me with my high school formal pictures.
 
kates dress was beautiful with out being overdone I do hope their marriage works out better than his mom and dads did I was 16 when his parents got married and i can remember my dad standing at the front door getting ready to go to work .My dad made a coment saying that the marriage would not work out and I said why daddy and he asked me if me and a friend had watched the interview with them the night before this was before you tube being able to tape it so that you could watch it later well anyway I said no that we were trying to keep my friends little brother out of our hair and my dad told me that they were asked if they loved each other and one of them answered whatever in love means or something like that my dad told me thenight before he married my mother someone asked him the same questionand my dad said that he answeres without a hesitation that yes he loved my mother and he continued loving her until the day he died

I will admit, as much of an Anglophile that I am, I actually did not follow any of the lead up to the royal wedding between Prince William and Princess Catherine. I was able to catch them on the balcony this morning and I thought that Princess Catherine looked breathtaking.

Thus this thread on wedding gowns. I’ve been married 7 1/2 years, but I still remember when looking for a gown it was incredibly difficult to find gowns that had any kind of sleeve. I finally found one with something that was like cap sleeves, but not quite. I’m now wondering, though, with the popularity of this royal wedding if there will be a trend to start seeing more gowns similar to the one worn by Princess Catherine. Any future brides… have you started to see a change in the styles or do you predict to see a change? And for fun, if you want to, post your favorite gowns.

As someone who’s in the fashion industry, I can tell you for a fact that designers are scrambling to create more conservative gowns. Look for them on the Fall runways. 😃

Wow - that just made me cry, seeing him so emotional, and their looks at each other. How sweet!
My sister got married in a strapless dress a few years ago. She looked stunning and very modest. I think strapless dresses can be very beautiful and I wouldn’t mind wearing one myself. It depends on the woman and the design, whether its immodest or not.

Do you consider Mary’s gown to be strapless? I would never call that a strapless gown, it simply has an open neckline.

This is strapless - and not what I would consider appropriate for a Catholic wedding:

Now don’t get me wrong, I think the gown is really beautiful, I just don’t think it is appropriate for Church. Now if she had on a lace bolero jacket or wrap, absolutely, and then strapless at an evening dinner reception - cool. But not in Church.

Of course Marys was not strapless.
My sisters was strapless. It was higher up than the one on your picture, rounding over. She said she never felt so dressed. She doesn’t have big chest so there was absolutely nothing vulra about it, everything was completely covered.
She had a long weil, and though transparent it covered her shoulders.
I would just cringe at anyone calling her immodest.
Anyhow, I also think it would be a cultural statement. Here neither the priest nor any one in the gathering found the dress immodest.

Yea Mary was so pretty, but she also had the right fugure for any dress. I think I would look like a square in that dress of hers:D
I found her lace veil beautiful… I wish that was more in the wedding fashion.
 
While Kate’s dress was nice, I still think she was showing too much cleavage, especially for a church wedding.
