What are you doing to avoid the virus?

Exactly. I know people who think it is a hoax. This is how it spreads.
Hoaxes don’t kill people. I am so mad that statements were in the news cycle about it being a hoax. People are naive and will run with stuff like that without taking the time to learn facts or gather context. My uncle has it. My roommate’s friend had it. Three of my coworkers have family members that died from it. I feel I may have had it and recovered. I’m just one person and that’s how much it has entered my life. It’s real.

Since masks are mandated most places where I live, I think more people would be wearing them if they were AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE. If they want everybody wearing masks, how about making sure we can all buy one. Maybe the individual grocery stores could pass out one-use masks. Or they could be on sale in the store.

I don’t sew. A friend was nice enough to give me a couple of surgical masks, which she said could be worn several times, even though they are one-use masks. Otherwise, I would not have had access to a mask. I wore a bandana over my face a couple of times, but I don’t think it does much good.

In New York, bodegas and street vendors have masks for sale. I’m not sure how they are sourcing them but they are available. I’m curious why other parts of the country are not able to source them. There are masks online that can work with some creativity and instructions on how to construct no-sew masks. I think part of the problem is this type of information is not being widely distributed. I ordered two masks from Etsy that contain a filter and were designed to keep out pollution. I have a separate filter I insert and will double the masks to increase protection for use in public.

The mask gets me a lot of approving “attaboys” when people see it and comment on it. Again, it was sheer Divine Providence that led me to have a mask such as this, before any of this became an issue. I keep the mask in the car, discreetly hidden in the floorboard in a folded-over Lidl bag — these are now very valuable, and leaving it loose in the car would just be an invitation to have the windows smashed.
I’m not seeing that online now of course. What is the price range and where did you source it? I’m obviously not expecting to come across one now.
I got it from Advance Auto Parts back in January for about $35, if that much.

Incidentally, I no longer patronize Advance Auto Parts or CarQuest because, since then, I’ve learned that they support JDRF (embryonic stem cell research).

Similar auto parts stores carry basically the same thing, but good luck finding one these days.

Thanks! That’s way cheaper than I imagined. I’m sure this made a killer cosplay component.

Today was the first day of mandatory face coverings in businesses, so I wore a bandanna to get into Costco and Walmart. I noticed it gave me a false sense of security. I hope people continue to be equally mindful to stay away from other around them, or this mask mandate will backfire.

I wipe down everything I bring into the house with bleach but that’s probably me being a little OCD. My son still goes out with his friends so who knows what he’ll bring into the house.

And I am starting to hike again now that they opened the trails and beaches. We have to go on living. I can’t stay home for months on end, I’ll go nuts.

Not brave enough to get sushi yet but did get takeout Mexican this week for the first time in a month.

Sure, but there are N95 masks that do not form to the bridge, and are a lot more dome shaped
Yes some N95 masks are domed shape, but they still have the metal strip in them that allow a good seal. You need to spend some time smoothing the metal strip over your nose and cheeks to form a good seal. The base of the dome mask must sit under your chin and the elastic top elastic band must sit at the back of your head and the bottom elastic around your the back of your neck. As seen below.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

If you put the mask on as is then you will not have a good seal.
If you are a child or an small adult then the mask size may not be a good fit as seen here:

It is your choice to wear a mask, especially if the area you live in does not have any stipulations on wearing them in public. Just make sure you wash your hands, don’t touch your face and stay 2 meters away from people not in your bubble when in public areas.

Well, we were not planning to do this birth at home, the hospital is convenient with nurses caring for you left and right, not to mention insurance covers birth at hospital but midwives out of pocket. However I have done a home birth before with a midwife, so not too worried about that. I have a different midwife lined up ( the lady who helped before doesn’t travel so far anymore ) but we haven’t actually met because of the circumstances. 3 more months of pregnancy !

He actually didn’t get to use it for cosplay because we were going to attend a comic-con, but had to cancel the trip, due to the CV pandemic. There will be better times.

We limit shopping to once a week early in the morning to beat the crowd, wear a mask (so in case we get it we limit spreading it to others, or at least make transmission more difficult), maintain social distancing and wash our hands every time we return home. Fortunately, since this has started my employer has had all employees working from home so we only go out for groceries and exercise, but we always maintain social distancing.

I am trying my best to avoid the virus…by being cautious and aware of my surroundings…have three each of face masks. Since they are now unattainable, I downloaded a couple of face mask patterns and set up my sewing machine on my desk and cut out a pattern as a template. This was last week…I am trying to get motivated…ugh! I am more focused on my homeowners insurance policy which will be due in a week! I wanted a book on insurance to refresh myself on some aspects on my policy and thought I could order one from a local bookstore…it is taking a week to be delivered…could go get it…ten miles away…but just don’t feel like taking the risk! Went to the grocery store two days ago…early in the morning…many were not wearing masks…and some seem to not stay their distance…I tried to move about as briskly as possible to get done. When I arrived home I felt so mentally and physically exhausted! Here I am living in the USA and feel like my freedom is gone! I am restricted and there is nothing I can do about it if I want to be safe and avoid the virus! I get so irritated…and I pray more! 😷 🇺🇸

Thanks and I hope you’re right. I’m afraid it will still be around and we are being extra careful. I doubt we let up any especially with a new life outside the womb. And if the virus is gone by August wont we just be awaiting a second wave of it  I was alot more optimistic at the beginning of this thing.

No one should waste an N95 mask by using it without a proper fit.

Think about a vacuum cleaner with a filter bag. If the bag gets a hole in it or there is a gap in the seal, how much of the flow of air goes through the bag instead of through the hole or gap?

If you are wearing a material that restricts aerosol droplets, it is resistant enough to the passage of air that air will not go through it unless there is no other less-restrictive route to go through. Likewise, if you are wearing an N95 mask but do not have it fitted properly, you will do most of your breathing around the mask, not through it. It will catch a good deal of your spit if you sneeze, but it will not be able to filter the air you inhale, because that air will be going around the mask.

Also, try not to handle the outside of the mask after you have exposed it to air that might be infected. The medical people I know who had to re-use masks would put them in an undisturbed place (like in a paper bag) outside their homes and then not touch them again for days, so that any virus trapped by the filter would be non-viable by the time they used the mask again. (Also: take care that you don’t assume that the only pathogen on the mask must be a virus. If you got mold or mildew or bacterial materials on it, obviously it would be a mistake to store it in a damp environment where mold, mildew or bacteria could grow).

Yes! It is also still very important when wearing masks to be just as vigilant about everything else as if you were not wearing a mask. Masks are to be used in addition to other means of hygiene, not in place of other means of hygiene.

One could picture it by thinking about using a mask for sanding. Imagine the sawdust you kick up is very irritating–breathing even a small amount could make you sick. This gives the idea about how carefully masks need to be handled and how the other aspects of hygiene still need to be followed. The best thing to do is to avoid being exposed to strangers at all, as much as possible.

Another problem is the efficiency of the N95 masks. I’ve heard of people passing out because they are breathing in too much of their own carbon dioxide instead of oxygen.

I operate an essential business. We take every reasonable precaution, yes for our protection, but more importantly, the protection of the customers. You’d be shocked at the lack of courtesy and common sense of the general public.
