I’ve known this for several months, but can finally speak openly about it.

By the Grace of God and generosity of donors, we’re opening a grammar school at our tiny parish.

With Basilian sisters.

It seems that with the closing of schools and parishes, there were a handful Of sisters left with nothing to do.

They approached Father, and he had some donors eager to jump in . . .

The next property over will be leased for us by the donors for the first couple of years, and we’ll have an option to buy. Until a couple of weeks ago, we were looking at fall next year, but today Father was talking about the builiding being gutted over the next two months!

We were initially gong to convert part of the upstairs as a convent, but +Gerald upped the ante, and now we’re gong to have a mother house! ( which also means more sisters). the next property over is already a five bedroom on a massive lot; now it’s joining the mix, too.

The RC bishop is in support of this too–a necessity, as there aren’t close to enough easterns in town to fill the school.

A new church will be part of the building spree, as will a actual hall ( at the moment, our church is converted from an oversized three car garage, while our hall is the house that came with it . . .

And with Father here all the time, instead of spending much time at an RC parish, we’ll have daily Divine Liturgy (a necessity for the sisters to come).

And how e ball got in motion: someone was seeking a priest to come pray with his ill mother, and none woul come. When Father was asked, he simply went . . .

You mean a Catholic school with actual bonafide religious sisters?! Praise God! 👍

dochawk - we pray for the success of this endeavor and for the blessed sister who will be serving this noble cause.

As you likely know, there was a time in country where Byzantine Catholic schools educated children by the thousands each year. There are far too few remaining, unfortunately.

Please keep us posted on the developments!

The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist started with a grammar school and now have K-12.

You bet they are alway seen in habits! And smiling!

God bless all who promote Catholic education! Praying for you all!

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! This is WONDERFUL! God Bless, you have my prayers!

Slowly, proper schooling is returning.

It’s so good to know, especially as a soon-to be baptized catholic, that tradition is making a come-back - the whole “sweater nuns” thing has to stop. If I were a religious, I would wear my habit proudly!

Wonderful!!! May God bless your endeavor abundantly!!!

If it makes the local papers, please post links!!!

Glory to God for all things!
How wonderful are our priests?!

This is so wonderful 😃 I love the Divine Liturgy and think that this will be great!

So encouraging to hear, especially during these times.I will pray for the success of your sisters and the school.

That’s simply great ! Congratulations !

I am curious , why was your priest spending so much time at the RC parish ?

When he was ordained, we had a borrowed Franciscan priest, so the plan was for him to assist at both of our eparchies parishes here while getting his feet wet, and he signed a part-time contract with the RC diocese, too. Then Fr. Nils got pulled very suddenly by his order due to his health, and poor Father was overworked. (Fr. Nils had been asking to retire, but after a stroke, the parish took such good care of him that his order told him to stay put, where we co UD tnd to him :))

Anyway, the involvement with the larger RC parish, as well as the Shrine and another large RC parish, has resulted in many good things for our parish, including parishioners and support.

(There should be something like 99 RC parishes in the Las Vegas Valley, but the are 17 [and another on the way next to the new high school {unfortunately, the old one was sold to the county to pay for costs; we need at least two more of those, too}]. They just don’t have enough priests, and it really helps tiny parishes when the RC pick up a priest’s salary. The other parish’s pastor was actually the chancellor or vicar or some such for the RC until recently)

We re very excited, and thank you for the prayers. I’ll certainly post the links when they happen.

I agree with Dochawk… The two previous pastors at his church were elderly and not in good health. Their new pastor has given his church a much needed shot in the arm. He is also correct in his comments of involvement with the RC. The Eparchy is not financially well off. Recently there was a special collection to help pay for health care for its priests. Our pastor is also paid by the RC. This cooperation is healthy for both the Byzantines and the Romans. The Romans don’t have enough priests and the small Byzantine congregations are hard pressed to fully support their churches.

That’s wonderful!

Sadly, the Byzantine Catholic school where I had CCD classes closed a couple of years ago due to lack of enrollment. 😦

Great news about the school! It takes me back to my youth. I hope these sisters get the support they need. I know I took our teaching sisters for granted back in the old days (and now they’re gone).

I was thinking of you on Friday when we were at Holy Virgin and the kids from Saint John of SF Orthodox Academy came in to pray their end of the day prayers at the relics of St. John. Not a lot of kids but apparently the Orthodox think it’s worth it, and they are right!

(At the end of their prayers they each got anointed, as did the rest of us. :))

I’m a bit surprised by the plaid for an Orthodox school. 🙂

As an update for ours . . . 7-10 Vasilian sisters will be coming out altogether, with 5 coming for the school, four of whom will be in the classroom. Initially, they will use the 5 bedroom house as a convent, and we’ll rent a house nearby, since they won’t all fit (what a problem to have–too many sisters!). We’ll then build the actual motherhouse behind it (it’s a 2 acre lot), and presidium ably demolish the house.

When he offered Mass at the shrine this morning, he was approached afterwards with an offer of help with the permits when the time comes–by a county commissioner!

Building permits we’re issued a couple of weeks ago, and this last week, we started construction.

I suppose “broken ground” is the wrong term, given that the building was already there . . .

Thanks for the update, hawk!

Will all be set and ready for the 2012/2013 school year?
