What are we to do as Catholics?

US people are uncomfortable with the idea of being unable to execute criminals they consider heinous.
I’m sorry this is off the thread topic, but I wanted to respond to your comment with a different perspective. As a Catholic who supports the death penalty, as long as that’s a position I’m able to hold until the church says definitely otherwise, it isn’t for the reason you listed.

Many members of my family are in law enforcement, and some are in department of corrections. Even in maximum security prisons, some criminals are extremely difficult to control. They have rights even in prison and there is only so much that can be done. Even prisoners in solitary confinement get time each day out of their cells. I think many people are uncomfortable with the idea that some people are truly heinous, and use every opportunity to harm anyone around them by any means necessary, even if all they have at their disposal is their own bodily fluids. Correction officers and other inmates do not deserve to have their lives continuously threatened by individuals like that, and for that reason alone I think the death penalty is necessary in an extreme case like this.

While you are entitled to your viewpoint, it’s pretty much the same as what I posted. You consider these criminals heinous and a danger to others, such as those who work in law enforcement, and therefore you would prefer that we have the option to execute them.

I could offer arguments to counter those but I don’t want to derail the thread.
Also, I have learned from many past forums that it is pointless and fruitless to argue with anyone who thinks that the US should continue to have a death penalty. It will not convince them and all it does is get people worked up. I’ve seen entire forums schism and people get triggered and have emotional breakdowns or panic attacks over these discussions.

Yes, I see why you might prefer to focus on the process aspect. It seems readily understandable to many people, whereas there are people who will say someone deserves to die. (I don’t understand that too well).

Still strong and whole! It’s not important what they say about the Pope, the main thing is how do you do as a Christian.
I have met with very harsh responses and have seen so many deplorable statements about the Church since from media outlets, non-Catholics, and even some Catholics.
Those people, they are always there to criticize the Church. In God’s mercy, not all of them are something like that. It messes up my day whenever I heard of those people who fight our faith and Church. As a Catholic, let’s stand for the truth and be calm. GOD knows that we’re giving out our best.

Yesterday I was thoroughly and harshly rebuked by a Baptist family friend for continuing to go to a Catholic Church, (FSSP). “You’ve got to sever yourself from that evil man, (Pope Francis), or you’ll end up in Hell.” I tried to explain that the priests are as horrified as she is, and so are the fellow parishioners I know, but she seems stuck on the idea that whatever the Pope says is dogma.
It’s very frustrating. Rather than fight and argue with those who either can’t see the truth or don’t want to hear it, I think the Catholic reaction should be to 1) Try to correct, and if it doesn’t work, 2) bear the unjust shame as Christ.

I just continue to read my books and practice my faith to the best of my ability. To be honest I don’t pay much attention to what Francis says. This latest flub on his part I got worked up over and still am to an extent but I just gotta remember to ignore it.
