What are you giving up for Lent?

I believe I recall my pastor joking about this last year that as a child he thought the same thing but had to be corrected by his parents. I don’t think we get a day off during Lent.
We do not have to follow our lenten observance on Sunday. You can if you want to.😃

I think pop.

Yes, I said pop… I am from the midwest, so don’t give me a hard time for not saying soda.

Best of luck with all of your lenten observations and sacrifices. Just remember what He has done for you!

Exactly… Sunday’s aren’t counted in the “40 days of lent”…

If you check your calendar… count the days between Ash Wednesday and Easter, skipping the Sundays… you’ll get to 40.
Our lenten sacrifice is meant to model Christ’s 40 days in the desert.

We’re still deciding. It’ll be our ‘big Lent’, since we’re (God willing) joining the Church at Easter. We’re thinking we’ll both give a couple of things up and take up something. Last year we gave up eating out, which was a considerable sacrifice, and my husband gave up pop.

I’m thinking of taking up daily rosary (which I’m terrible at, usually) and daily psalms, or read all the Gospels. I don’t know what I’m going to give up this year.

when is Ash wednesday?
February 21, two days before my birthday. Can it get any worse - not only Lent, but a Friday in Lent!

Last year I tried to give up waste of time, money and food. I intended to use time well, not buy things only for convenience, and eat all the stuff in the pantry before buying anything else. I didn’t do too well with that because of various stressors in my life at the time. I might try it again this year, or I might just give up white bread and butter, of which I eat an inordinate amount. (Reminds me of your “Do you eat properly” thread, Marilena. No, I don’t.)

Good thread.

I am sure I will give up something food related as I do every year. I’ve done chocolate, sweets, fast food, snacking. Not sure what aspect for this year. Maybe a special fast on Fridays. Any suggestions?

Also I am going to attempt to give up frustration, impatience, and rudeness with regards to my family. This is going to be very difficult for me, but I feel it is important to “reconnect” with those I live with. Not sure how well I will do though. So what happens if you slip up or fail at your Lenten promises?

I’m giving up the internet. I do have to send out a mass email telling everyone I know so that they don’t send me anything important or time sensitive. I will also read more with my daughter and read her a passage from the Bible daily. I will increase the amount of family prayers.

As for food, no baked goods, no candy, no fried food. No snaking between meals.

I don’'t know yet what I am going to do this year, but last year for Lent I gave up smoking and never went back. It will be a year in March after more than 30yrs.😃

 Well done! 👍

Last year, my youngest daughter gave up beets for Lent. She figured that she hates beets, so it wouldn’t be that hard for her to give them up. And she was right - she did not have one beet all during Lent!😃

I guess you can get away with that when you’re only 6.🙂

Chocolate and the Internet for pleasure, which means these forums! 😦 I will still use the Net for business purposes. Blessings to all.

Peace,
Linda

Very cute and smart! :rotfl:

I will give up my couple glasses of wine, that I enjoy with dinner on week-ends. Yes, even Sunday, I will give up my wine. 🙂

Also, I’ll give up political chatting, including in this web-site.

I’ll give up watching and reading the news.
I’ll give up listening to radio talk shows.
Instead, on my 1hr 20 min commute each way to work, I’ll listen to music or audio-books on CD. The benefits I receive from this fast is amazing. I should do it more than just during Lent.

Also, I limit my television to just a couple programs and educational or spiritual programs. I also watch movies during the week-end, but during the week, the TV is shut off for the most part.

And of course, I’ll be making my annual retreat at St. Joseph’s Abbey, in Spencer, MA.

Last year I made it a point to pray the rosary every day during lent. Granted it is something I should do the rest of the year as well, but somehow it is easier when I make a committment to a fixed term. I will be doing it again this year.

I have been thinking about what to give up for Lent. It is suppose to be something I like but am making a list and can’t decide. I have the discussion going on at work and there are many non-Catholics that actually participate in this fast. Got any ideas? Dessert

It can also be doing something… ie… charity work…

I think sugar is a good one because there is sugar in almost everything manufactured, so you are very limited and it is a true sacrafice…

I’m considering several things:

CAF ( )
TV
Sweets
Music
