I clearly was not very careful in what I had written. Forgive me.
By “western” I mean that in our culture (European-American) that is civilized. As I consider the liberty of the intellectual a cultural ideal, and homosexuality an ideal form of love-expression, and secular education as the ideal form of education, I consider things like the Bible to be terribly non-Western (though it is very beautiful and poetic in parts). Homosexuality, intellectual freedom, secular education I consider to be the height of civilization.
One of the greatest civilizations I can imagine could be found in ancient Athens.
I don’t think this is what the Latin Church was trying to preserve. Maybe it did so by accident.
If so, the preservation and invention of western culture would be the Latin Church’s greatest sin, because it flies in the face of the type of culture they would consider ideal.
