I love the story of Old Testament Joseph

. The inscription for the above image reads,
“Joseph’s cup is found in Benjamin’s bag.”
(la cupe ioseph est trove en le sac beniamin.)
The inscription for the below image reads,
“The sons of Jacob brought Jacob to Joseph in Egypt.”
(le filz iacob unt amene iacob en egypte a ioseph.)

Above are two Half-page miniature by W. de Brailes, an English artist active in Oxford about 1250 AD. It was probably prefatory matter to a Psalter, a Book on Psalms.

Genesis 44:12; Genesis 46:29

This folio depicts two scenes from the life of Joseph. Above, Joseph rose from disaster to rule Egypt under Pharaoh. His brothers came seeking grain. Joseph had their sacks filled, but had a cup placed in the sack of Benjamin, the youngest of the brothers. Below, the brothers brought Jacob to Joseph, who went to meet him in Goshen. Joseph fell on his father’s neck and wept. The elderly Jacob said to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive.”

More sound advice .

“Each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them” (1 Cor 7:17)

Where I need to go to find the truth .

“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” (1 Cor 2: 10)

I read a Jewish commentary on the story of Joseph. It’s one of the longest stories in Genesis. All of creation takes far fewer verses.

Some of the rabbis fault Joseph for leading on his brothers about who he was.

The irony is that by bringing his brothers and father down to Egypt, as the story goes, they end up in slavery. Joseph wept about the reunion with his brothers but he certainly showed some passive aggression towards them. I don’t recall that the sibling rivalries were all resolved.

If you enjoy the story, then don’t let me rain on your parade, but there are some unusual twists in it.

The situation with Potipher’s wife has caused some speculation. Why was she not satisfied with her marital union, instead seeking out this liaison with a foreign slave. The speculation is that Potipher was same-sex oriented and could not fulfill his husband’s duty to his wife; by the same token, Potipher was lenient with the handsome Joseph.

Jewish commentaries try to fill in the gaps in a story.

For Eucharistic adoration:

For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness. Wis 6:10

Joseph was very cautious with his brothers and so felt he needed to put them to the test. Some of his brothers were dubious characters. Read Gen.49 to see what Jacob said about each of his sons before he died.
He was the son of the wife that Jacob loved and he was fully aware that his brothers might harbour resentment against his full brother Benjamin also,. He knew that his father would be crushed if anything happened to Benjamin as had happened to him.
Apart from the fact that he longed to meet his full brother , there was the determination on Joseph’s part to protect Benjamin and their father Jacob .
After Jacob dies in Egypt his sons (Josephs brothers ) came to Joseph and prostrated themselves before him saying " We are your slaves " Genesis 50.20 " But Joseph said to them
"Do not fear:, Can I take the place of God? You intended evil against me, but God intended it for good, to do as he has done today, namely to save the lives of many people. Therefore , do not fear. I will provide for you and your despendents . Thus he reassured them, speaking kindly to them.
Joseph’s character was above reproach. The Bible doesn’t comment on Potipher except to say that he knew he could trust Joseph.

I can’t but God can .

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor 12:9)

Matthew 5:44. One of the first verses that I read since I came back to the Church. It humbled me, it helped me realize ego’s mean nothing (including my own.) Love is better than trying to “look cool”.

“But I say to you: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. And pray for those who persecute and slander you.”

From today’s alleluia

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world.”
Galatians 6:14

.
I really love the 6th and 8th chapters of Tobit.

With Catholic marriages in the USA having the same divorce rate as the average population, we need clear teaching and exhortation.

The version of Tobit as found in the Douay-Rheims Bible is especially
clear on which marriages please God. And, over which marriages devil has power and can prevail

The Book of Tobit is a Beautiful Love Story

Tobit sends his son, Tobiah (Tobias), on a journey to collect some money that is due him. Tobiah is led on this journey by Archangel Saint Raphael, who conceals his identity till the end.

While on the journey Tobiah meets Sarah, his distant relative. Young Sarah had been married seven times. However, on each night of her wedding her new groom was killed because of a curse.

Even so, Tobiah falls in love with her, especially when he learns she is of his same clan. St. Raphael comes to everyone’s aid, including Tobit, the father, who had gone blind.

Both challenging and encouraging .

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. " (Galatians 2:20)

But do I really know this and live like it’s true ?

“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” (Romans 6:6)

A good question .

"Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? " (Romans 6:16)

These spoke to me last night, when I was in need, and lifted me up out of the rushing waters that were going over my head:

Psa 27:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psa 27:2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

Psa 27:3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

Psa 27:4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

Psa 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

Psa 27:6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.

Wisdom 3:1-9… 1 But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them.

2 In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction,

3 and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace.

4 For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality.

5 Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;

6 like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them.

7 In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble.

8 They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever.

9 Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.

Great news .

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, , because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1-2)

I wonder if i behave like one of Christ’s ambassadors of reconciliation .

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.” (2 Cor 5:20)

My university chaplain sent me this last year when I was going through heavy spiritual desolation. It has become one of my favorite Bible verses.

Deuteronomy 4:29-31
“You shall seek the Lord, your God, and you shall indeed find him when you search after him with your whole heart and your whole soul. In your distress, when all these things shall have come upon you, you shall finally return to the Lord, your God, and heed his voice. Since the Lord, your God, is a merciful God, he will not abandon and destroy you, nor forget the covenant which under oath he made with your fathers.”
