I do it now as a symbolic gesture (also because until Easter I’m fasting that day anyway for another prayer group activity).
It’s not a great penance for me because I often have meatless days just because I don’t get around to eating any meat.

I read a children’s story about that when I was little. A farmer refused to say it and he had everything go wrong in his day until he broke down and said it.

Crucifix & Holy Water font in every room. Palms & Rosaries on Crucifix. Painting of The Last Supper in the Dining Room. Kitchen Madonna statue in kitchen. Shrine of various statues in house Prayer Corner. Daily recitation of the Rosary as a family. Daily praying of the Divine Office. Always a Religious Calendar. Rosary/Miraculous Medal & Palm in car.

I do a lot of that simply out of consideration for my budget. I like eggs and several portions of the legume family quite well, and they’re just cheaper than meat (especially as I dislike poultry).

fish and no meat on friday.

An icon and a Virgin.

A Bible.

Mass on sundays and catholic celebrations

Sometimes speaks on religious beliefs.

A family catholic magazine.

And that’s all. We were a practicing family but no more.

In the family that i bluid : no traditions except mass and If I cook myself, no meat.

I still refrain from eating meat all the Fridays of the year.
I recently took it up again as a symbolic gesture. I forget sometimes unfortunately, but hopefully, practice makes perfect.

I remember a story in one of my children’s books - it was a Catholic school reader that was issued prior to Vatican II - where a boy came home from school hungry and he was going to eat some turkey but his dog started to bark and his cat started to make a fuss at him and he couldn’t understand why the pets were so excited until he saw that it was Friday on the calendar and the dog and cat had stopped him from making a bad mistake. So he praised them for helping him. I thought it was a cute story. As an adult I’m thinking the pets just wanted some of the turkey. I hope he gave them some, as animals don’t have to abstain 🙂
