Also, I think people are obsessing over the bare minimum. Yes, you can wear jeans to church if you have nothing else to wear but for most of us, (who can easily afford a pair of dress slacks or a skirt which often cost far less than jeans do today) this is the bare minimum. It’s modest but that’s about it.
I don’t really feel like harping over whether this style or that is “proper” but I encourage you all to take a look at how men and women dressed prior to the so-called “cultural revolution” on a daily basis (not just to mass!) and then tell my why it seems so rediculous to hold to similar standards for one hour out of the week.

As an added thought, if God truly doesn’t care what we wear to Mass then why are we concerned about promoting modesty? So other people aren’t scandalised? But I thought we weren’t supposed to be thinking about our neighbours’ opinions during Mass?

If nothing is true and everything depends upon our own personal preferences and what we want, then anything goes and if anything goes then Catholics have forfeited self-control and are no different from the heathen who acts on his basest desires.

Amen. Being a Catholic isn’t about doing the bare minimum needed to get by, but going the extra mile to grow in holiness and be a good example to others. We have misused our freedom when we use it to do less than we ought.

What example are you setting by pompously spewing all this mock outrage at how other Catholics present themselves for Mass? Let me get this straight. Faithful Catholics are assisting daily Mass - within walking distance of where you’re sitting - and you have the nerve to accuse THEM of minimalism?
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is out here every day, not just Sunday. If you want to upgrade the appearance standards of other parishioners, maybe you should get off your ruddy posterior, clean yourself up, cover your tattoos with whatever clothing is you think is appropriate, and lead by example.
When YOU’RE ready to go the extra mile, maybe you can share your fashion sense with the EF parish you’ve been threatening to visit.

With all the discussion of attire, I went to 18:30 Mass tonight. There were 12 of us 8 men and 4 women. All the men had slacks and button down shirts on. Two women had dresses on, one had dress pants on the other jeans. No head coverings at all.

Son, I’ve gone the extra mile and do so every weekend. Just because I can’t get to a TLM as easily as you can doesn’t change a thing. I’ll “spew” my outrage as long as I see fit and you can either back me up like a grown-up or back off.

Clancy, the homeless one who was offered a home, doesn’t enter into the worship space, but, he does show the ultra-casual attire and attitude to the extreme: crossed legs and coffee sipping, sleeping outside the chapel … we chat with him on occasion!
My shirtless friend, who lives in his parent’s home, had a shirt on for Good Friday services … yes, plaid, God love him. He was once a Moonie. I dearly hope he gets ahold of his mind completely. He would have been a great English teacher! I wondered if there is a closet at the farmhouse full of his father’s wardrobe!
The wedding fellow, at the American Legion, prob. was a motorcyclist, perhaps a Veteran, not sure, I wouldn’t introduce myself to him. My aunt noticed my knees: A child can have their butt in the air, but, please, don’t show your knees to your aunts!
My cousin, the farmer and his wife, Knight of Columbus, denim jeans for a wedding, pretty well off, don’t know but that he might have been just a little disrespectful for the renewal of vows. My cousin, who was renewing, once burned down a grocery store … I love her, she is definitely on the right track with the renewal of vows. Her husband is dying of brain cancer, BTW, and it was his idea. Fr. “E.” was not available so they had a CofC Minister do it.
The main concern lately, with the women at St. W., IMO, has been to color or not to color?! Our hair, of course. … I wish toes were always covered.
Sorry for the angst here. I don’t think anyone was degrading people for being blue-collar, or wearing jeans. I’ve read through most of the posts. A lot of good people, or is there something wrong with just being “good.” Can’t remember every rule …

Excuse me sir, but you did not answer the question , which in your words “should be so obvious”. And if you don’t want to read the opinions and personal stories of others, you probably don’t want to spend your time on a message board where people are encouraged to express their opinions. The reason we’re all here is because of our love of God and we want to learn more about worshiping him. I think it would also do us well to learn about paitence and tolerance. If we become angry and argumenitive with each other, satan is the only one who wins. If my post hurt you or upset you, please forgive me. It was not my intent and was done unconciously.

HAHAHA! I agree about the “short-shorts”. I was in my doctor’s waiting room yesterday and an elderly couple came in. The woman had on a dress - what my Grandma used to call a “house dress”. But the man had on a polo shirt, sadals with dark socks and polyester short-shorts.Very tiny church here, lots of snow birds in the winter, and no dress code.
The worse thing I ever noticed in our church was a 75 year old man in short shorts… just wrong on so many levels!
Our priest is from Ghana and he’s very relaxed. I like him, but he’s MUCH more relaxed than I was used to back east. It’s at least 35-40 miles to the next church, across desert, so I go to my parish church and sometimes cringe.
Then he came near me and bent over to look at the magazines! I had to look away…

The correct answer to that is to have the color of the bikini match the appropriate liturgical season… The increasingly popular practice of wearing blue bikinis during Advent, however, should be strictly discouraged.I don’t see any reason for you to feel bad, you asked a simple, legitimate question. It’s not like you asked “In which bikini should I attend mass?”
