What are you giving up for Lent 2019?

Smoking and alcohol. The latter I’ve given up already, been a couple weeks, but I want to remain off it so I’m including it in Lent. Smoking I’ve given up for a month before but hopefully this time will stick

I bought the book, ‘Give Up Worry for Lent’ by Gary Zimak and intend to do the daily readings, responses, reflections, and prayers. Looking forward to it because I’ve struggled with anxiety a little over the years. I figured that giving up worry is actually adding quality to my life — addition by giving up something I don’t want to have in the first place.

I also plan to give up soda pop or ice cream, maybe both. I might just have a Coke float on Tuesday 👍

This is a little unusual, but I’ve decided to give up using automatic doors, where practical*. Automatic doors are a nice convenience for me as a wheelchair user, but I have enough mobility that they’re not really a necessity, most of the time. And they’re a luxury that many people with disabilities around the world don’t have access to.

*I said “where practical” because there are some automatic doors where I don’t have a choice - they’ll open when I merely approach them, or push on them. But there are others where you have to push a button to operate the door opener, and you can choose to operate them manually.

I don’t give things up for Lent.
I think it is proactive to do additional works or charity, to say additional prayers, and to fast and perform other good works.
I don’t give things up, I take on additional responsibilities. 🙏🙏🙏

Coffee
Alcohol
Any other drink other than milk/water
Baked goods
Candy

Exceptions for nights of older daughter’s bday, first reconciliation and younger daughter’s baptism.

Not giving up anything, but I plan on doubling my weekly contribution to the collections basket and the poor box, as well as continue to pray the rosary daily. Also, staying of this site since all I do is post bitter, angry rants.
You say you’re not giving up anything but in fact you are. You are taking your hard earned money and giving it to the poor instead of buying chips and coke and chocolate for yourself… You are giving up your time and praying instead of watching TV or doing some other activity that you like… AND you are giving up sites that cause you to rant and be angry. Those are worthy gifts to give to Jesus! He will bless your effort… I’m praying for you, too!

I’m thinking of doing the same thing, giving up worrying.

I worry too much about anything and everything.

Giving up breakfast, sweets during weekdays and sodas.

Do a daily meditation after my daily rosary.

I’m going to finish reading the catechism. So, I’m not actually giving something specific except the things that I would be doing instead.

We’re going to pray through the stations of the Cross weekly.

Still trying to figure out our almsgiving.

I realize that giving up worrying is easier said than done, but I heard on EWTN radio about Gary Zimak’s book on the subject and thought I’d give it a shot. I hope and pray you will overcome worry, too. All the best to you, Sarcelle. 👍

I still don’t know what I’m giving up but I have decided from the advice here, to read the Gospels daily. And to use the Magnificat’s Lectio Divina scripture to do lectio divina for the first time each Lent Sunday. I don’t know if i can give up foods as i’m expecting but I would like to give up something that strengthens my character, like not complaining.(also advice from here)

My daughter and I will start everyday bible reading. I will receive Great Adventure Bible for children today from Amazon.
That’s great. I’ll be reading the Gospels straight through along with all the footnotes. I got a head start reading the first few Matthew chapters today. I’m hoping to give up toxic political message boards including the world news forum here.

I am giving up eating when I am not actually hungry. I have been stress eating lately since starting grad school, full time job, & internship, so it’ll be a challenge for sure. I am adding praying 1 decade of the rosary a day.

I never heard of this, but it is a real thing! I changed mine to missing red-green (?) which greatly reduced a lot of the color, and will switch to greyscale in Lent too 🙂
(Just putting it on greyscale makes it incredibly difficult to play solitaire, so maybe I will also give up solitaire for Lent 😉 )

After lots of thought and making adjustments to make this more manageable I’m going to do the following:

Fast/penance: social media limited to one hour and no CAF. Days of fasting and abstinence.

Prayer: Daily Rosary and daily reflection from 40 Days at the Foot of the Cross.

Almsgiving: volunteering at local facilities once a week

That’s cool- I’ve never done it before for Lent but I just thought I would try it as a penance this year! If you have an iPhone the grayscale option is in the Accessibility area under color filters.

For me the phone experience from games to web browsing to photos is very different using the phone in that mode and it’s less “enjoyable” which I guess makes sense 🙂

I knew someone who gave up taking her car to work for Lent. She went with public transportation. Tough thing to do in a freezing Minneapolis winter!

I am going to give up swearing and caffeine and and being lazy and wanting to stay in my pjs all day and losing my temper and going out to eat and i was going to only eat one meal a day every day but i was told it was not a good idea i am going to be more respectful and go to a confession service during lent and be more honest and spend less money and i am giving up being jealous

One pastor we had years ago that I never forgot was he said we should give up one bad habit every Lent and stay off it for life. Good thought. I will be doing more spiritual reading. Our lives are busy taking care of our 2 1/2 year old identical twin granddaughters, and we as a couple have a daily prayertime together already, so it will be a challenge to get my spiritual reading in. God will help. We say the Office, rosary and chaplet together daily and that is a blessing.
