Weird stuff you hear as a Catholic?

My (ha ha :eek:) favorites…we cannot pray to Jesus so that is why we have saints…and the good old “pope is the antichrist” ??? Still hard to believe it is 2016 and stuff like that is still thought.

How do you deal when things like that are said to you?

The ole Catholics can’t read the Bible without permission. LOL…I don’t know why. I just laugh an say it just isn’t so.

My boss, who is a Baptist, has told me that Catholicism is a cult and that Catholics aren’t saved.

I just make it a point to try and live my life in such a manner that he can see that Christ is at work in me. He has told me that he is starting to change his mind about Catholics because of me. Not that he’s ready to convert, or anything, but he’s more open to the idea that Catholics are Christians.

That’s funny because during the homily yesterday, our priest called Protestants “Cultic”

I cracked a smile because it was such a Punk Rock thing to hear from a priest today :cool:

I’m on a journey to be confirmed this coming Easter Vigil. I am 72 years old BTW.

About a month ago my daughter informed me that at least in her Church “a community church” she can pray tire fly to God???

My reply was reciting the Lords Prayer.

We did not discuss it further, but it still cut to the bone.
 
I just moved to the south. Some things I’ve heard: Mary is Ishtar from the Old Testament. That the Catholic Church is going to welcome alien overlords. That the Vatican is part of a space time conspiracy with some group in France connected the the Hindu goddess Kali.
That Catholics are not allowed to read the bible, and that we are in a cult, so we’re not allowed to read much else either… :roll_eyes:
 
I’m a student of theology and enjoy discussing it openly with most people. I’ve heard so many absurdities it’s hard to keep track. The worst is when (ex, former, uneducated, knowitall) Catholics themselves say absurd things about Catholicism. I always silently pray they haven’t imparted their “wisdom” to anyone else, and perpetuated the myths…

The bolded bit is true.

There will be ceremonies in the Bohemian Grove around a giant statue of Kali, Catholics along with the Masons and the Jews, with offerings of honeydew, casaba and cantaloupes for the goddess. The participants dance around the statue chanting…

…“have another melon, Kali, baby.”
 
My protestant mother believes that until Vatican 2 (or until the 60s as she put it), in all Catholic churches the Bible was chained to the pulpit so no one could read it. And of course, that’s why the Mass was in Latin, it was so no one could understand what was happening.

I used to go fairly regular to a confessor here in Carolina (now elsewhere in Carolina). His penance was usually to tell me to read a Bible verse. So when I here things like “Catholics don’t read the Bible” I bring that very fact up. And Fr. Emmanuel told us to read the Bible in his Homily yesterday! I guess I have “permission”

Type in your favourite search engine “Fulton Sheen, Melkite Divine Liturgy”, was not in Latin, before Vatican II:D

Yep, ex girlfriend of mine (who actually does know better) perpetuates those myths.

A lot of times when I pray, I say “through” or “in” Jesus’s name. So confused by that one.

She’s partly right, although I think it stopped long before Vatican II. There was a time where the Bible was chained down- due to the high cost of making Bibles back when they had to be hand copied, hand illuminated or even when each page had to be type set after printing began.

And there was a time where many Catholics could not read, and that is why we have stained glass that depicts Biblical scenes and is partly why we have Mass readings every week. The Bible had to be read to the people because they could not read it for themselves. It wasn’t a matter of controlling the people, it was a practical solution to the abject poverty and lack of education of the people. Bear in mind that it was Catholics that started many schools for the poor and it was Catholics who devised how to mass produce the Bible, so obviously the Church wasn’t trying to stop people from reading the Bible.

Nowadays, of course, Bibles are abundant and the laity largely literate and we are encouraged to read the Bible.
 
The usual…the Church is a cult, you are all brainwashed, ect. I like the one where they say the Church only wants your money. That’s when I tell them that you don’t have to give them a penny if you do not want to. I never get a good response. I think they think the Church has access to your bank account and can withdraw money anytime they choose or you will not be allowed into the Church if you haven’t paid your “toll”…🤷
 
I was told that I have to pay the priest to forgive my sins. When I told him he was wrong, that I go to confession every 6 weeks or so and have NEVER paid a dime to be absolved, he continued to tell me how wrong I am.

LOL, Ive heard the Vatican waiting/ looking for alien overlords quite a few times (by many different people too), I think their involvement in the LUCIFER telescope thing, and some misunderstandings of statements from guys like Balducci, Cosmangalo, etc have furthered this belief.

I also hear a lot about that old quote, not sure who said it off the top of my head, “this religion thing has been good to us”, (something like that??), it was implying christianity was put in place to benefit an elect few
