What about dress code

Is it ok for painters to dress as if meeting with their boss? 😃

Maybe I’m just a darned ol’ hayseed, but I have never understood the proscription against jeans.
If you were invited to a private dinner with the Pope, how would you dress? I HOPE it wouldn’t be in jeans and a t-shirt. Therefore, we should give just as much respect to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament by wearing the best clothes (albeit appropriate, no tuxedo) clothes we have. Unless of course your going or coming from somewhere that would REQUIRE other wise and you don’t have time to change.

I live in Northern California and normally attend 7:30 AM mass on Sundays. Our parish would probably be considered upper middle class if you wanted to peg it on a socioeconomic scale. People seems to wear whatever they are comfortable in from walking shorts to business suits for men and capris to business suits for women. Most people wear chinos or dress jeans and polo shirts or nice tops. People get more “dressed-up” for 9:30 mass and are even more casual at 5:30 masses on Saturday and Sunday. I always have thought that it was more important to be worried about what was in your heart at mass than what you were wearing on your body.😉

Sorry you feel that way. I cannot think of anyone who deserves more respect in everything from our behavior to attire than God. The difference between us may be that I believe God is present in the church whenever He is in the Tabernacle. I also believe God is truly present in the Eucharist and must be treated with utmost respect and reverence, something that seems to have been lost since VII (can I say that or does it violate some forum prohibition?). The lack of respect for God is very evident in the behavior of parishioners who cannot be quiet in church, who come to Mass as late as the gospel and leave at communion, who read the bulletin during Mass and who dress for Mass like they were on the way to a picnic or a flea market.

For the record, the only vehicles I notice in the church parking lot are those of the misguided Catholics with Obama stickers plastered all over the rear as if there is something to be proud of in that loyalty! Now a well restored farm truck or classic pickup might catch my eye as well.
Should black people be allowed to go to mass with the whites?

Oh, income restrictions, we should do that too! Anyone who makes less than what you make is just too low class and should just go away.

Anyone who lives in a different part of the country also cannot be Catholic. Anyone from or in a foreign country cannot be Catholic either.

This is getting to be so much fun, once we get finished marking off all the people who don’t measure up, we’ll all get to be our own popes! Then we can dress however we want when we meet ourselves.

The rule SHOULD be, dress like you’d dress to meet with the Pope. God’s more important anyway 👍

This means if you go to Mass every day, dress to kill every day 😃 No gym clothes or sloppy jeans or plumber pants  ever again! (if only :p)

I agree wholeheartedly with you, Bob Aliano. It saddens me so much to see people approaching the Blessed Sacrament with no reverence or respect, dressed as if they were preparing to clean out their garage rather than present themselves to their Creator and Saviour. Our fallen nature rebels against courtesy, refined manners, and dignified dress. The importance of taking the time to prepare oneself properly to receive holy Communion both spiritually and physically (in other words adopting the proper attitude and attire) cannot be overstated.

wow I didn’t intend for this to turn into a debate I was just curious as I am new to mass. I am not sure of the nature of some of the posts but I am not okay with any kind of segregation be it male female black white or finances any of it. God loves us all…

and I believe that God is ALSO present everywhere in my daily life … should I dress up and pretend to be super holy for you to see that I respect Him ?
Does it need to be a "well restored "truck to meet your criteria ?
not meaning to yell , or pick a fight . I do realize that there are folks who go to mass just to be seen there and really are playing at church … I hope they stick around long enough for the Spirit to touch their hearts . I just think perhaps you place alot more emphasis on respecting how you yourself feel towards our God more so than what God thought of folks honestly coming to Him . I say kudos for those who show up ! Thank you for joining in the mass with the rest of the body , tell the brethren you see who are not here that we miss them and entreat them to come and worship with us .

People just get that way … it’s unfortunate that we feel we have to fight over everything, but don’t worry too much about it. Anyway, I have never been to a church with a dress code, but my pastor periodically makes comments about how women should dress modestly, and is more or less ignored. Maybe a few people change their way of dressing because of his admonitions, I don’t know. Regarding your other question, I am a woman and I wear a hat to Mass, but it is not required.

Congratulations on your conversion! 🙂

Hi all,

I was concerned about what to wear when I first began attending Latin mass 2 years ago. I noticed that people where somewhat of a range of clothing on Sundays.

In one particular family, the women/girls wear small print dresses, long in length, dressing, in what is considered nowadays, ‘quite conservatively’. Most women at mass wear either dresses or skirts and blouses/tops. In the summer heat some come with short-sleeves. Men mostly either wear chinos and a polo shirt or a suit. There are some folks who come in jeans, but only a handful.

I, myself, wear skirts with a top covered by a cotton sweater or jacket or a dress. My husband wears chino pants and a polo shirt. He used to wear a jacket, but when he realized other men did not necessairly wear one, he was pleased to stop.

Overall, most people make an effort to dress up. Hope this helps!

Now I feel bad. I went to church last night and worn jeans and a t shirt. However, on Saturday night mass I wear slacks and a button down shirt. Lot of folks wear flip flops and shorts here.
When I lived in Poland women wore skirts and men slacks, never say any jeans.

In my experience, parishes in need of dress codes will not post them. Parishes with posted dress codes generally do not need them. Posted codes are rarely enforced.

If visiting a parish for the first time, dress modestly, observe how female parishioners attend mass. If you choose to return, you may wish to conform your attire fit in with local custom.

One exception. If you are a biological woman, NEVER enter ANY Catholic Church without a proper head covering.

I was just curious about other churches besides the one I attended. The church I went to didn’t really seem to have a dress code except for no tank tops. what is the dress code like at you church? do any of you wear the hair covering?

I attend a church that is literally on the beach in a very touristy town and therefore during the summer, shorts, flip flops and T-shirts are the norm rather than the exception. Rarely will I see a tie although some of the older folks do wear a sports coat, especially in the winter.

I find it a little ironic that some say it is disrespectful to God to wear casual clothes during a liturgy. My understanding is that God will judge one’s actions and not by one’s fashion sense. If that were the case we’d all be Southern Baptists. The fact that you are attending mass and worshiping God, to me, would seem more “respectful” to God than whether or not I am wearing an Armani suit.

For me, I doubt that when I stand before God in judgment and he goes down the list of my accomplishments He will read off saying “you helped the poor and widows, donated your time to the elderly, tithed to the Church but you wore a T shirt to mass and therefore are unworthy”.

Remember God judges us by what we do in private and what is in our hearts along with our actions, not what we wear.

I have been here for 3 years and have never seen a head scarf worn by any female. Seemed strange at first but now I no longer notice.

thanks for all the posts I was just curious because I am brand new. I am converting to catholicism. and what i ment by hair covering was head covering…hat, scarf mantilla etc I see it varies greatly and will speak with my priest as to what to do at our church
I would suggest you wear your veil. You are obviously moved by some reason. I’ll give you my two cents. No matter what your priest may say.
  1. It has been a tradition (maybe “T”) in the church up until the 60s/70s.
  2. The reason I would suggest “T” is that it is clearly taught in Sacred Scripture for the practice.
  3. Our Magesterium still obey this teaching. (most parish priests might be just scared to death to tell the women or they don’t know why themselves)
So if all three agree, Tradition, Scripture and Magesterium. Then I would say, follow your gut! Bottom line is, if you are obeying this out of reference and obedience to the Lord, He I would guess is well pleased with His faithful daughter.
God Bless.

Well, if the “local custom” is a tank top and miniskirt, then I don’t recommend conforming to that custom.

After reading posts here, i feel deeply ashamed. Up to this day i have been wearing jeans and felt bad when visiting church.

So should i grab (as in buying) a:

a) a full suit and suitable shoes to it for masses
b) also get a khaki pair of paints

?

I am very new and still has a lot to learn. I am following classes and hope to convert in due time of easter 2011. So forgive me if i`m sound green or newbeing.

I agree with you. I highly doubt God cares what one wears. Anyone can dress very nice, but if your heart isn’t in the right place, then it doesn’t really matter how you look. Of course I believe that everyone should dress respectfully but it shouldn’t matter if you dress up or down. Church is not a fashion show.

In my parish, people dress causally. I’ve seen jeans and tee shirts and most people just wear their everyday clothes and look just fine. But some people could dress a little more respectfully. I’ve seen a jean mini skirt, tanks and halter tops. I would never wear that to church. I like to wear dressy pants or just a nice pair of pants and a top, sometimes even a tee. I wear flip flops to church also. I would wear a skirt but I don’t have any long enough. I would wear jeans if they were a dark wash. My husband wears slacks and a polo top and I dress my 1 year old in his best play clothes. I never cover my head and I’ve never seen any other woman either. Don’t know if my parish has a dress code or not.

Hello,

This is just my opinion. I find it so interesting that so many men and women are defending their “right” to wear whatever they want to in order to attend Mass. They see nothing wrong with what they are wearing to God’s house.

I do however seem to remember Jesus talking to someone (in the Bible) about the clothes they choose to wear to a wedding feast, I fully admit that I don’t know where this is in the Bible, Even back then, there were “proper” clothing that was “expected” to be worn for certain occassions. Is Our Lord sending a message through men and women who are questioning what those that attend Mass are wearing? I wonder? Interesting question.

Sincerely,

Eiram
