I was actually going to post this on reddit, but I thought to myself, why not here? (First time using this website).
Anyways, I’m a 22 yr old, white hispanic. I grew up in a very catholic home, and I myself am still a catholic. It’s also my last year of university, I’m majoring in Business Economics and business law. Anyhow, I took a course of philosophy with an ex catholic, and now he’s an atheist, I really disliked his opinions and the way he kept attacking Christianity, but that only made me want to reinforce my beliefs. Only problem is, I never knew how little I knew about Catholicisms’ origins. Anyways, I’m getting out of topic. I just want to know what’s the point of living? All we do is eat, sleep, excrement, etc. I asked my best friend about this, and she told me I’m smart enough to know and should reread genesis. However I’m not satisfied with the answer. There has to be something more. Anyways, ever since I was a kid I’ve always thought about death, and as a kid I was scared of the very thought, but now that I’m older. I actually find the idea very satisfying. I mean, no more pain, no more hurting, no more sorrow? (I’m thinking of joining the marines or navy just after I graduate, maybe for the thrill? Or sense of death, I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but also to fight for this country (America, obviously) and perhaps someday become a politician that will represent Catholics (last one was JFK, and they assassinated him 😦 ) Although, there’s always the trial between whether you’ll be sent to heaven or hell. Anyways, I’m not sucidial, I just think about stuff a lot. I don’t think I can relate to people of my age. My friends are out there having sex 24/7 and I for one haven’t tried it. (I’ll end playing video games, or chess, or reading my Bible, or running / long walks) Don’t get wrong, it’s not like I can’t (or that I’m ugly; I’m 6’2’’ ft, in good shape, pretty smart, pretty handsome, so I’ve been told all my life, white, not trying to play the race card, but yeah, I know a lot of women that say just being white is a plus. And I think I have a pretty good personality”. Of course, I’m a man, and I would love sex, (I’ve had the opportunity to even have sex with two girls at the same time, but I refused). I respect myself and would like to be “pure” for marriage. Anyways, it’s a long rant / unnecessary story,( I don’t even know what this is anymore lol), but I’d like an answer for this. I’d also like to know, what good is a pope for?
And I’d also like question catholic dating. I rarely find any women that are catholic anymore. And I mean young women like my age. It’s troublesome, really where do I find any? I go to different churches and they’re all filled with elderly people.

First, the purpose of living is to get to Heaven. This is all temporary, but Heaven is forever. So is Hell, so your Earthly life will determine your eternal destination. We live in order to please God and follow His Law. Help the poor, sick, and elderly. Second, bravo to you for avoiding sex. Don’t be envious or sad you aren’t having sex. In reality, what you are doing is REALLY SMART! Saving sex until marriage is called chastity, a virtue. Having no pre-marital sex is good since you are following God’s law and will make marriage even better. In sum, get to Heaven, please God, help and love all, and don’t let the culture of death and sex get to you. God bless!

Another point of living is to live out your calling and vocations. What are you called to do today? Think about that each day. And think about your vocation: Marriage? Priesthood? Religious Life? Single? That’s another point of living.

By the way, suicide is a sin. So killing yourself would lead you to Hell. God doesn’t want you to kill yourself. Please call a suicide hotline if this is still an issue.

Anyways, I’m getting out of topic. I just want to know what’s the point of living?
The point of living in this world is only to earn your way out of it, so that you may move on to much greener pastures – for indeed, this world isn’t exactly a whole lot of fun.

The point of living in general (i.e. in a better Afterworld) is that it’s just sheer bliss.
I actually find the idea very satisfying. I mean, no more pain, no more hurting, no more sorrow?
You assume that death will be the end of you. It won’t be. You will move on to more purposeful suffering (Purgatory), great bliss (Heaven), or terrible torture (Hell).
I know a lot of women that say just being white is a plus.
I know a lot of women who say it’s a minus 😉
I rarely find any women that are catholic anymore. And I mean young women like my age. It’s troublesome, really where do I find any?
At Catholic churches, obviously, or on a Catholic dating website if that’s your thing. If you want to be in an environment where the vast majority are Catholic, move to Latin America or the Phillippines.

No, suicide is an grave sin. And if you mean get help with a psychologist / psychiatrist, then no thanks. That’s all BS / rubberish. Same title as a pastor / priest, but without the church and with drugs.
And if you say it’s all a test to get to heaven, then that leads me towards my next question, which even my priest / professors couldn’t answer.
If God knows everything about us before we’re even born, and knows every aspect of our future, and what we will do, then why doesn’t God just skip the earth part and send us directly to heaven or hell, if he knows the outcome will always be the same? I’m not questioning God’s authority, however I do ponder for what purpose this is. I see many people like yourself repeat the same thing.

That would be a good question for a more educated apologist or theologian.

Wow, I never really thought of this. Lol
Argentina, here I come!

I’m so happy to hear that despite being in college/university you are still Catholic! I am also super happy that you have decided to remain chaste. It is the best gift you can give a future spouse!

You asked “What is the point of all this?” God has given us life because He wanted to share His creation with others. He gave us Free Will so we could CHOOSE to Love Him or Not! He desires our love but can NOT force us to love him as otherwise it would NOT be true love. IF we did NOT have Free Will then we would just be robots and then our Lord would NOT have the joy of our choosing to love him. He has freely given us an opportunity to be in relationship with Him!

We have also been given an opportunity to be Christ to others! This is NOT to say we are divine beings but rather we have the opportunity to show Christ to others through our words and actions. I encourage you to spend time with our Lord every day! He is wherever you are! You might however choose to spend time with Him at church/chapel so that you are not distracted by tv’s, radio’s, computer’s, telephone’s etc. Prayer in case you are wondering is telling our Lord about what your plan’s are for the day and what your concerns are and a time to ask him how to respond to whatever situation you see yourself having to deal with. You then need to sit in quite contemplation listening to what our Lord wants for you. You won’t hear an actual voice but maybe a scripture passage will come to you that has to do with what you are dealing with or you might have a thought come to you that is not coming directly from you. In regard finding a church with young adults: Does your college have a Newman’s Club a/k/a Newman Center’s? If not maybe you could call the diocese where your university is and ask them what Catholic Church has a strong Young Adult ministry for college students! If there are any Oblate’s of the Virgin Mary (OMV) priests and brother’s near you, you may want to check out the churches they run, as they have a very strong young adult ministry!

To know, love and serve God in this world, and to be happy with Him in the next.

Psychology is not entirely BS.

Remember you have body, mind and soul. You need to look after all three.

St Pio said that this world is a spiritual training ground. And I keep saying that we’re using live ammo! So take care.

Jesus promised us that if we are good we will live life, and to the full. I believe every word He said because He was God incarnate. Well! What a great mission we have, to develop our souls and Live.
God bless.

You’re kind of all over the map here. If you’re asking what the purpose of life is, it’s to prepare yourself for union with God. How each person does that is going to vary from individual to individual.

If I could give you some advice, it would be to focus your thinking a bit. Instead of planning on being the next JFK, focus more on your immediate plans. You say you’re in your last year of college. What are you going to do afterward? If you want to join the military, that’s fine, but now is the time to start doing serious research.

The question why one should live in this world is basically the one which will and should sooner or later arise in the mind of atheists because they don’t find any noble purpose other than doing good,to be kind and helpful to others etc which would appear to them to be not that much worth considering the sufferings and trials they have to undergo in this world.
But for Christians, the purpose of living here is absolutely made clear. That is, to know about God,adore him and to join in everlasting glorious life with him after our death .Though ours is a short temporary stop over here, this life is a precious, once for all, rare opportunity to know about our creator, love each other and to live the way Jesus told us to live. How thankful and obliged should we be for allowing us to take birth in this beautiful world and to witness the wonders of God! As one song says- The entire life period here is not sufficient to express our thanks to God.
So be confident.Live the full life here as pleasing toJesus. He has promised us eternal life…

If you think of it this way; God could do what you say, send us straight to heaven or hell because he already knows our future. But the thing is, we don’t know our future and where we’ll end up. What purpose would it serve us to be put in one place or another if we never knew the “why” of where we end up. So we live in time in order to work things out here and know and love God first, and our neighbor. We live in time because we became separated from God from the beginning (Adam & Eve) Genesis. Ultimately we are all on a journey here that hopefully leads us back to God in the end. He gave us the gift of time when we first sinned against him. Not an easy road either.

Hello.

You warm my heart. Please keep searching, because I’m sure you know “seek and you shall find…”

Please call the suicide hotline if you are thinking of hurting yourself. Have you considered going into counseling?

Also, do you have a Newman Center? Have you looked up to see if there’s a FOCUS group in your area? I think it’s for young Catholics of your age…

Also, have you explored the Chastity section of this website?

Also, have you read anything by Father Larry Richards?

Just some random ideas for you.

Very glad you posted. Please let us know how things go with you.

Go to www.catholicmatch.com
There are LOADS of americans on that website that are single young 100% devoted catholics.
(It is the number one Catholic Dating website in the USA).

And sir, keep on the straight and narrow! Well done Good and Faithful servant!

Why life? God saw all that He created and saw that it was GOOD. Your mission on earth is to be Jesus eyes,
Ears, feet, hands, words, in the world to all those around you, and that is an important mission. Whether Jesus has you doing chores today at home, or speaking to millions on Tv, both tasks save souls if done for Jesus. Your mission is to love God and love your neighbour, (meaning: save your soul,’and through good example; the souls of others too). You never know how many of your acquaintances at their death bed may remember your example and repent at the last moment and at least earn the lowest point in Heaven, while you yourself may hopefully reach the highest point in heaven.

I think it was Saint Francis of Assissi or Mother Theresa that wrote: ‘You may be the only gospel/ sermon that people ever see.’ (For those who never attend church).

Don’t think: what’s the point in this or that.
Do think: EVERYTHING I do today is important, each act done with love of Jesus is reparation for sins of mankind in those situations elsewhere in the world.

Saint Paul wrote in the Bible: ‘whether you eat or drink or fast, whatever you do, do for God’s glory.’

Even your running/ walking/ computer games, these are healthy hobbies compared to those who drink excessively/ do drugs/ cohabitate, Your healthy hobbies are reparation for the sinful hobbies in the world.

The bible says: ‘one good deed erases a multitude of sins.’
Our Lady of Fatima asked the children to offer up each of their deeds of the day, ‘in reparation for the offences
Which offend Our Lady, Jesus, and the Father.’

You have a longing for Heaven and a distaste for earthly things, that is a gift of the Holy Spirit. But also recognise everything you do is important to God;
Whether you eat/ drink/ rest/ sleep/ talk/ listen/ work/ partake in your hobbies.

Pray each morning the Fatima prayer:
‘Immaculate Heart of Mary; I offer you my thoughts, words, joys, deeds and sufferings of this day, for your intentions, for my petitions, in reparation for the outrages, sacreliges, and indifferences which offend the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Almighty Father.’

Look back on the life of your mom/ dad/ grandparents, was their life wasted? No. Every single deed of theirs left a permanent influence on the well being of their kids. Life is for others. We are part of the Body of Christ. As a famous hymn says: ‘Christ has no body now but yours.’

Join, or start up a catholic youth prayer group, or attend regional catholic youth retreats during the year ☺️

I’ll tell you the purpose of living from my own perspective, which is of course influenced by my religious teaching, home environment, and other prior experiences. The point of it all is to cultivate your own talents, knowledge, and wisdom, have fun in the process, live with as much joy and passion as possible, and, at the same time, help as many other people (and animals as well as the planet) as you can, in whatever (small) ways you are able to. Live according to the golden rule and in keeping with the moral values of your religion. The purpose is NOT to get to heaven, and here I am much influenced by my own religion. If you should get to heaven, so much the better, but your purpose here on earth is what I just stated. This is my own view: take it or leave it.
