A friend of a friend has expressed that she will seek counseling from a group who claims they can cure all types of physical and spiritual illnesses. They are called Wellspring Ministries led by a man named Dr Art Mathias.

Does anyone know anything about this group?

From what I have heard, it’s a very me-centered approach to overcoming illness. The idea is that when we figure out where we are sinning or lacking faith, we take steps to “allow God to bless us.” He wants to bless us and heal us but cannot until we “let him.” What we put in determines what we receive. God is basically bound and we are basically free; we must free Him to heal or bless us. It’s a form of the New Age Positive Confession model, except that instead of speaking words to change our destiny, our thoughts and attitudes determine our fate. “Thoughts become things,” they say; in this case, those things are physical and mental healings.

While I don’t want to attack anybody’s “ministry” without more information, I would be concerned for your friend. These sorts of organizations sell lots of expensive DVDs, CDs, books, and lectures that contain little more than self-worship, brainwashing, and empty promises.

Oh my! She is coming from a background of a fallen away Latin Catholic who has delved into all types of new age cult-like organizations in an effort to heal her many illnesses. Wellspring is telling her that she has to leave behind all of her new age and cultish practices in order for them to help her—yet you are saying that they are similar to a new age group.

Lord have mercy!

I want to be careful not to say too much until I know more, but after looking at their site, it reminds me of some of the more fringe/extreme Televangelist “healing programs.” They do indeed draw upon weird, New Age techniques such as The Secret, Positive Confession, and so forth…this group’s site uses some of the same lingo. I’d at least warn her to be cautious. They may be sincerely nice people, or perhaps not; but “we must do X to allow God to do Y, so pay us to tell you what X and Y are” is certainly a step down a scary road.

I thought the exact thing upon review of their site!

It will be difficult to get her to listen. She wouldn’t listen when warned of all the countless new age voodoo things she has already experienced. I feel bad for her. She has spent thousands and thousands of dollars in her desparation. 😦

My wife and I have been telling her to go to confession for the five years now—and she will not listen.

Oh wow. I’ll definitely pray for her, and I’ll pray that her friends will give her godly counsel. And I’m not just saying that either; I’ve seen this exact same situation happen to a close relative, so it still hits home. These are always difficult, because you feel so bad for the person who needs healing, and it’s hard to show “tough love” to someone who is suffering…but you also don’t want them falling for scam artists or bogus programs that leave them worse off than before. 😦 Praying for y’all.

Yeah…poor thing…it only seems to get worse for her. Thanks for your prayers.

if it were my friend my first question would be how much money are they charging you

you might want to ask her if she has abandoned her faith in Jesus Christ and His Church, why she is so willing to place faith in human beings? depending on what terms you are with, and how receptive she would be. If she really is hurting and in pain she might have clouded judgement.

Yeah…she says that she will look into going back to the Catholic Church, but then she just gets carried off to another voodoo paracticioner. But these people say they are true Christians willing to help her–for a fee.

She is always penniless–and will not listen to us. 😦

I’m with you my friend! It’s very cultish, as I see.
