For me I will follow fasting guidelines everyday except Sunday. Spiritual reading, daily rosary. The usual.

This year I think I will add finishing all my unfinished projects:bigyikes: .

I have a long list of recovering cushions to scanning and making ibooks of all my kids photos to painting a doll house to repairing and painting a wall to…:whacky:

I wanted to know what you plan on giving up for Lent this year?
Smoking… my largest “monkey.” I did this last year as well but as soon as the season was over I bought another carton. This year, in addition to the smoking, I will be saying a special rosary once a week (maybe more) with the intention that after lent ends, I will have the willpower to remain smoke-free. God bless.

Every year I try to give up my pillow. After 5 minutes on the
first day, I literally become frightened. My head feels like it
is pounding, I know I’ll never sleep, and I ask myself: Does
God really want me to do this, after all He gave me the pillow.
I have never heard of anyone giving up their pillow for lent,
but I dearly love my pillow. How far is too far to go in giving
something up for lent? How do others figure out what would please God for lent?
I think this is fantastic! Look how you’ve said you dearly love your pillow, and yet you love the One who had nowhere to lay His head even more. wiping away tears

I think I might try giving up pop. :o I drink it alot just because it’s handy.
When does Lent start? (Sorry, I don’t have a calendar next to me.)

Could I just get away with doing a lentan fast? You know, 2 meals a day only, dinner and a smaller supper. The supper to have no meat or fish. No solid food between the two meals. Abstain on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays?😦
Maybe instead of giving up more food, etc, you could add a positive to your life - another decade of the rosary, or have some masses said for people, eucharistic adoration, etc. I really doubt you should cut back on food - you’ll get blown away by the first strong wind!😃

This year Lent begins February 21st. Pop is a good thing to give up. After smoking that is the next thing which would prove (for me) to be the toughest. God bless.

I’m giving up diet sodas and probably one more thing but I haven’t decided what that will be yet.

I am a smoker too and I know I should quit but right now I just don’t want to. I tried to quit once before when I really didn’t want to and failed, of course.

I think I’m going to give up pop. I think I’m going to try to add a few positives, such as helping out at our local food bank, Gospel Mission, etc. a few times. I’m hoping I can get my whole family involved in some service projects during lent.

Actually, I have been doing that fasting/abstinance program since last 23 November, just to see if I CAN do it. Part of my formation exercises for the CFP.

One should remember that we are allowed fluid milk and juices between meals. This keeps up strength. One should feel hungry, but not weakened.

Rather than give something up, I will either pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy daily, or perhaps do the Office of the Hours. I already belong to the Confraternity for the Rosary, so I already say them very frequently.

I think I have to give up coffee. It’s the only thing that I would really really really really really really miss. I don’t drink much for it to be detrimental to my health, so I don’t get any personal benefit from dropping it, in my mind that makes it a pure penance for me.

Last year I also packed a lunch with a Rosary and a prayer card on how to pray the Rosary, and I would give it to a homelss person somewhere in town every week. It got a little difficult when I gave a man with no teeth a couple of apples in his sack lunch. I felt bad for that. So this year I’m thinking about buying some of those gift cards to a fast food place so they can go get a hot meal and a cup of coffee.

Boy I’m really gonna miss my morning cup of coffee.

You all have some good suggestions. I’m still not sure what I’m giving up or doing for Lent. Giving up soda would be a really good one for me, I’m addicted to the stuff, but I don’t want to give up something I know I’ll fail at. 😉 I might pray the rosary every day or something like that.
Does anyone know if we’re allowed to indulge in whatever we’ve given up on Sunday. I remember as a kid I used to give up the usual, chewing gum or eating candy, and my mom used to tell me that I could have a break on Sunday. Were we allowed that, as Catholics or was that my mom’s idea?
P.S. Ash Wednesday is on Feb. 21st.

What a wonderful idea!

I believe I recall my pastor joking about this last year that as a child he thought the same thing but had to be corrected by his parents. I don’t think we get a day off during Lent.

if you give out gift cards, make sure they are non refundable.

I may not give up anything - I may add something instead. More disciplined prayer and Bilble reading, or daily rosary, or Adoration. If I give up something it most likely be food related, or spending less time on computer.
I’m going to be doing the same thing- I’ve already cleared a lot of clutter- physical and mental- out of my life, and the deacon at my church, when I asked him a few years back what I should give up for Lent (my vices are few and infrequently indulged), he suggested adding something, particuarly prayer.

I’m thinking, forty days of the Akathist to St. Michael the Archangel.

Speaking of clearing the clutter, I was thinking of purchasing this book for Lent:
