How is Western Rite Orthodoxy different than Eastern ?
they use either an edited Anglican High Mass or our own TLM, with the Filioque removed from the creed

the TLM may also be said in the vernacular

And with the artificial addition of an explicit epiklesis.

Albeit that I’m an Oriental, lots of things about the so-called “Western Rite Orthodox” bother me. But I’m not in the mood to go into a laundry list.

Does a Western Rite Orthodox Church look exactly like an Eastern one ? No statues right.

What do you all think of Western Rite Orthodoxy. Just curious.

I think it was born out of necessity.

I think that ideally these people should be Roman rite Catholics, but it is not possible at this point in time.

So the bishops of the Orthodox church have consented to care for them until such time as they can be reunited with their mother church. Let’s all pray for Christian unity.

They were at least initially Anglicans/Episcopalians. I don’t believe they will ever become Catholic. Most made their choice to be Western Orthodox to avoid being subject to the Papacy.

The really don’t like the idea of authority and I believe, feel that being Orthodox there is no more authority than they had as former Anglicans/Episcopalians. Many also didn’t accept some of the Marian doctrines, but if they are being honest the Orthodox accept the same doctrines, but don’t define the time in which the BVM was made immaculate.

I have no idea what type of authority they must submit to as Orthodox. I have attended two different Western Orthodox parishes and the priests and members spoke to me in the same terms that I knew as a former Episcopalian. They were both very small parishes.

I’ve read about Western Rite Orthodoxy, and basically it’s not very similar to Latin Rite Catholicism. Basically, yeah, they only use icons. Sometimes they even have an iconostasis, something completely foreign to Latins. Many times they don’t even use Western vestments. I’ve never seen them using Latin or anything like that. Western Rite Orthodoxy also has literally no continuity in terms of liturgy. It’s pretty much an invention ex nihilo. You don’t just create rites. All rites of the Catholic Church go directly back to roots in the early Church or are variations of current rites. Not so with Western Rite Orthodoxy. Also, it’s kind of ironic that the Orthodox have a dislike for uniates, and yet they just do the same thing in reverse.

Rood screens are very ancient. We discouraged their use at Trent because we wanted people to be able to see what was going on at the altar.

However, just having a rail, as far as I know, is more ancient.

Where in the world did you get your info from?

The various liturgies used in the Western Rite are adaptations of either the Book of Common Prayer, the Tridentine Mass or the Sarum Rite. All of those are “variations” of Roman rite liturgies. 🤷

I always thought rood screens were distinct from iconostases in their origins. I’m quite fallible though.

I know that the liturgies themselves are based off of the liturgies of other denominations, but it seems they are not consistent with Orthodox liturgical patrimony. I always though that for liturgical practice to be legitimate it must be part of a continually living tradition. From the Orthodox perspective at least, Western Rite is not one of those continually living traditions, since its Orthodoxy ceased after 1054 AD, presenting us with an 800-900 year gap. Not only that, Western Rite isn’t even it’s own Church. It’s an extension of the Russian and Antiochian Orthodox Churches. With the Eastern Catholics, their rites correspond to their correct Churches. There is no Byzantine Rite in the Latin Church. However, as an Orthodox you’re probably better at understanding Orthodoxy than I am. 😛

All of the liturgies in question are descended from liturgies in use at the time of the Schism. They have complete continuity. It really is no different from Rome allowing returning Anglicans to have an Anglican Use. 🙂
