Hi,Ah, finally a Protestant view!!!Thanks for responding, rr1213!
But how can you refute the plainly-put language of James 2:24 & 26? Youāre trying to tell me something āround aboutā when James spells it out in black and white.
24
See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
26
For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
I think RR summed it up nicely. It is a difficult concept to believe or even understand especially if you have believed another way your whole life. Ill take another shot but similar.
āFaithā in this verse, is not used in the sense of genuine saving faith, rather it is demonic(v.19)useless(v.20)and dead(v.26). It is a mere intellectual acceptance of certain truths without actual real trust in Christ as Savior. James is also not saying that a person is saved by works and not by genuine faith. Rather, he is saying, to use Martin Lutherās words, that people are justified(declared righteous before God)by faith alone, but not by a faith that is alone. Another words, genuine faith WILL produce good deeds, but only faith in Christ saves⦠The bible verses that RR put up also go along with what I just said.
There is a verse(I cant remember where) that says we will know who is in Christ by their fruits(works). We can only know them by their fruits, but they are already in Christ. God saved us for good works. WE ALL KNOW Ephesians 8-10āwhich actually sums it up quite nice.
**2:8
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithāand this not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godā
2:9
not by works, so that no one can boast.
2:10
For we are Godās workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ** I just dont see how anyone could misintrepret these verses. Because God does not contradict Himself then the only explanation for James or any other verse that talks about works would have to be after you have believed and been saved. **Before anyone starts saying that us who believe in faith alone dont believe we have to do any works:Yes we are commanded to do good works just like it says in Ephesians 10 and so we do good works for the Glory of God and not for our glory.
