But then I took a closer look at the banner for the event (above). And I noticed that Pope Benedict XVI had been placed in the company of some of the most hate-filled people on the planet. Indeed, he’s right next to “Pastor” Fred Phelps, a revolting American bigot whose slogans include “God hates fags” and “Priests rape boys”.
This event, whose publicity material grossly defames the Holy Father, is being publicised by the Soho Masses Pastoral Council (an official ministry of the Diocese of Westminster) on its website. And Pendergast is not a lone maverick: he has close connections to the Magic Circle and is very highly regarded in Eccleston Square.
The Pope is not the only person defamed by this banner: pictured to his left, unless my eyes deceive me, is the Rev Nicky Gumbel, Vicar of Holy Trinity, Brompton. He’s certainly not liberal on homosexuality, but he’s not a bigot. I seem to recall that he’s a barrister as well as an Anglican minister: perhaps he might want to consult his lawyers.
