What are "bad" charities?

My understanding is limited to that your $10 in donations goes towards dog food rather than soup that can give a roomful of people a meal? So be it.

We are lucky to have the freedom to decide what to support. Where did I suggest otherwise?

I do not support animal charities, you do. We can agree to disagree.
“I think good stewardship would be a nice bullet rather than caging a destitute, tortured animal in an overcrowded facility that it will more than likely die in anyway.”

I was referring to the above statement specifically in saying that your understanding was limited.

And I suppose that you could say that your understanding is limited in that I give to (monthly) both Church / St. VdP (monthly food donated, as well as cash) / various Catholic charities as well as an animal charity or two, and (my fave secular charity) - modestneeds.org .

For those us of that the Lord has blessed, we can give to more that one thing. So your zero sum approach doesn’t work for me. Your initial post came off a little judgmental, that’s all.

Red cross, because instead of food to the hungry, they give bibles…

Yeah, sorry if I don’t have much compassion for animals, outside of ending needless suffering.

My zero sum approach to this illustrates my avoiding a lukewarm approach to life. I just don’t think animals should take precedence over people.

Have a wonderful day 🙂

I’ve cut back donations to the church that are divvied up with the diocese by way of my de-funding the priestly predation cover-up. So I like to give to those on the front lines–as well as to parish-only stuff. Here’s a great one. Sister Donna Loretto Gunn, CSJ, is working in the Mississippi Delta and that means she’s serving those whose ancestors were slaves. This is an aging populace with illiteracy as one of the chief plagues. Sister Donna is wily, and took IRS training to get refunds for her working poor who were too illiterate to hammer out their tax returns.

This demographic is really hard-hit and I beg you to consider donating to: SACRED HEART PARISH & FAMILY CENTER, 1439 HIGHWAY 17, CAMDEN, MS/MISSISSIPPI 39045-9524 Call Sister Donna (She’s a charming older Irish nun and a former teacher) at: 662/468-2354 or email her at: donnaorettogunn@yahoo.com
She coordinates special projects, and that often means getting food for those who are on the brink of starvation. The three big guns of spiritual warfare are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. May God help us use those gifts to vanquish the enemies of “life and blessing.”

I really do agree that people should be the number one priority of our time and money - but that we can do our part by treating our animals ethically. That, and I only ever consider animal shelters when picking out a pet, so I support their cause.

That is my opinion.

I also think that basic human needs should come first - yes, that means pro-life causes, food, water, shelter, clothing, medical care. After that education and opportunities. That’s my opinion, and I donate to all these causes in varying amounts…I personally feel it’s like a ladder you have to step up, but then again, the only way to break a cycle of poverty is through education, so maybe it’s the other way round?

There are some charities that I think are superfluous and take away from real causes. Someone was raising money to send “poor” college students to their school’s bowl game.

Then again, everyone has their passions, so everything gets done. There must be some person out there who values football more than human needs.
