I just found out about this a fiew minutes ago. Protesters from the notorious Westboro Baptist Church picketed St. Laurence Catholic Church yesterday at around noon. St. Laurence isn’t very far from where I live.

Here are some YouTube videos of yesterday’s counterprotest.

I wish I could have been there! If I would have known they were going to be there, I would have went to the noon Mass there, instead of my usual trip to St. Martin’s. After the Mass, I would have led the crowd of counterprotesters in singing such classics as “Salve Regina,” “O Sacrament Most Holy,” “Tantum Ergo,” “Panis Angelicus,” and any other ones they would have wanted to sing.

really wish folks would just stop giving them attention…just stop protesting their protest…it’s like feeding them more and more…

hope this thread doesn’t get closed, seems like anything about WBC has been closed lately

We shouldn’t really give any attention to The Westboro Baptist Church, other than to pray for them.

I hope Catholics were not the ones making some of those signs!

“drink the kool aid already”

"eat Gods heart"or something, I couldn’t make myself read it all :signofcross:

see…the protestors who are protesting them are no better…

Please remember that I’m visually impaired, so if there was anything offensive in any of those videos, please forgive me, I couldn’t see it.

I haven’t been keeping track of very many of the other WBC threds here lately, so I didn’t know that they were being closed.

I think this group is just starting to bring out the worse in everyone. There are some good signs, etc, but some of the signs were bad.

It may be time for some Bishops to start saying something about these folks. Does anyone know if they have? Since WBC is also targeting Catholic churches, it doesn’t look good to have opposing protestors acting this way in front of our churches.

We need to ignore them. Really. Shut them down, give them no coverage media outlet.

T … I don’t really know why so many threads have been closed on them.

The WBC is a hate filled malicious group, whose only goal seems to be causing anarchy. I’m surprised some military member hasn’t taken care of them already. Protesting at military funerals cannot be good for your health. If a church official were to talk to them it would only give their movement validity.

My thought is that we should pray for them, but we should ignore them on the street.

I have not hit their site for some time, but they posted a protest schedule then and likely do so now. You can see if they are coming to a parish near you.

Although I usually don’t pay much attention to the WBC, I have been keeping an eye on such threads lately because of the recent Supreme Court decision. I haven’t noticed threads getting locked - looking back to February 1 in the World News forum, I only see one thread about WBC that was locked, and that may have been due to a mismatched title. There may be other WBC threads that were sent down the memory hole; obviously I can’t check on them. Finally, some duplicate threads were merged into this one:
Justices Rule for Protesters at Military Funerals

One of the problems frequently seen in WBC threads is that otherwise perfectly polite posters are unable to refrain from name-calling. Sometimes this is acted on, sometimes not. Regardless, it’s to the credit of those on this thread that it hasn’t happened yet here.

The counter-protestors appear to be pro-gay, not pro-Catholic.

Where does the money come from to transport this group from place to place? I doubt that any of them could hold a position which generates that level of income to support the cult.

Lawsuits. They rake in their money by it. When you have 9 lawyers in that family, you get a lot of ambulance chasers!

Exactly, they aren’t a cult, they’re a family. The father, Felps, has 12 kids. Four are estranged, the rest, kids and grandkids, are lawyers, married to lawyers or have children becoming lawyers. I think the current number is around 100 politically active overall. They are ALL related to eachother by typical means.

Their goal, accoding to a spokesperson who was interviewed by NPR, is to lock the gates of heaven by harden the hearts of people against having faith. They believe that it is their duty to protect heaven from all the “ordinary” sinners.

I think we should go out of our way to show them love and compassion, and remind them that God’s love is infinite. I sincerely doubt that it would make much difference, but Christ commands us at least to try.

It would be nice never again to see Westboro Baptist in the news, but the media just love it. Look at them as a challenge that we Christians must face out of our love for God and His Word.

Is that right??? I’ve heard them speak, the daughter in particular, and surmised that the sum of the group’s IQ was approaching the low teens.

I really want to feel love and compassion for WBC, as Jesus teaches us to love our enemies, but I cannot help but feel like these people are the work of the devil. They have done a wonderful job of making Christ and people who truely love him look bad to alot of the secular world because all people see of these so-called “Christians” on their tellies are them talking about God - our most loving Father! - on one hand then talking about hate and spouting their nasty bigotry on the other and some secularists have the misfortune to look and them and think they’re an example of Christianity, which they most certainly are not.

Hardly. That one daughter just won her case that she argued before the Supreme Court. Fred and his son ran the Kansas campaign for Al Gore in 1992.

These people have been doing this for years. In 1999 they showed up at our rural church in NE Kansas to “protest” first communion. They called the sheriff before arriving to make sure they had protection before unfurling their signs. The Sheriff showed up and told them to leave and advised them that cell phones didn’t work in that part of the county. If they ran into any “problems” they were on their own because he had other things to do besides act as their security and there was no way for anyone to report a disturbance - if one happened. They left with the sheriff.

These people protest everything. They show up at nearly every event at the Topeka Expo Center and harass people as they enter - for some reason the stay away from the gun shows though.

they were supposed to show up at a local mans funeral that had been killed in Iraq, but before they arrived, a motorcycle gang showed up at the funeral home, with large American flags on their bikes, and circled the funeral home…The Westboro bunch never showed for some reason…Maybe the have a little common sense after all…I’ll always wonder what would have happened…
