Look at their coming schedule… They plan on picketing in DC and NY while the pope is here…

It’s a small church in Kansas that I am sure everyone has heard of in the country of the USA, but out here in Australia we don’t hear a lot about it. I heard about them picketing a fallen soldier’s funeral at some point last yr, but even more recent was a press release they made claiming that Heath Ledger was burning in hell and that they would be picketing his funeral. I went to their website and read their claims, and one of their sites is called priestsrapeboys.com and basically according to them, we all as Catholics are going to hell because we are enabling “filth” … I was quite shocked.

Maybe I’m sheltered, but how can people like this call themselves Christians??

The same way as any other Christian - by redefining bigotry as “zeal for the truth”, brutal callousness as “tough love”, hatred as “intolerance of sin” & “obedience to the Will of God”. Phelps will have plenty of admirers.​

Christianity has sanctified these wicked attitudes for many centuries - it has been all too successful at re-defining the Love of Christ. From one POV, Phelps is as much a victim as those he hates so much - he’s a victim of that re-definition. He didn’t start it; it’s something he’s received from others. Had he lived in another time & place, he would have been hailed as a godly fighter against an unspeakable crime; it’s his misfortune to live when and where he does.

He can at least not enforce his will on an entire state. He can at least be sued. Unlike some Christians, who have had more power, to do much more harm, with complete legal impunity. That doesn’t make his site any less revolting - but it does put matters in perspective.

I think they might fit in fine in Antarctica!!! Wonder if the Westboro Police Department would stop people from kidnapping them and throwing them on a plane!! 😃 Just kidding

They try that with The Pope, New York is going to unpleasantly surprise them.

There’s going to be a ton of Ear Cutting Peters ready for them.

Tell me about it. We Catholics need the same type of disclaimer sometimes. I do not think anyone believes him to be anything like a typical Baptist. I know if I ever went to Church there, I would stay away from the kool-aid.
 
Update. They did show up at the memorial service, but oh boy they sure didn’t get anywhere. They were surrounded by so many people they could not be seen or heard. They finally gave up and left the area.
(This was in Reno, NV at St. Rose DeLima Church.)

Do not be surprised, these are the fruits of ‘personal testimony of the Holy Spirit’ and personal interpretation of Scripture.

Our non-Catholic friends don’t get this, but look at the development of cults post-Reformation and it is easy to see the extent and breadth of the problem.

Every idiot who thinks the Bible ‘talks’ to him starts a ‘church’ and focuses on a) sex with children, b) sex with others’ wives, c) end times a-comin’, d) ‘pie in the sky by and by gospel of wealth,’ e) hatred for people of various ethnicity, sexuality, political views.

And all of these ‘bible thumpers’ are infallible interpreters of what God wants ‘Christians’ to do and believe.

No thanks, I’ll stay Catholic.

Of course, Protestants will call those you just described as “not” being Protestants.
 
And that is truly, truly sad and unfortunate.

All around them, ‘protestants’ of every polka dot and stripe and tie-dye are claiming ‘infallibility of doctrine’ and ‘personal revelation,’ but when asked by us Catholic types about the hypocrisy of those views, we get, “Well, they’re not really Protestants.”

Of course, when asked what a Protestant might be, the hemming and hawing starts.
