What are your cultural or family Catholic traditions?

I also had a holy water font hanging on the door of my room as a child. My mother eventually removed it because it was made of chalkware and it kept falling down and breaking and needing to be reglued back together.

That’s a good point. As I recall I’m near a very nice seminary, I just haven’t had much call to go up that way. But they’ve got to have some stuff.

Sadly, looking for local Catholic shops just turns up the local Christian Science reading room.

i have a home-made Marian shrine in my house

a statue of Mary; some holy water from Knock, a candle or two…\don’t freaK OUT PROTESTANTS; I DON’T worship MARIAN STATUES

Also, ordering online is not the denizen some make it out to be… Maybe try Amazon sometime

It’s ok, but unless you’re ordering a lot at once the shipping costs tend to run high very quickly. I prefer to not order online unless I have some idea of the quality of the item I’m buying, especially as you have to pay return shipping.

I’ll look at EWTN though.

theres a sort tab that allows you to sort items by free shipping by Amazon

There is, but it’s not common that I’ve found on small items.

You might keep in mind that the products EWTN sells may seem pricey. But that is because it helps fund their mission, too.

I am. Unfortunately, I’m also keeping in mind that my budget really doesn’t do pricey.

If you want bargains and you don’t mind used, try eBay. You can often find old devotional items such as crucifixes and unusual medals for very cheap. Look for items with free or low shipping.

GiftsCatholic is another place that sells a lot of things cheap - look for sale deals and also look for any coupons like Retailmenot on the web before you check out.

Yeah, when I live near a St. Vincent store you could get all kinds of second-hand Catholic goodies there, it was very nice. I don’t mind used at all.

Zero. No real cultural or religious tradition. Christmas and, when we were younger, maybe Easter. I thought that church buildings were for funerals.

Seasonal…

A few days before Christmas we would all pile into the car (7 of us) and go around looking at Christmas lights. We would all sing Christmas carols (mostly religious, some in Latin) while riding around.

Christmas presents would be opened AFTER midnight Mass, one of two times during the year, the other Easter, that us kids stayed up. With afternoon nap before hand, to be sure.

Non seasonal. All 3 (there was no Luminous mysteries at the time) sets of Rosary at 8:30 every night. Everyone lead a decade. With 7 people, that meant, as 6th in the pecking order, I got to know the first sorrowful mystery and 3rd glorious mystery real well.

We all had religious pictures in our room. Mine was a luminous figure of Christ in the Garden.

Long car trips included rosary, or singing, or both.

I’ve always enjoyed those. Many areas I’ve been in have had large Hispanic populations, and they’re always more than happy to welcome any Catholic who wishes to participate, even if I only know like 5 words of Spanish. I find it a good reminder sometimes that ours is a worldwide faith.

My grandmother, from India, would burn incense around religious paintings all over the house and then leave it at our family altar. Don’t know how catholic that is though.

saint lucy is my favorite saint

she has been so kind to me;

Lucy is a very good gateway to Mother Church

just say Lucy’s name in prayer

She will not fail you

During Lent, my grandmother veiled all statues and extra mirrors in the house during the last week.We attended stations of the cross every Friday.

Her home was enthroned to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I now have the image that was hers on my wall.

We celebrated various saint feasts, with food and special meals.

Prayers at night were over 1 hour in her bedroom. If I didn’t join, I had to be quiet and not talk to her during this time.

Rosary after school.

She gave me flowers from the garden for Mary statue at school.

We said grace before meals and there were Holy water fonts on each bedroom doorway.

She had a side table with all devotional items in the drawer, prayer cards, novena cards, candles and small saint pictures, chapel veils and other prayer aids. On top were saint statues.

For those looking for a rock-solid Catholic bookstore that sells all sorts of Catholic items, you can’t get much better than Leaflet Missal. It is right down the street from me, so I can vouch for it; in fact, I know the founders.
