Thank you, everyone, for your advice and opinions. I am very torn. If I can’t trust my priest on this issue - can I trust him at all? Was my confession valid? How can I have respect and reverence for him as our pastor if I am to disregard his sincere advice and counsel? What if God placed this priest in my life for a reason? On the other hand, I did read HV, and it appears to me (and again, I am NOT a theologian so this is just a layperson’s opinion) that there is no exception to the “no contraception” rule, even in the face is almost certain death on the part of the woman.

I guess I’m just going to have to pray about this and seek a second opinion. So frustrating 😦

Your confession is valid presuming that your priest is ordained. Not following someone’s advice does not constitute disrespect.

Are you going to believe an ordained Roman Catholic priest or are you going to believe someone about whom you know absolutely NOTHING posting anonymously on an internet forum?

Your situation is far too serious for the latter.
+1

I’m sure God did place the priest in your life for a reason… but also vice versa!!! You seem to have a sensitive conscience and, for once, God decided not to allow this priest to go on giving this bad advice. You might need to make a short private appointment with your bishop - this kind of thing can’t go on anymore.

Even though your priest appears compassionate, he could be causing others to commit mortal sins both objectively and subjectively. Objectively, because the matter is serious and is a clear teaching of the Church. Subjectively, because some are ignorant of that fact (which is hard to believe because it is even in the secular press all the time) but have sensitive consciences like yourself. They may follow the priest’s advice half-heartedly, thereby actually going against their conscience, thereby commiting sin.

I agree with you that prayer is the answer. Is your husband a Catholic? Both of you need to pray. It seems that everything is falling on you alone. I will pray for you (as I’m sure the others will) that your husband’s heart will be touched, and that he will consider your true and ultimate good, and that your health will remain good no matter what. God bless you! And don’t be afraid! God is with you.

Oh, I’m not asking for our advice to be taken blindly. I’m glad that Katharine has read HV and tested the internal logic of her priest’s advice. Now perhaps she needs to go back to her priest with this new information.

Even if you use ABC in any form, there are failures. I have known failures from pills, IUDs, foam, condoms, tubal ligation, and vasectomy among friends and including myself. Then if/when that happens, you will be told, “Well, you know, in this case I think abortion would be justified.”
