What are you giving up or doing for Lent?

I am starting my 3 year probationary period for to become an Active Member (I had my consecration for Associate Member) of the Confraternity of the Holy Guardian Angels. This includes Passio Domini Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday and Friday.

I am also starting the Spiritual Adoption Program through the same group.

The kids are giving up fighting with each other, and will not be taking it out on children outside the family. They are also giving up mealtime gripes. We are giving up vulgar language (not just “swearing”). The TV goes off Ash Wednesday. Those who get off the lenten path will put either a dime (kids) or 50 cents (adults) in THE jar; you know, the one sitting in the middle of the kitchen table. Those little rice bowls and milk cartons don’t cut it. we have a lenten jar, one of those old-fashioned canning jars with a spring-and-wire hasp.

I just tried this dish I saw on food Network, though, and I am wondering if I should give up BBQ spaghetti for Lent. It is very, very tasty, and I had never had it before this evening, when I made it with from scratch BBQ sauce.

This would of lasted only about 5 minutes on both things between my brother and I growing up. 😊

My husband and I are giving up eating out at resturants. Although I see some of you are saving the money you spend to give to the poor (houw awesome!), we are using the money saved to try and get out of debt. College loans are killing us!

Well, as a prodgical Catholic, this is the first Lent since my teens that I’ve given up something. So I didn’t want to just give something up like TV or pop that I would pick up again with no guilt on the Monday after Easter. I wanted to give up something that would make me a better Christian. I was wondering what this would be when a few nights ago my mother pointed out a Bible passage about foul language. Isn’t it wonderful how God just bonks you over the head with the answer sometimes.? 👍

I am giving up swearing. All profanities, and only the use of “Hell” and “damn” in their religious meanings. I’m also cutting out the “OMGs” and any use of God’s name that isn’t purposefully praise or petition or respectful conversation about Him. And the thing is…I’m not picking these things back up again. 🙂

I’m doing it because of a great quote by St. Francis I read here last week: “Preach the Gospel constantly; when necessary use words.” So I’ve been thinking, how can I SHOW my faith? And how can I be a positive influence to others by my faith?

I’m 25 years old, and a 25 year old that doesn’t swear is a rare thing and sure to stick out after awhile. But I want it to stick out because I’m following God’s rules, not society’s distortions of what I should be. It says right in the Bible that God wants me to keep a clean mouth beyound what I’ve done since my teenage years of “anything not blasphmey goes”. I can do better then that, with God strenghtening me. 🙂

Also, swearing is a thorn in my side for different reasons. I have Tourette’s Syndrome. When I say that, most of you will think of people who scream profanities, but in fact only about 30% of us suffer from coprohailia. I’ve had so many people ask me if I scream swear words over the years and I have to tell them I swear by choice. But do they believe that? I hate that sterotype SO much and I’ve come to conclusion it’s very hypocritical for me to turn around and feed the sterotype by making sailors blush with my language on purpose!

Anyone else giving up something they hope to drop for good, and not just for Lent? 🙂
And here I thought I was having an original idea! I tend to use vulgar language when I am around male friends (Never in front of the ladies) and encourage them as well when they start in. So I asked them this week to help me keep my vow of pennance to our Lord by keeping the conversations clean at least through Lent, because I’m not sure I can do it alone. My request has been met with surprise, but at the same time respect. Wish me well!

I am giving up wearing makeup. It will hopefully make me less vain and also save me a lot of money (I love the department store brands). Also I am hoping to pray the Liturgy of the Hours each day.

I thought about doing the same thing, but then it says in the Bible that you should wash your face and look normal when you are fasting so it would be a secret. I changed my mind. Maybe you could just fast your designer makeup or something. I’m going keep all of my fasts to myself. There is more reward in heaven that way.🙂

God Bless

As in previous years, I am giving up alcohol ( I go through an 18-pack per week )…partly as a Lenten observance, and partly to reassure myself that I don’t have a problem…it’s worked just fine for the last several years.

I also purchased a breviary set on eBay a couple of weeks ago, and my pastor has promised to “show me the ropes” when they arrive…hopefully before Wednesday, so I can add the Liturgy of the Hours to the “no beer” thing.

had some very scary blood sugar episodes so will be spending lent with increased testing, recording everything eaten and all activity, and fine-tuning diet and exercise program. lent for me means RCIA which will take up all my spare time after CCD, youth retreats for all levels, Disciples in Mission and various parish lenten programs.

I’m giving up work in particular, and responsibility generally.

😃

Just kidding. This is my first Lent (I was an eleventh-hour Easter convert), so I’ll be trying to go whole hog (at least what’s whole hog for me).

I don’t smoke much, but no smoking; no drinking; no soda, nothing but water; and I’m considering Daily Mass for all of Lent.

I would no more ask this question to a person outside of cyberspace than I would ask his salary information, but I see no harm in doing so here due to our anonymity. I think this thread could be of assistance to those seeking ideas…such as myself.

Lent is almost here.

Related question: will you continue your chosen Lenten practice even during the Sundays of Lent and the Triduum?

Well, I gave up smoking a few years ago, so that’s out. I’m not a big snack-food eater, so I don’t have that.

I’m thinking what I might do is take a portion of the money I had set aside for getting a new XBox 360 and donate it to local charity. If I have to wait until well after Easter to get it, so be it. Video games are about my only “vice” these days. 🙂

I plan to get to bed earlier so I don’t have the excuse of needing more sleep and I can do those things I should do in the mornings. This means no CAF late at night!

I plan to commit to nothing other than the required fasting and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and abstinence from meat on all Fridays of Lent.

And no, Lenten Sundays will not be “penance” days for me either.

I hope to say the Angelus 3 times a day. I used to say the 6pm Angelus but have got out of the habit. I hope that by saying it during lent, the habit will stick. This is how I started saying a daily Rosary several years back.
No, I won’t say it from Holy Thrusday to Easter Sunday and I will replace it with the Regina Coeli during Eastertide.

Abstinence: No meat, dairy, oils, alcohol, no more than 5 hours sleep a night

Fasting: standard one meal and two collations
Prayers: one Divine Mercy Chaplet, one Rosary, 1/2 hour Bible reading and the three Angelus.
I’m going to try for a daily Mass, aswell as weekly confession and adoration. I should probably stop spending so much time on the internet aswell 😛 .

I don’t think I will continue the dietary practice on Sundays (but I will continue the prayers) but why wouldn’t I continue during the Triduum?

God Bless

Peter

Go-to Confession.
No Alcohol.
Pray the Rosary every day.
Be nicer to people, IE; take a deep breath before I reach breaking point.

Re-read the Bible, it’s been a while.

Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy every day.

I have decided to give up time. I plan to go to at least two weekday masses a week. Lent is a time for spiritual exercises. We need to buid up our our spiritual muscle as well as our physical muscle. The grace from frequent communion should get me well on my way

We are giving up meat.
Since DH is not Catholic, he can consume all the meat he wants- outside the house. Inside the house, we are vegetarian.
