Echoes. Purgatory and the good thief. Published 7/13/2016

This priest explains how the good thief could have been freed from the purification of purgatory before entering heaven. The story of the good thief is told in the Gospel of Saint Luke 23:40-43.
I would guess a baptism of desire would have the same effect as water baptism wiping the slate clean.

Where did Christ and the thief’s souls go, “that day” and for the next three days? No one went to heaven before the resurrection and ascension of our Lord. All spirits or souls, just or unjust were captives in one of the chambers of the abode of the dead, Sheol=Hebrew, Hades=Greek, Hell=English before the ascension.

Christ and the good thief went to the chamber of Hell called Abraham’s Bosom, paradise. Where Christ preached to the souls of the bodily dead, that he might bring us to God 1Pt3:18-19 & 1Pt4:6. When he ascended, he led a host of captives, the great cloud of witnesses into heaven, Hb11:1-12-1, Eph 4:8. That would be all those in Abraham’s Bosom or paridise.

Lk16:19-31, Christ reveals there are at least two chambers in Hell, one of torment were the soul of the rich man went. The other chamber was called Abraham’s Bosom, where the soul of Lazarus went, [Lk16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.]

Yes, and we don’t know that the good thief did not receive baptism, either of John or of Jesus. He clearly knew who Jesus was, and knew "this man has done nothing wrong’, so he may have listened to His teachings.

Very, very interesting!

would Abraham’s Bosom be empty then? Since all souls who go to hell are rejecting paradise?

I think that the baptism of blood refers to martydom and I don’t see the good thief as a martyr. Maybe a baptism of desire.
None of these apply. The man died under the old Covenant, as Jesus had not yet risen and ascended, and was therefore not bound by baptism. Paradise is most probably the place of Sheol where the righteous dead awaited the opening of heaven. The thief would have been among these Old Testament dead.

I heard Jesus and Dismas were in the same cell together, for three, four hours.
Let’s face it, that’ll open ones eyes to the truth.

I read in the Lost Books of the Bible…
Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus…
we’re travking a road thick with robbers …
and Dismas convinced the others - to let them be.

I’d like to know whether was heaven opened
  1. on Easter Sunday
    or
  2. when Jesus ascended 40 days later.
I thought, for those who had died earlier, it was unnecessary to wait 40 days till Jesus ascended because the gates of heaven were opened on Easter Sunday. Any links would be highly appreciated. I am thinking the physical presence of Jesus in heaven wasn’t necessary since in his glorified body he could be in several places.

Before the gates of heaven were opened, where did Enoch and Elijah (they didn’t die a bodily death) “hang out”?

Respectfully opinion only. Pondering on maybe should be looking within all Scripture for knowledge and understanding to give an answer about the thief on the cross, today will be with me in Paradise?

Having to go back in Jesus time 2,000 years ago within the understanding of the belief of the Hebrew Israelites at that time? What was only understood at that time?

Was in a time when Bloodline>genealogy, Righteousness >was greatly important, was it not? Prophecy spoken by the Prophets> The Messiah, Savior would come from the bloodline of King David, His chosen Bloodline of Priesthood also?>God chosen Nation?

With the thief on the cross Jesus time came, a shadow of things to come had arrived?

Divine Wisdom , Jesus time had come > to Fulfill the Prophecies, spoken of Him, by the Prophets? Jesus did so throughout His teaching, preaching > Fulfilling > giving the Full Measure, Teaching of the Laws? Truth > Was always Open to all?

With the thief on the cross, Jesus words spoken for all to hear maybe, the thief not being of the bloodline, the door is open to all to enter the Kingdom?

Thus no flesh and blood enters the Kingdom ( Matthew 16-13-17).So what was Jesus trying to teach us what enters the Kingdom then?

1 Peter 2:2-3 " Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good" Peter states? >cannot speak to you about Spiritual matters while your still sipping milk? having not reach Spiritual maturity, still thinking with our carnal minds?

1 Corinthians 15:30 " I declare to you brothers, that flesh and Blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable"

Phillipians 3:21. " Who shall change our vile body that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able to subdue all things unto himself".>> Our Heavenly Father can, Jesus can?

Flesh and Blood > morality, dies, corrupt > matter returns to matter from which it came and what is Spirit does it not return to that from which it came Spiritual Being? Ashes to ashes, dust to dust? Love Me with your whole heart, soul and mind?

Unless you are born from above? Spiritually? Spiritual vs Matter? John 1:12-13 God breathe? God breathed into Adams nostrils?

Galatians 5:19-21 Spirit wars against the flesh. Flesh lusteth against the Spirit?

Commanded now? >Go into all Nations, call out and gather a body of believers spread the Good News?

All blood is sacred unto Me!! Destroy not. Right in the beginning of Genesis. All Human Beings have been given Life through me? Return unto to ME> how? He gives us instructions, repent with a pure heart, truly sorry?

Question so did the thief enter Paradise that day > today you will be with me in Paradise , believe he did! Peace 🙂

The man died under the old Covenant,
Respectfully opinion only. Who was this thief and what was his crime? Were known and called bandit in such time? What Tribe did he come from? Was he Greek? Was He Roman? Was he Persian? Was he a Pharisee? Sadduccees? Essence? Nazarene? A Pagan? many different sects in such times were there not? Was He a Hebrew Israelite and what Tribe did he come from? Did he even believe in God or gods? Was he a traveler from another Nation? culture etc? etc etc

And were there not many Covenants made with many all throughout the Bible? Prophecy still not fulfilled>>Jeremiah 31:31-34>Renewed Covenant has this been fulfilled yet? Peace 🙂

Respectfully opinion only. There are metaphors, poems, symbolism, parables, songs, etc within the bible is there not? Sorry I do not take all literally. When a love one dies, being a believer do we not tell our grandchildren or family, he/she is taken up into Heaven? In heaven now, God took him/her to be with him? God took him home, up to be with him etc? Took him up is said even today is it not, a figure of speech? maybe so in the time of Enoch and Elijah?

God Spoke, Spoken right in the beginning and how he also communicates, through dreams in visions etc, through our own conscience, through others, like with Jacob latter, while he was sleeping? Through a burning bush, spoken maybe within Moses conscious came to mind, places thoughts within us?

Our Heavenly Father is He not an>> Infinite Eternal Spiritual Being?
God never dies?
Not all Beings are made of flesh maybe?
There is billions of Life forms on earth that live and breath, all unique?
Trees breathe in what we breath out? Interesting?

Love me with your whole Heart Soul and Mind, first commandment for a reason maybe? We cannot hold or gaze upon our ,or hold in our physical hands our >Heart ( not physical) Soul or Mind ( thoughts) can we?

We are told as written, many many many times within Holy Scripture are we not?> That Flesh and Blood, does not enter the Kingdom, so can one tell me what enters the Kingdom of God then?

St Peter 2:2?
Does St Peter more or less, is he telling us? I cannot talk to you about spiritual matters while your still sipping milk, did he not? For were thinking with our carnal minds, is this not also mention within scripture?

Galatians 5:19-21? Spirit wars against the Flesh?
Luke 24-29? Spirit does not have flesh and bones?
Matthew 16-13-17? Flesh and Blood has not revealed that to you?
Phillpians 3:21? Who shall change our vile bodies?

Interesting is all and the gates I believe were always open since the beginning of time, Jesus meets with Moses, Elijah does he not in the garden…where were they coming from? Enoch died was taken up, figure of speech, home? Elijah the same? Just opinion only right or wrong but flows in what is written, from the front of the book to the back?
Peace 🙂

He was a Jewish insurrectionist, a thief and likely a murderer.
